After a long-drawn posture of bluster and theatrics over the Pahalgam attack, Pakistan's armed forces delivered a fitting blistering midnight riposte to the naked Indian aggression, striking military installations and shooting down at least three fighter jets, including two Rafale jets, deep inside enemy lines, security sources said in the early hours of Wednesday.
Pakistan's jaw-breaking response came moments after the coward enemy fired missiles from inside its territory on five cities, targeting mosques in Ahmedpur East in Bahawalpur district, Muzaffarabad, Kotli and Bagh in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), as well as Muridke in Punjab. The sources said three civilians embraced martyrdom during the strikes—one child died in Ahmedpur East in Bahawalpur district, sources said. Another child and a woman were martyred in Kotli, AJK Prime Minister Anwarul Haq said.
The sources said that Pakistani forces were giving a befitting reply to the naked Indian aggression, while damage assessment was being carried out. "According to initial reports, Pakistan Air Force has shot down three enemy aircraft, and all the PAF planes are safe," a source said.
Pakistan Army also shot down an Indian drone in Barnala sector, the sources added.
"Our valiant forces are giving a befitting reply to the enemy at several places. They have destroyed an enemy brigade headquarters in retaliation, and an army missile strike blew up in an enemy post in Dadyal sector along the LoC [Line of Control]."
According to the sources, India launched a cowardly attack in the wee hours of Wednesday targeting civilians in Masjid Subhanullah in Ahmedpur East and another mosque in the AJK capital. Videos of the spots clearly showed that only innocent and unarmed Pakistanis were targeted.
Earlier, the military spokesperson, confirmed that India had conducted missile strikes. "The Indian aircraft from their airspace have hit cities of Bahawalpur, Kotli and Muzaffarabad," Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) told a private television channel. He added that the airborne fighter jets of the PAF did not let the Indian aircraft enter the Pakistani airspace.
The DG ISPR said that this cowardly and shameful attack would be met with a befitting reply and the choice of place and time for it will be at the discretion of Pakistan. The sources said that India had targeted innocent Pakistanis in a cowardly attack in the dark of night, adding that "the blood of innocent Pakistanis will be avenged at all costs".
Following the strikes, the authorities closed the Islamabad airspace for all commercial flights, diverting three incoming planes to Peshawar. An emergency has been imposed in Rawalpindi hospitals and doctors and paramedics have been alerted.
After the cowardly attack by the vile enemy India at five places in the dark of night, the airspace of New Islamabad International Airport was closed and three flights in the air were diverted to other airports including Peshawar.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in a statement in the wake of India's attack, condemned the aggression, saying Pakistan reserves all rights to respond forcefully.
"The devious enemy has carried out cowardly attacks at five locations in Pakistan," he said, adding that a forceful response was being delivered.
"The entire nation stands with the Pakistan Armed Forces, and the morale and spirit of the Pakistani people are high," he said.
He added that the people of Pakistan and the armed forces know well how to deal with the enemy. "We will never allow the enemy to succeed in its nefarious designs."
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced closure of educational institutions in the province.
In a related development, a key meeting of the National Security Committee has been convened, according to Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar.
The minister said PM Shehbaz has summoned a meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) at 10 am today. High-level consultations on the national security situation will be held, with major decisions regarding national security expected.
"A crucial meeting has been called to thwart the enemy's designs," the minister added.
Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif delivered a clear warning from the headquarters of the country's premier spy agency that any Indian attempt to violate Pakistan's sovereignty and territorial integrity would be get a decisive response.
Shehbaz visited the headquarters of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in Islamabad along with senior cabinet members amid ongoing tensions with India.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Defence Minister, and the Services Chiefs in a carefully crafted move to convey a loud message to India that Pakistan was ready to deter any misadventure from across the border.
A statement issued by the Prime Minister Office said, at the ISI head office, a detailed briefing was given to participants on the prevailing security environment, with a particular focus on preparedness for conventional threat in the light of India's increasingly aggressive and provocative posture along Pakistan's Eastern border.

