Nepal man identifies son by tattoo on severed hand after Pauri flood; wife, baby still missing
The family had been staying in a tent at a makeshift camp in Bankura village while working on a road construction project in Pauri when a flash flood hit the area last Wednesday, a day after a massive flood hit Dharali in Uttarkashi Vinit Vaibhav, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) officer, said the search for the missing bodies was continuing despite adverse weather. "We are putting in all efforts to find them. Hope, we will succeed soon," he said.
Speaking to TOI from Nepal over the phone, Narendra's uncle Uttam Khadka said that after learning about the incident, Narendra's father, Churamani, travelled to Pauri Garhwal with his brother-in-law. "He hoped to receive their bodies and see their faces for one last time, but could only receive the severed hand of his son. He recognised it after seeing the tattoo of his wife's name. The two then returned home with it and cremated it as the only mortal remains," Uttam said.
Uttam added that the family had moved to Uttarakhand about four months ago to work as labourers. "He had a married sister and an elder brother in the Nepal army who lives separately with his wife and children. Narendra was the only one caring for his elderly parents. He promised to return home for our biggest festival, Dussehra, with his earnings to make the celebrations joyful. Sadly, this remained only a dream. We accept it was beyond anyone's control, but we still cannot accept that the little soul, who was yet to learn speaking, is no more," he said.
Appealing to the Centre and Uttarakhand govt, Uttam urged them to provide support to Narendra's parents. "The Nepalese authorities met the grieving parents and assured them of help. We request the Indian authorities to help them with whatever they can," he said.
