Exposure is key, says Malaysian junior hockey coach Nor Saiful Zaini ahead of MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup
'We don't have any high hopes. Ours is an inexperienced and young bunch. It will be great if we make it to the knock-out stages of MCC-Murugappa tournament, and I will be delighted if we maintain the 12th place finish that we did in the previous edition of the World Cup in 2023,' Saiful told Sportstar here.
According to Saiful, the National team is running out of time. Since taking over in May this year, the 59-year-old is keen to give maximum exposure to the boys and make it the best possible team.

'Before coming here, we had three months of strong preparation, playing against a top division club in Liaoning (China), coached by South Korea's top coach Kim Sang-ryul, at Dalian City. After Murugappa, we are going to Perth and compete in the Sultan of Johor Cup (from Oct. 10 to 18 at Johor Baru). And then may be train again in China,' said the three-time Olympian.
Playing against senior players in the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup will not be easy, said Saiful, but expressed confidence that his boys will put up a fight.
Placed in Pool-E with the Netherlands, England and Austria in the FIH junior men's World Cup, Malaysia will find it tough and Saiful admitted it as much. 'England and Dutch are very strong teams. And some of the number two teams from other groups, are quite strong. We still try to finish 12th. We don't want to finish behind 16. It is going to be tough all the way, but I want my players to play modern hockey; that's my philosophy,' he said.
Having assisted other coaches of the Malaysian National junior team from 2016-20, Saiful knows what ails the country's hockey. 'We need time to build the team and require more exposure tours. In my six months (before the FIH junior men's World Cup), I can't do wonders. I want my boys to play their best,' he said.

Adil Rami blasts Lamine Yamal over Ronaldo handshake, parties, and bling
Lamine Yamal has swiftly become a global football sensation, earning admiration for his electrifying displays for both Barcelona and the Spanish national team. The teenage prodigy was instrumental in Spain's Euro 2024 triumph and followed it up with an exceptional season at club level, where he helped Barcelona secure a domestic treble. In the 2024-25 campaign, the 18-year-old featured in 55 official matches for the Blaugrana, scoring 18 goals and delivering 25 assists across all competitions. With such impressive numbers and silverware to his name, Yamal is already being considered a strong contender for this year's Ballon d'Or. Despite widespread praise, Yamal hasn't escaped criticism. Former French international and 2018 World Cup winner Adil Rami launched into a furious tirade aimed at the young forward. In comments made during an appearance on Instant Foot, Rami not only criticized Yamal's personality but also went so far as to insult his mother, a move that drew widespread condemnation. Frustration Triggered by Ronaldo Interaction Rami pointed to a specific incident that triggered his disdain for Yamal, his interaction with Cristiano Ronaldo. The teenager was seen shaking hands with the Portuguese star during the Nations League final between Spain and Portugal, a moment that didn't sit well with Rami. "What really set me off was how he greeted Ronaldo. Then he posted videos talking about him, those rubbed me the wrong way," Rami said. Criticism of Lifestyle and Image Rami's criticism went beyond football. He attacked Yamal's fashion choices, nightlife, and rumored relationships, implying that the young player is adopting a flashy, overly Americanized lifestyle that doesn't align with football tradition. "He walks around with his shorts down, wearing massive jewelry, acting like a superstar already. That style has a history, do you even know what it represents?" Rami questioned. "Now he's partying, already making headlines. He's taken the No. 10 jersey, wearing big diamonds like he's in Hollywood. It's frustrating." Public Reaction and Ongoing Debate

