Refused Trump invite as I had to visit land of Jagannath: PM Modi
US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi (File Image) BHUBANESWAR: PM Modi Friday said he had to say 'no' to US President Donald Trump's invitation to drop by in Washington on his way back from Canada, where he had gone for the G7 summit, as he did not want to miss his scheduled visit to the "land of Lord Jagannath", reports Ashok Pradhan. While Majhi's first anniversary as CM was on June 12, the Odisha govt timed the main celebration on Friday in sync with the PM's schedule. Any change in plan could have put the govt in an awkward position in a state where BJP swept the Lok Sabha polls, winning 20 of the 21 seats, and stormed into office by winning 78 of the 147 assembly seats. Speaking at a rally in Bhubaneswar to mark one year of Mohan Charan Majhi-led BJP govt in Odisha, PM Modi said, "The President of United States called me, saying, 'Since you are in Canada, please come over. We will have a meal together and talk.' I thanked him and politely declined, saying that visiting the land of Mahaprabhu (Lord Jagannath) was essential for me. The devotion for Mahaprabhu and your love drew me here." In what was Modi's sixth visit to the state in the past one year, the PM praised Odisha's progress under the BJP govt, emphasising the state's role in India's cultural and economic development. He highlighted initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, healthcare, and economic opportunities for the people of Odisha, particularly tribal communities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Attacking the previous Congress regimes, the PM said the party which governed India for decades had neglected the tribal community and "used them merely for political benefits". He said over 125 tribal-dominated districts were affected by Maoists for years. "Most of these districts were declared backward, and the then govts did not take the responsibility to develop them," Modi said. In contrast, the BJP-led govt freed tribal society from Naxal violence, ushering in development in these areas. The PM also highlighted the role of eastern India in the country's growth trajectory. "The development of 21st century India will gain momentum from eastern India. This is the era of Purvodaya."

TMC, BJP spar over Bengal foundation day
Kolkata: Trinamool and BJP clashed on Friday over Bengal foundation day. Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar alleged that police tried to stop a two-wheeler rally led by him from reaching Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's residence on Elgin Road. TMC criticised BJP, saying that the saffron party attempted to force a celebration that lacked spontaneity and with which people have no association. Centre has notified June 20 as statehood day in Bengal. Bengal govt has passed a resolution in the assembly and identified Poila Baisakh, the Bengali New Year's Day, for celebrating West Bengal Day. The Friday faceoff between activists of BJP Yuva Morcha and the city police took place outside the Bhowanipore residence of Jan Sangh founding member Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, where the workers had assembled to pay their respects to the leader and then planned to reach Netaji Bhavan, a kilometre away, on two-wheelers and on foot. Suvendu Adhikari, state leader of the opposition, earlier led a march of BJP legislators from the assembly premises to the statue of Syama Prasad Mookerjee on Red Road, about two kilometres away, and garlanded it. "This is a historic day which we must observe. On this day in 1947, the West Bengal Assembly under the leadership of Syama Prasad Mookerjee passed a resolution to remain in India," Adhikari said. It's a day close to the hearts of all Bengalis. The state assembly has already endorsed it. It doesn't matter where a motley band of BJP workers gather and try to force a celebration that lacks spontaneity and with which people have no direct association," said TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh. State parliamentary affairs minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay described it as "politically motivated", pointing out that state govt had already passed a resolution in the assembly and identified Poila Baisakh, the Bengali New Year's Day, for celebrating West Bengal Day. "Why is BJP suddenly so much worked up on June 20 as Paschimbanga Divas?" he asked.

Jalna crop aid scam: 21 officials suspended so far, 89 found guilty in inquiry
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Eighty-nine 89 govt employees have been found guilty in the ongoing collector-appointed committee inquiry into the crop compensation scam in Jalna district that involved the misappropriation of around Rs 40 crore in aid sanctioned for farmers between 2022 and 2024. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The accused include talathis, gram sevaks and agricultural assistants. District collector Shrikrishna Panchal has so far suspended 21 officials in connection with the scam. Last week, 10 talathis were suspended. On Thursday, action was taken against 11 more officials, including seven talathis and four assistant revenue staff. Those privy to the ongoing inquiry maintained that there was misuse of login credentials originally given to the revenue staffers for accessing the system. The inquiry, initiated after complaints from farmers, revealed that aid was granted by showing bogus claims, duplicating beneficiary names and issuing compensation to those without land ownership. The collector-appointed committee submitted its report confirming the financial misappropriation. Departmental inquiries have also been initiated against 35 more talathis. The inquiry report has recommended action against five tehsildars and six naib tehsildars. Their written explanations have been sought and the matter has been referred to state govt. Panchal confirmed that action was taken against officials who failed to give satisfactory replies to the explanation notices. The inquiry into other employees is still underway. He said once the inquiry was completed, the district administration was likely to register FIRs against those found guilty of usurping aid meant for compensating the crop losses resulting from natural calamities. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Former minister and BJP MLA Babanrao Lonikar has alleged that the scam was pegged at over Rs 100 crore and demanded immediate registration of FIRs against all govt officials. "I have raised this issue with CM Devendra Fadnavis. I am also going to take it up during the assembly session. The district administration should first push for FIRs against all the accused involved in the scam," Lonikar said. The MLA has demanded that there should not be any further delay in the FIRs against all the accused.
