Hollie Strano, former WKYC TV meteorologist, gets new gig in Stark County

Hollie Strano, the former WKYC Channel 3 TV meteorologist, has landed a new gig in Stark County. Strano, who was fired last year after 22 years with the station, will now bring Mix 94.1 radio listeners the weather each morning. "Hollie Strano is an Emmy-winning mental health advocate, seasoned television professional, and nationally recognized public figure with over two decades of on-air experience," according to a post on the Canton station's website. "A trusted meteorologist and the creator of Abruptly Authentic — streaming on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts — she blends science, storytelling, and soul to deliver impactful forecasts and fearless conversations across the country." Related reporting: 'I love me, finally': Hollie Strano shares her recovery story, offers hope to others "Let's do this Stark County!" Strano said on Facebook. "So much love for you, Canton! Thank you for having me!" Strano will forecast Monday-Sunday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. A message was left Aug. 18 with Mix 94.1 requesting comment on Strano's hiring. Why did Hollie Strano lose her position at WKYC? The station announced Strano's firing in September 2024, around nine months after she was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence in November 2023. She later pleaded guilty to the charge. "I am sad to share that after 22 plus years of dedicated work, WKYC and Tegna decided to terminate my employment after I shared my recovery journey publicly," she posted following her termination. "I believe the actions of WKYC and Tegna demonstrate the stigma surrounding addiction that so many in our community experience every day." Related reporting: WKYC denies allegations made by former meteorologist Hollie Strano in civil case Shortly after she was fired, Strano filed a lawsuit against her former company, claiming she was terminated for sharing her alcoholism recovery journey on social media as well as promoting a product. Strano also forecasts for southern radio stations Last month, Strano also announced that she is doing forecast work for radio stations in the Georgia and Alabama areas. "What an honor it is to be bringing you the forecast each day, from my hometown in Cleveland to your radios down South!" she said in a Facebook post. "Grateful for the opportunity, and excited for what's ahead." She also hosts the "Abruptly Authentic with Hollie Strano" podcast on Youtube. The Akron Beacon Journal contributed to this report. Erin slightly weaker, tropical storm watches in effect in North Carolina

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) – The 5 AM advisory on Tuesday shows that Erin continues to weaken, but it is still a major hurricane. Life-threatening surf and rip currents across the East Coast of the United States this week, as Erin passes off the coast. The latest 5 a.m. advisory on Erin shows the center is located 750 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Winds are currently at 115 mph. Erin is moving northwest at 7 mph. The barometric pressure is at 955 mb. A tropical storm watch is in effect for central North Carolina. The Outer Banks of North Carolina are likely to see tropical storm-force winds (greater than 35 mph) and outer rainbands. Mandatory evacuations were issued in Dare County. On Monday, there were more than 50 rip current rescues along North Carolina area beaches. High pressure developing over the East Coast, along with a cold front on Thursday, will keep Erin off our coast. The latest GFS (black) and European (white) models are in good agreement with Erin's offshore position, which, for overnight Wednesday, is estimated to be 300-350 miles to our east. Locally, impacts will be in the form of dangerous rip currents through the end of the week for the Grand Strand. A high surf and small craft advisory is in effect for today and tomorrow. The Grand Strand could see 5- to 7-foot waves in the surf zone Tuesday night through Thursday, along with 16-30-foot waves 20-200 miles offshore. Because of this, a small craft advisory has been issued until Thursday. Minor coastal flooding and beach erosion will be possible during high tide cycles. Especially on Thursday night, when the high tide at Springmaid Pier will be near 7 ft, which would lead to flooding in Cherry Grove and Garden City.
