EC issues notice to Vaishali MP, her JD(U) MLC husband for possessing two voter ID cards

The Hindu3 days ago
The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday (August 14, 2025) issued notice to Vaishali MP Veena Devi of the LJP(RV) and her husband Dinesh Prasad Singh, a JD(U) MLC, and sought their reply regarding their possession of dual EPIC numbers by August 16.
The Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of Muzaffarpur Assembly constituency in Bihar has issued notice to them following the claim made by Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav that both leaders have two EPIC numbers.
In a post on X, the Rashtriya Janata Dal leader said Mr. Singh has two EPIC numbers in Muzaffarpur district, and he is a voter of two Assembly constituencies — Sahebganj and Muzaffarpur — like his wife.
'How did he get two different EPIC cards in two different Lok Sabha constituencies and two different Assembly constituencies in the new draft rolls published by the Election Commission? Will the Election Commission accept its irregularities and mistakes in SIR? Is this not electoral fraud by EC to ensure NDA's victory?' Mr. Yadav asked.
Late on Wednesday night (August 13, 2025), the former Deputy Chief Minister issued a press release stating that the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) MP possesses two EPIC voter ID numbers. Mr. Yadav claimed that she is a voter of two Assembly constituencies in Muzaffarpur district — Sahebganj and Muzaffarpur Assembly constituencies.
He also stated that the two EPIC numbers are showing two different ages in both Assembly seats. He asserted that Ms. Devi had filled two enumeration forms in the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Mr. Yadav pointed out that she must have given her signature at two places and asked the EC how she got two EPIC numbers of two different Assembly constituencies. He asked the poll body whether it would send her a notice.
Mr. Yadav held a press conference at his official residence on Wednesday and claimed that Muzaffarpur Mayor Nirmala Devi and her two relatives have two EPIC numbers each. On August 10, he had claimed Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha also has two voter ID cards of two different Assembly constituencies. Later, the EC issued notice to all the leaders who the RJD leader had alleged possessed these cards.
Meanwhile, Mr. Yadav on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court's interim order in the SIR exercise with its directions to the EC to publish the list of approximately 65 lakh names excluded from the draft rolls.
The Leader of the Opposition said he has been raising since day one the issue of irregularities in the SIR. He asserted that with the interim order of the Supreme Court, the EC will now be 'exposed' when the poll body will publish the list of 65 lakh people. He also added that the Opposition will not let allow genuine voters to be excluded from the voters list.
'First on 27th June, I had raised the voice against the process of SIR and its timing. However, I was ridiculed by the ruling parties. News of foreign nationals was planted from sources, and a personal attack was made on me. We met EC officials but their action was never cooperative,' Mr. Yadav said.
'I want to thank all the leaders of opposition be it Sonia Gandhi ji, Rahul Gandhi ji, Mamata Banerjee ji, M.K. Stalin ji and other leaders for extending their support. We will have a close eye on the activities of the EC and will keep fighting for it. Since the beginning, the Election Commissioner has not done a single press conference. The NDA is going to face a humiliating defeat in the upcoming Assembly election and now the EC will now be exposed with the SC orders,' he added.

‘Investigate, don't intimidate': Congress on Election Commission press conference

