Rahul Gandhi to appear before MP/MLA court in Lucknow today

: Congress MP from Rae Bareli and leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will appear before the MP/MLA court in Lucknow on Tuesday in a case related to disparaging remarks allegedly made by him about a face-off between Indian and Chinese soldiers. The comments were allegedly made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra on December 16, 2022. Congress MP from Rae Bareli and leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi (File photo) Advocate Vivek Tewari had filed the complaint against Rahul Gandhi on behalf of Uday Shankar Srivastava, a former director of the Border Roads Organisation with a rank equivalent to an Army colonel, in January 2023. Rahul Gandhi's alleged statement was derogatory towards the Army and hurt the sentiments of the armed forces, according to the complainant. Additional chief judicial magistrate Alok Verma, Lucknow, had earlier directed Rahul Gandhi to appear before the court on March 24, 2025, in the defamation case filed against him. Gandhi had challenged the additional CJM's order, passed on February 11, 2025, in the high court but did not get relief. Dismissing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's petition, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court held that the right to freedom of speech and expression does not extend to making defamatory statements against the Indian Army. Gandhi had challenged the summons by a local court in connection with a case related to his alleged remarks on the Indian Army. A single-judge bench of Justice Subhash Vidyarthi on June 2, 2025, passed the order, rejecting Rahul Gandhi's petition challenging the additional CJM's order. 'No doubt, Article 19(1) of the Constitution of India guarantees freedom of speech and expression, this freedom is subject to the reasonable restrictions and it does not include the freedom to make statements which are defamatory to any person or defamatory to the Indian Army,' the high court observed. The high court dismissal of his petition paved the way for Rahul Gandhi to face trial in the lower court.

Ludhiana: MP Warring protests arrest of party leader

The arrest of Congress Zila Parishad member Kuldeep Singh Baddowal by Mullapur police late Sunday night triggered a major political showdown, with senior Congress leaders, including Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) President and Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, reaching the Dakha police station and staged a protest against the arrest. Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring reached the Dakha police station and staged a protest against the arrest. (HT Photo) Baddowal was arrested for allegedly threatening social worker Amandeep Amni. The complainant had alleged that Baddowal, a resident of Baddowal village, had been issuing life threats repeatedly, including via social media, and was seen flashing a weapon in a video posted online. The police said the video formed the basis of immediate action and led to his arrest. He was produced in court and has been sent to one-day police remand. However, Congress leaders have questioned the timing and motive behind the arrest. According to them, the viral video is at least four to five years old and was originally posted on TikTok. 'This is nothing but political vendetta,' said congress leader Captain Sandeep Sandhu, who reached the police station soon after learning of Baddowal's arrest. 'If the complaint is not cancelled, we will gherao the police station,' he added. Tensions escalated in the evening when MP Raja Warring arrived at the Dakha police station at around 8:30 PM and staged a sit-in along with scores of party workers. Warring accused the police of acting under pressure from the AAP-led Punjab government and alleged that the Congress leader was manhandled in custody. He raised slogans inside the police station and targeted the DSP, calling the entire episode a deliberate attempt to intimidate political opponents. Warring further claimed that the same police had failed to act in cases involving petrol bomb and bullet attacks in Baddowal, but were quick to arrest a Congress leader over a year-old video. 'This is selective targeting. If justice is not served, Congress will take to the streets,' warned Warring. Congress supporters camped outside the police station throughout the evening. The sit-in was eventually lifted after senior police officials, including DSP Indrajit Singh Boparai and SP Ramninder Deol, met the protesting leaders and assured them of a fair investigation. 'The officers have assured us that any further action will be taken only after an impartial probe, and that even the concerned officer will be held accountable if found guilty,' Warring told reporters after the protest was called off.

Bihar Congress condemns insult of Tushar Gandhi, great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi

Bihar Congress on Monday (July 14, 2025) strongly condemned the incident of alleged insult of Tushar Gandhi, the great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi by several people including the Mukhiya of Turkauliya village in East Champaran district. Mr. Gandhi, who launched the 'Badlo Bihar Nai Sarkar' (Change Bihar, New Government) from the Bhitiharwa Gandhi Ashram in West Champaran on Saturday (July 12, 2025), had reached Turkaulia in East Champaran as part of his journey on July 13. Mukhiya (village head) Vinay Kumar Sah and his supporters allegedly insulted Mr. Gandhi and asked to leave the event. While speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Gandhi said that he had to face personal attack as well. In the village he reached at the historic Neem tree, a place from where Mahatma Gandhi had once listened to the woes of farmers forced to cultivate indigo. Mr. Gandhi garlanded the spot and recalled the horrors of the past when British landlords used to tie farmers to the tree and beat them. Mahatma had visited this place twice. After garlanding the place, Mr. Gandhi was invited by the Mukhiya to speak in office hall of Gram Panchayat where the argument started when one of his associates raised questions on the Nitish Kumar government and spoke in favour of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress. Mr. Gandhi was accompanied by farmer leader Dr. Sunilam, socialist thinker Vijay Pratap Singh, Rashtriya Seva Dal activist Allauddin Sheikh, activist Feroze Mithiborwala, Jharkhand's Praveer Peter, Gujarat's Mujahid Nafees and many other national and state leaders. According to a villager, as soon as Mr. Gandhi and his associates started speaking on the frenzy spread in the country, social divisions and political failures of Bihar, the Mukhiya asked him to vacate the stage in a humiliating manner. Asked about the incident, Mr. Gandhi said, 'We had a plan to make awareness among the people in favour of Mahagathbandhan and this Mukhiya insisted me to speak over there. When our colleague Vijay Pratap Singh finished his speech, the Mukhiya raised an objection asking why we are doing this. He started shouting at us and then I requested not to shout.' He further said, 'I told him to calm down and speak politely but he kept on shouting. Then he said that I do not look like the descendants of Mahatma Gandhi and continue shouting. I asked him not to make any personal comments and if there are some issues, it could be resolved through intellectual talks. However, all my attempts turned futile and he warned us that I cannot do any campaign in his office. Then I have no other option to leave the place.' He also said that villagers also opposed the behaviour of Mukhiya and he addressed the people outside the Panchayat office. 'When the Mukhiya could not intellectually match, he showed his anger and absurd behaviour which was not acceptable,' Mr. Gandhi asserted. Bihar Congress State in-charge Krishna Allavaru, state president Rajesh Kumar, leader of the Congress legislative party Dr. Shakeel Ahmed Khan, and leader of the party in the Congress Legislative Council Dr. Madan Mohan Jha jointly attacked the state government. 'The incident is the murder murder of Gandhi's ideas. It is not just an insult to a person, but to an idea that was based on truth, non-violence and respect for dissent,' Mr. Allavaru said. Mr. Khan added that Nitish and Narendra Modi ji have thrown Gandhi's ideas and principles into the dustbin and have just borrowed his glasses for publicity.
