India plans new defence system
With the punishing tariffs imposed on Indian exports by US President Donald Trump expected to hurt growth in the world's fastest growing major economy, Modi announced lower goods and services taxes (GST) from October — a move that could help boost consumption.
He also announced India would set up a new defence system called 'Sudarshan Chakra' in the aftermath of India's four-day military conflict with Pakistan in May. He did not elaborate but a government statement said the system is aimed at neutralising enemy infiltrations and enhancing India's offensive capabilities.
Indian defence and policy circles have informally referred to the Russian S-400 air defence system — which played a key role during the fighting with Pakistan — as Sudarshan Chakra, after a Hindu mythological weapon.
Modi was addressing the nation on the occasion of its Independence Day at a time New Delhi has been struggling with Trump's tariffs and the collapse of trade talks, largely due to differences over imports of American farm and dairy products.
"Farmers, fishermen, cattle rearers are our top priorities," Modi said in his customary annual address from the ramparts of the Red Fort in New Delhi.
"Modi will stand like a wall against any policy that threatens their interests. India will never compromise when it comes to protecting the interests of our farmers," he said.
Modi did not mention the tariffs or the US in his speech that lasted nearly two hours. Last week, Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, citing New Delhi's continued imports of Russian oil in a move that sharply escalated tensions between the two nations.
The new import tax will raise duties on some Indian exports to as high as 50% — among the highest levied on any US trading partner. Modi has never spoken about the tariffs directly, only alluding to them in a speech last week, where he swore to protect the interests of farmers, even if it came at a personal price.
Farmers are a key political constituency in India and they violently protested against Modi's last big push to reform the sector, forcing him to repeal three farm laws in 2021 in what was a rare defeat for him.
Tax cuts to boost consumption
Although local manufacturing and self-reliance have been Modi's key focus areas for years now, the push is seen to have gained urgency amid ongoing global trade tensions and supply chain disruptions.
"The need of the hour is to take a resolve for building a strong India ... I want our traders, shopkeepers to display boards for 'Swadeshi' products," Modi said, using the Hindi word for made in India goods. Reuters

Marka-e-Haq 14th August Youm-e-Azaadi: Message from Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military) Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee
On this historic day of 14 August 2025, as we proudly celebrate 78th Independence Day of Pakistan, our hearts resonate with profound gratitude for the unwavering sacrifices of our forefathers, whose courage and determination transformed the dream of freedom into a lasting reality. This day reminds us that entire nation of Pakistan, together with our valiant Armed Forces, stands united against all challenges, including economic difficulties, and reaffirms our strong resolve to foster unity and safeguard territorial integrity of our beloved country. Indeed, by the will of Allah Almighty, Pakistan continues on its path towards sustainable peace and stability. In today's evolving geostrategic and geopolitical environment, our adversaries strive to undermine Pakistan, both internally and externally. Yet, the nation remains steadfast, navigating these challenges with resilience while upholding its national pride with dignity. Recently, India's unprovoked attempt to violate the sanctity of our borders under the pretext of a false flag operation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir was responded with a resolute and humiliating defeat to India. As a responsible and peace loving nation, Pakistan offered neutral, transparent and credible investigation to ascertain the facts. However, India responded with blatant acts of aggression, challenging the sovereignty of our beloved homeland. In response to this unprovoked aggression, Pakistan while exercising necessary restraint, launched OperationBunyan-um-Marsoos and carried out precision strikes against all those military targets that attempted to violate the integrity of our borders. Indeed, this operation was not only a military action, it was testament to our superior strategic wisdom and unbreakable bond between Armed Forces and people of Pakistan, united in the Defence of our homeland as a strong and a resilient shield. Today, I would like to pay my heartfelt tribute to our brave and valiant Shuhada, whose supreme sacrifices have paved way for a secure and prosperous future of Pakistan. I also take this opportunity to acknowledge the pivotal role of our younger generation and well-informed media, who remained at the forefront in countering the misinformation and disinformation campaigns launched by our adversaries, setting a profound example of patriotism and devotion to the country. In prevailing security environment, Pakistan is encountered with multifaceted threat conundrum, primarily emanating from Indian state-sponsored terrorism in the shape of Fitna al-Hindustan and Fitna al-Khuwarij. Our enemy continues its quest to destabilize Pakistan, however, every time any attempt to create internal and external instability has been valiantly foiled by our illustrious Armed Forces. Let this be known that Pakistan is a peace loving country, yet we fully remain prepared for war. Now, it depends on the enemy, which path it chooses. Regardless of India's provocative and reckless behavior, Pakistan remains a responsible nation that will continue to play its role as a responsible nuclear power in the South Asian Region. The international community must recognize, how an arrogant and conceited nuclear armed India has blatantly ignored international laws and carried out irresponsible actions that have severely undermined regional stability. It must be remembered that sustainable peace and stability in South Asian region is not possible without the just and fair resolution of Kashmir issue in accordance with the wishes of our Kashmiri brethren and relevant United Nations resolutions. On this momentous day, let us reaffirm our unwavering resolve that Armed Forces of Pakistan will firmly stand in solidarity with our Kashmiri brothers and we will continue to extend our diplomatic, political and moral support in their relentless struggle for freedom. Once again, we bow our heads in gratitude to Allah Almighty for granting us the priceless blessing of freedom. It is now our solemn duty to remain united and strive for the prosperous future of Pakistan. I am confident that in pursuit of this goal, Pakistan Armed Forces will always uphold the nation's trust with steadfast dedication and unwavering commitment. May Allah Almighty be our protector and bless us with strength, resolve and courage to meet every challenge with dignity and honor (Ameen). Reserves edge up, rupee gains for 4th week
Pakistan's foreign exchange reserves recorded a slight improvement during the week ended August 8, 2025, with the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) holdings rising $11 million to $14.243 billion. According to data released by the central bank, the country's total liquid foreign reserves stood at $19.497 billion. Of this, commercial banks held net reserves of $5.254 billion, while the SBP accounted for the remaining $14.243 billion. Moreover, on Friday, the SBP injected around Rs12 trillion into the banking system through a reverse repo auction. The market operation included Rs191 billion for seven-day tenors at 11.04% and Rs11.812 trillion for 14-day tenors at 11.01%. The Pakistani rupee extended its upward momentum, marking its fourth consecutive week of gains against the US dollar. According to Ismail Iqbal Securities, the local currency appreciated 0.06% day-on-day to close at 282.06 against the greenback. On a calendar-year-to-date basis, however, the rupee has depreciated 1.25%, while in the current fiscal year to date, it has gained 0.60%. AKD Securities noted that the rupee gained for the fourth consecutive week against the US dollar. Meanwhile, gold prices in Pakistan fell, tracking global trends, where the yellow metal edged higher but remained on course for a weekly loss as hotter-than-expected US inflation data dampened prospects of near-term interest rate cuts. Market attention has shifted to the much-anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. In the local market, the price of gold per tola dropped Rs1,000 to Rs357,100, according to the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association. The price of 10-gram gold also declined, settling at Rs306,155, after a decrease of Rs858. Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, gold had slipped by Rs200 per tola to Rs358,100. Interactive Commodities Director Adnan Agar noted that the gold market has seen limited movement, with prices fluctuating within a narrow range of about $10 to $15. "The market is relatively stable because of the Russia-US summit. Any significant shift will likely be seen on Monday once the outcome of talks becomes clear," he said. Spot gold rose 0.2% to $3,342.62 per ounce by 11:16 am EDT (1516 GMT), but was down 1.7% for the week, according to Reuters.