Shortly after the Election Commission held a press conference defending the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, the Congress on Sunday asked the poll panel to 'investigate' the allegations raised by Opposition parties and not to 'intimidate' them. Jairam Ramesh, the party general secretary in charge of communications, also claimed that the Election Commission stood ' thoroughly exposed ' for its 'incompetence and blatant partisanship'. He further described as 'laughable' the statement by the Election Commission that it makes no distinction between the ruling party and the Opposition. Earlier in the day, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar claimed that a deliberate attempt was being made to spread confusion by ignoring the ground reality of the voter roll revision. 'For EC neither anyone is Opposition nor ruling party,' Kumar said. 'There is no discrimination between parties, all are the same.' He also said that no political party had lodged objections so far after the draft roll was published on August 1. Kumar added that the main purpose of the revision exercise was to 'purify' the voter list, adding that it was carried out after receiving several complaints from political parties. However, The Hindu had quoted workers of political parties as saying on August 9 that they had filed several complaints. Party workers had told the newspaper that when they flag the deletion of names of eligible voters through complaints, the electoral registration officers tell them to ask the voters to submit Form 6, which is for the registration of new voters. In a social media post on Sunday, Ramesh asked if the poll panel would fully implement the Supreme Court's Thursday order directing that the list prepared after the revision of voter rolls should be displayed on the websites of the state's district electoral officers and the chief electoral officer. 'It is constitutionally bound to do so,' Ramesh said. 'The nation is waiting and watching.' The Congress leader also alleged that the poll panel had failed to address the concerns raised by Rahul Gandhi and pointed out that the claims made by the leader of the Opposition were based on the Election Commission's data. Today, the Election Commission of India held a press conference. This was the first time this 'new' ECI was speaking directly and not planting through sources. Yesterday, the ECI had released a 'Press Note', the purpose of which was to place the onus of voter list correction on… — Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) August 17, 2025 During the press conference, Kumar cited a 2019 ruling of the Supreme Court to say that machine-readable voter lists cannot be released as they could violate the privacy of voters. The Election Commission's press conference coincided with the launch of the Congress' 16-day Voter Adhikar Yatra, or a voter rights march, in poll-bound Bihar against alleged fraud during the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. On claims made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi that his party had found discrepancies in more than one lakh names in the Mahadevapura Assembly segment of the Bangalore Central Lok Sabha constituency, Kumar said that an affidavit would have to be submitted or an apology made to the country. 'There is no third option,' he said. 'If the affidavit is not received within seven days, it means that all these allegations are baseless.' EC facilitating 'vote theft': Rahul Gandhi Rahul Gandhi on Sunday alleged that the poll panel was colluding with the Bharatiya Janata Party to carry out 'vote theft' under the guise of revising electoral rolls in Bihar. He said he was not afraid of Election Commission officials and vowed not to allow the alleged theft of votes. Speaking in Aurangabad at the end of the first day of his voter rights march, Gandhi said that while he was asked to submit an affidavit on his claims about alleged electoral fraud, no such demand had been made of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Anurag Thakur, who made similar allegations in a separate press conference. — Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) August 17, 2025 Bihar voter roll revision The revision of the electoral rolls in Bihar was announced by the Election Commission on June 24. As part of the exercise, persons whose names were not on the 2003 voter list needed to submit proof of eligibility to vote. The draft voter roll was published on August 1 ahead of the Bihar Assembly polls expected to take place in October or November. The list will be revised by September after the Election Commission assesses objections and claims about the exclusion and inclusion of voters in the draft roll. On Thursday, the Election Commission was directed by the Supreme Court to publish a district-wise list of the 65 lakh Bihar voters whose names were removed from the draft along with the reason for each deletion such as death, migration or double registration. Sharing the list and the reasons for deletions will improve 'voter confidence' in the institution, the court said. The bench said that the documents should be searchable based on the Elector Photo Identity Card numbers. Scroll had reported on August 9 that the Election Commission had replaced the digital draft voter lists in Bihar with scanned images of the voter lists on its official websites. The digital draft lists are machine-readable and easier to analyse for errors and patterns on a large scale. The scanned versions make this process harder. On Saturday, the poll panel said that political parties or individuals who had concerns about electoral rolls prepared in the past should have raised them during the claims and objections period. It did not name any political party or person in the statement. On August 7, Gandhi said that his party had spent six months examining the electoral rolls in Mahadevapura Assembly segment of the Bangalore Central Lok Sabha constituency and found discrepancies in more than one lakh names. He alleged that this was evidence of the poll panel having colluded with the Bharatiya Janata Party. The Election Commission had on Wednesday dismissed Gandhi's allegations as ' false and misleading '.

3,000 cops to be deployed for TVK's second conference near Koodakovil

MADURAI: With the 2026 Assembly election nearing, arrangements for the much-anticipated second state conference of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Thursday are in the final stages in Madurai district. The police said around 3,000 police personnel would be deployed under the supervision of the IGP of the South Zone, Prem Anand Sinha, for security arrangements on the day. Separate traffic diversion routes have been created for people coming from the northern, central, western and southern parts of the state. In order to avoid any accidental deaths on the roads after the conference, police will be more cautious to regulate traffic, a police officer said. A party district functionary further said that the conference is scheduled to be held between 3.30 pm and 7.30 pm and will be held in a 500-acre area, which includes parking space, near Koodakovil. At least 1.25 lakh party functionaries and thousands of others are expected to take part. Starting from medical assistance and water facilities, other basic amenities have been arranged. 'This is likely to be the final conference before next year's Assembly election, so, like others, I am also eager for the address of party chief Vijay,' the functionary said. Talking to TNIE on Sunday, the party's propaganda and policy general secretary, former IRS officer Arunraj said that while the first state conference answered questions about the measures the actor-turned-politician Vijay wanted to do for the state and his political ideology, the second state conference, in contrast, will address why the party needs to come to power in 2026, he said, noting that the party is growing. Although the initial date for the second conference was planned for August 25, the police requested for a change, citing Vinayagar Chaturthi, and the event was later rescheduled to August 21.
