Titans waive Treylon Burks after franchise-haunting trade
More than three years after the fact, the A.J. Brown trade keeps getting worse for the Titans. The Titans announced Monday that wide receiver Treylon Burks, whom the team selected No. 18 overall after acquiring the pick as part of the Brown trade, has been waived. Burks was waived with injury designation after hurting his collarbone during practice on Saturday, and if he clears waivers, he'll wind up back on Tennessee's injured reserve. Advertisement 3 Treylon Burks at Titans training camp on July 26. AP The Titans drafted Burks out of Arkansas with the hope that the 6-foot-2, 225-pound wideout could eventually replace Brown, who already had one Pro-Bowl appearance and two seasons with more than 1,000 receiving yards under his belt. Instead, Burks never proved himself to be an impactful NFL player. Advertisement He hauled in 444 yards for one touchdown his rookie year, but notched just 221 yards in 2023 and missed most of the 2024 season with an ACL injury. The Titans signed former University of Tennessee wide receiver Ramel Keyton to fill Burks' roster spot. Tennessee dealt Brown to the Eagles on the night of the 2022 draft in exchange for the No. 18 pick (Burks) and the 101st overall selection, which they traded. 3 Tennessee Titans wide receiver Treylon Burks (16) makes a catch during minicamp at Nissan Stadium. Steve Roberts-Imagn Images Advertisement Brown has been terrific since arriving in Philadelphia, notching back-to-back Pro-Bowl nods in 2022 and 2023 and winning the Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2025. In his three seasons in Philly, he has accumulated 4,031 receiving yards and hauled in 25 touchdowns. Frustrated Titans fans took to social media at the news of Burks' getting waived, with many teeing off on then-general manager Jon Robinson. 3 A.J. Former Titan Taylor Lewan hints at 'side story' behind why Kentucky star Will Levis delayed surgery
Cam Ward was selected as the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans, but from the beginning, he has been one of the least talked-about No. 1 picks in recent memory. Ward carried plenty of hype coming out of college, but that buzz has largely faded. "He's the least talked about, under-the-radar No. 1 pick I think in the history of football... Let's go back to last year's draft. He would've been in the mix... I think he would've been my 3rd QB,' NFL analyst Chris Simms said. Following a season-ending injury to quarterback Will Levis, the starting job now appears to be Ward's as training camp gets underway. 'With Will Levis out for the year, No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward is now poised to become the Titans' starting quarterback, despite the fact that the team has not named him its starter,' ESPN's Adam Schefter wrote. However, with the injury news coming so late, former Titan Taylor Lewan believes there may be more to the story regarding Levis' delayed announcement. 'I'm sure there's a side to the story that explains why Will waited until late July to get this surgery. Unfortunately, I'm too dumb to figure out what that is,' Lewan posted. Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Lewan implies there could be a deeper reason why Levis waited until training camp to speak up. Clay Travis shared similar skepticism about the timing of Levis' surgery. 'I'd be curious to know when Will Levis knew he needed surgery. Because waiting until the start of training camp to have the surgery instead of during the past 7 months of offseason feels spiteful,' Travis wrote. The real reason remains unclear — maybe Levis could no longer manage the pain. Or perhaps, as training camp approached, he realized he wasn't going to be the guy and struggled to accept it. Regardless of the motive, one thing is certain: the Titans are now in the market for a backup quarterback.