PTI senators assail govt's list of civil honours

ISLAMABAD: The Senate erupted into political crossfire on Friday as opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senators launched a blistering assault on the government's civil honours list, slamming it for decorating sitting ministers and loyal political allies under the guise of national recognition. The session, chaired by Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, opened with the announcement of a select group of senators receiving some of the country's highest civilian awards on August 14. Among them were Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik, alongside bureaucrat-turned-politician Ahad Cheema and Sherry Rehman– all aligned with the treasury benches or their coalition partners. The honours list, bearing a striking resemblance to a cabinet roster, featured scant recognition for cultural or civic contributors – a detail sharply criticised by PTI senators, who condemned the awards as blatant political patronage. PTI lawmakers were quick to express their disdain. 'What war did Atta Tarar fight,' questioned Senator Falak Naz of PTI, mocking what she described as the 'militarisation of mediocrity.' Another PTI senator Humayun Mohmand added with biting sarcasm: 'The real war strategist – Nawaz Sharif – was snubbed, despite masterminding our recent military doctrine with India.' As tensions rose, Senator Faisal Javed Khan of PTI lamented the absence of PTI's 'digital foot soldiers' – the party's online activists, whom he claimed 'fought the Battle of Truth by staying up all night exposing Indian propaganda.' Their exclusion, he argued, was not just political bias but 'a devaluation of the civil honours system itself.' In defence, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar insisted the awards recognised civilians and security personnel affected by recent unrest and urged critics to 'show magnanimity,' noting that diplomatic achievements had also been taken into account. The debate soon shifted to Independence Day government advertisements, with Senator Javed accusing the administration of erasing the image of Muhammad Ali Jinnah from the campaign, replaced instead by what he called a 'parade of the ruling dynasty.' He described this omission as 'not just shameful, but a betrayal of our history.' Tarar, visibly unsettled, said he was 'personally hurt' by the exclusion and promised a formal inquiry. 'Different institutions publish their own materials,' he said, 'but Quaid-e-Azam is our undisputed leader. We all follow him.' Despite the rancour, the Senate managed to pass a resolution marking Independence Day as the culmination of 'centuries of political struggle,' paying tribute to Pakistan's founders, constitutional architects, and armed forces. The resolution, moved by Law Minister Tarar, reaffirmed a commitment to protecting Pakistan's sovereignty, preserving democratic ethics, and building a prosperous future for coming generations. It pledged to pursue sustainable development, economic empowerment, and national unity. Honouring Jinnah's leadership, the resolution paid homage to all whose sacrifices secured Pakistan's independence. It acknowledged the armed forces and security institutions for their valor, paying tribute to martyrs and veterans while pledging to uphold their legacy. Special mention was made of parliamentarians who framed the constitution and advanced democratic reforms, with a reaffirmed commitment to parliamentary democracy, constitutional supremacy, and the rule of law. India plans new defence system

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the country on Friday to move towards more self-reliance, manufacture everything from fertilisers to jet engines and EV batteries, and vowed to protect farmers in the face of a trade conflict with Washington. With the punishing tariffs imposed on Indian exports by US President Donald Trump expected to hurt growth in the world's fastest growing major economy, Modi announced lower goods and services taxes (GST) from October — a move that could help boost consumption. He also announced India would set up a new defence system called 'Sudarshan Chakra' in the aftermath of India's four-day military conflict with Pakistan in May. He did not elaborate but a government statement said the system is aimed at neutralising enemy infiltrations and enhancing India's offensive capabilities. Indian defence and policy circles have informally referred to the Russian S-400 air defence system — which played a key role during the fighting with Pakistan — as Sudarshan Chakra, after a Hindu mythological weapon. Modi was addressing the nation on the occasion of its Independence Day at a time New Delhi has been struggling with Trump's tariffs and the collapse of trade talks, largely due to differences over imports of American farm and dairy products. "Farmers, fishermen, cattle rearers are our top priorities," Modi said in his customary annual address from the ramparts of the Red Fort in New Delhi. "Modi will stand like a wall against any policy that threatens their interests. India will never compromise when it comes to protecting the interests of our farmers," he said. Modi did not mention the tariffs or the US in his speech that lasted nearly two hours. Last week, Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, citing New Delhi's continued imports of Russian oil in a move that sharply escalated tensions between the two nations. The new import tax will raise duties on some Indian exports to as high as 50% — among the highest levied on any US trading partner. Modi has never spoken about the tariffs directly, only alluding to them in a speech last week, where he swore to protect the interests of farmers, even if it came at a personal price. Farmers are a key political constituency in India and they violently protested against Modi's last big push to reform the sector, forcing him to repeal three farm laws in 2021 in what was a rare defeat for him. Tax cuts to boost consumption Although local manufacturing and self-reliance have been Modi's key focus areas for years now, the push is seen to have gained urgency amid ongoing global trade tensions and supply chain disruptions. "The need of the hour is to take a resolve for building a strong India ... I want our traders, shopkeepers to display boards for 'Swadeshi' products," Modi said, using the Hindi word for made in India goods. Reuters