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma's 2027 World Cup Dream Difficult, Ex-India Star Gives MS Dhoni's Example
India stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bowed out of T20I cricket after guiding the team to the T20 World Cup title in 2024. That trophy ended India's 11-year-old ICC title drought. Later, the duo also called time on their respective Test careers in May this year, leaving the fans heartbroken. However, both the players are still active in the ODIs and aim to play the ODI World Cup in 2027 and help India clinch the trophy. However, former India spinner Harbhajan Singh feels that it will be quite difficult for them to play in the prestigious ICC tournament. Harbhajan stated that after retiring from two formats, it becomes difficult to maintain a good performance, especially for a tournament like World Cup. "It's too far, actually. It's been a very long time, and they are not playing any other formats. It becomes very difficult for anyone, no matter how much commitment you have or how big a great you are," Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel. "If you do not play the game continuously, somewhere the game moves ahead and you are left behind," he added. He went on to give an example of former India skipper MS Dhoni, who did not feature in international cricket after India's exit from the 2019 World Cup. Harbhajan called out Dhoni for his batting struggles in the IPL. "It will be hard. We have seen MS Dhoni playing in the IPL. Look at his performance in the last three years," he said. You see the difference between this Dhoni and the Dhoni from six years ago when he was playing for India consistently," Harbhajan added. Earlier, former BCCI selector Jatin Paranjpe revealed a conversation with Rohit Sharma, where the latter had expressed his desire of playing Test cricket for India. "I remember he was not playing Test cricket for India. And we had this conversation, and he said, 'I started playing cricket with a red ball, Jatin. How can you say that I am not interested in Test cricket?' I got the message, and I was hoping that that was what he would say," Paranjpe said on 'A Century of Stories' podcast with Cyrus Broacha.

Have to start from ball one: Harmanpreet stresses on reset for home WC
A double series win in England may have boosted the confidence of the Indian women's team ahead of a home World Cup but skipper Harmanpreet Kaur said her side will need to "start from ball one" when they return home to prepare for the global showpiece. Harmanpreet led from the front with her seventh women's ODI century as India defeated England by 13 runs in a high-scoring decider here on Tuesday to clinch the three-match series 2-1, following their 3-2 triumph in the WT20Is earlier. India next face seven-time reigning world champions Australia in a three-match WODI series at home beginning September 14, before co-hosting the Women's World Cup with Sri Lanka from September 30 to November 2. "Well, every game and every situation is different. Today was a totally different situation and different pitch, different atmosphere. But in home, conditions will be different," Harmanpreet, who was adjudged both player of the match and player of the series, said at the post-match press conference here on Tuesday. "But yeah, whenever you win, those things can always give you a positive mindset and keep you in a good place. "But whenever you are playing the next game, it's always you have to start from ball one and I think this series will definitely give us a lot of confidence. But again, when we go back, we have to start again things from the ball one." Asked what pleased her most from the England tour and what areas the team still needs to improve ahead of the World Cup, Harmanpreet replied: "Well, if you see our team is really working hard for so many years and this is the time where we are getting that reward. "I am really happy all the girls are coming up and coming up with positive mindset and working really hard on their fitness. "Right now, the kind of fitness you need in international cricket. We have understood a lot of things in the past few years and right now, just trying to pass that benchmark and setting ourselves in that position where people can talk about women's cricket, people can take women's cricket really seriously back home." Asked whether India and Australia now stand a step above the rest in women's cricket, Harmanpreet preferred to focus on overall growth. "Well, nowadays women's cricket is improving day by day. All the teams, if you see, they are batting really well. They are improving in bowling also. So I think every team is improving day by day and now it's only about who is going to play best cricket on that particular day. Harmanpreet's century was her seventh in ODIs, and also her first score above fifty in the format in 13 innings. Before this, her best in the two white-ball series in England was 26 in the fourth T20I. Reflecting on ending her lean run with the bat, she said: "Well, obviously in all the matches, I wanted to give my best in batting also. But today's game was very important for us. "The plan was to spend some time on the wicket and then see how things will go. And I think that thing really worked for me. In the first 11 balls, I didn't get any runs. "But then I was just talking to myself, I'm not going to lose myself. Just be there for the team and I think those things really helped me." Reaching the 4,000-run milestone in WODIs added another highlight to her day. "Yeah, it's always a great moment, adding those runs for your country. It means a lot to me and I wish to continue more for the country." The skipper was also full of praise for young seamer Kranti Goud, who grabbed 6/52 to restrict England to 305 and became the second-youngest Indian woman after Deepti Sharma to take a five-wicket haul in ODIs. She gifted her player of the match award to the young seamer. "She's been really impressive whenever she was on the field and bowling for the team. Today was also, we went with four spinners but we knew that Kranti is someone who can always give us a breakthrough in the initial moment. "And later on also, she's someone who can bowl really well for the team and really happy with the kind of bowling she did today. And whenever we needed a breakthrough, she was there for the team.
