'A tearful tribute to the people's hero, beloved comrade VS, who made his life a struggle… He will never die in the minds of Malayalis,' wrote Mohanlal.
("The people's leader who turned life itself into a struggle – heartfelt tributes in tears to our beloved comrade V.S. Serving three times as the Leader of the Opposition and once as the Chief Minister, he always remained steadfast in his principles and ideals. In the hearts of Malayalis, he will never die.")

It was with that very foot that he walked into the hearts of the people. And because he carried that wound in every step, he remained a fighter forever. His stance on women's safety was not just progressive, but a necessity of the times.
A heartfelt tribute to the leader who gave true meaning to his name."
VS Achuthanandan: The people's own warrior leader

A towering presence in Kerala politics, Achuthanandan served as Chief Minister once and Leader of the Opposition three times, remaining firm in his ideals and a symbol of resistance and reform. His family — wife Vasumathi and children V A Arunkumar and V V Asha — were by his side during his final moments.

Dhirios banned in Goa, but still held: Petitioner to HC

Panaji: Govt has assured the high court that it would look into the issue of bullfights, known as 'dhirios' in Goa. Advocate general Devidas Pangam gave this assurance after the HC was informed that dhirios were occurring rampantly in the state. Radhakrishna Salgaonkar has filed a contempt petition in the HC, alleging that despite the court's directions and a ban on bullfights in Goa, the activity has continued unabated. As proof, he presented an Instagram post promoting bullfights. He also drew the court's attention to a detailed complaint he had made to authorities, including the chief secretary, the DGP, the Animal Welfare Board, the director of animal husbandry and veterinary services, and the cybercrime police station. He alleged that none of the authorities took any cognisance of his complaint. The HC told the advocate general to obtain instructions regarding Salgaonkar's contention that some social media profiles were now deleted, but information about bullfights, and the sale of bulls for these fights, remained on social media. The division bench of the HC said that before issuing a notice to govt under the Contempt of Courts Act, the advocate general has assured the court that he would look into the matter. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Are Watching Tariffs - Few Are Watching What Nvidia Just Launched Seeking Alpha Read More Undo The court asked Salgaonkar to provide any information on dhirios to the advocate general and directed that the petition be listed on Aug 18. In 2023, the HC directed the DGP to prepare an action plan to prevent bullfights in Goa. The court directed the DGP to identify the organisers and suggest mechanisms with which police officers would be granted authority to prevent bullfights. People for Animals filed a contempt petition attaching several news reports, including six by TOI between Jan and Aug 2021, on bullfights taking place in Goa and bulls dying as a result. TOI reported at the time that bullfights were occurring almost every day between 3pm and 4pm, when there was less movement on roads, in the jurisdiction of the Colva police station. Statistics at the time indicated that South Goa accounted for double the illegal bullfight cases compared to North Goa, with the HC informed that most of these took place in the jurisdiction of the Colva police station. In Jan this year, TOI reported that one of the attendees of a bullfight near Benaulim beach was gored to death. Last month, the South Goa collector held a high-level law and order coordination meeting to prevent such events. The collector issued directions to police to maintain round-the-clock surveillance and take immediate action to prevent dhirios. She directed the deployment of various intelligence-gathering methods to identify locations where the illegal activities were being planned and to ensure swift intervention.

Revanth calls for revival of ideology-driven politics, recalls Jaipal Reddy's contribution to politics

Emphasising the need to revive ideology-driven politics over the prevailing 'politics of management,' Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy called for the promotion of diverse political thought among students in universities. He urged the aspiring politicians to emulate former minister S Jaipal Reddy, who always stood by his principles. Speaking at the ICFAI & Capital Foundation Society's S. Jaipal Reddy Memorial Award function held here on Saturday, Mr. Reddy highlighted the latter's contributions to both State and national politic,s besides his decisive role in the creation of Telangana State. 'Jaipal Reddy, a towering personality, is the pride of Telangana, next only to former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao in many aspects,' he said, congratulating the award recipient, Mohan Guruswamy, an economist and policy analyst from Hyderabad. Later, he conferred the award on Mr. Guruswamy. Recalling the key role played by the former Union Minister in the creation of Telangana State, Mr. Reddy noted, 'During his student days, Jaipal Reddy opposed the formation of Telangana. But later, he worked tirelessly for the State's creation. The dream of Telangana would not have been realised without his support and his efforts to convince Sonia Gandhi as well as the Opposition leaders.' The Chief Minister also recalled the political and administrative reforms initiated by Jaipal Reddy during his tenure as Union Minister. Expressing concern over the ever-increasing role of money in elections, Mr. Reddy called for stringent measures to curb its influence and safeguard democratic values in the country. He lamented that activists have disappeared from politics while volunteers have increased, and urged that the legacy of leaders like P.V. Narasimha Rao and Jaipal Reddy must continue to inspire public life. Referring to Jaipal Reddy's administrative acumen, he praised the decisions taken by him as Union Petroleum Minister as 'impeccable' and commended his role as Information and Broadcasting Minister, stating that his initiatives benefited even Opposition parties. Mr. Reddy noted that Jaipal Reddy served the people for five decades—from 1969 to 2019—and recalled his efforts to bring electricity to Kalwakurthy when he was its MLA. He also referred to Reddy's oratory skills, which earned him the Best Parliamentarian Award. On democratic rights, the Chief Minister said that no MLA had been suspended from the Assembly since he assumed office, and that Dharna Chowk was reinstated immediately after he became Chief Minister. K Purishotham Reddy, executive president of Capital Foundation, and LS Ganesh, Vice-Chancellor of ICFAI Foundation for Higher Education, were among present.

Odisha chief minister Mohan Majhi. (File Photo) State BJP chief Manmohan Samal, who arrived in Bhubaneswar on Saturday after meeting senior party leaders in Delhi, said a reshuffle in the state cabinet is likely within the next 15 to 30 days. 'The responsibility of cabinet expansion lies with the chief minister. The decision on who will be inducted into the cabinet and on what basis, will be taken by the BJP's Parliamentary Board,' said Samal. As Odisha can have a maximum of 22 ministers, six more ministers can be inducted. People aware of the matter said 15 ministers have been asked to give presentations before the CM through powerpoint slides summing up the performance and efficiency of their respective departments. 'The ministers have been asked to give their achievements between June 2024 and May 2025 and the targets for the ongoing financial year. All the achievements have to be given in quantitative and budgetary spending. Besides, they would have to detail difficulties and challenges faced for implementation of various government programmes and steps taken to alleviate those challenges in governance,' said the person aware of the matter. Apart from this the ministers have been asked to detail the internal mechanism of clearing routine files as well as those dealing with programme implementation and policy issues. They have been asked to give a clear timeline for preparation of Annual Action Plan as well as monitoring and evaluation mechanism within the department. One official said as CM Majhi is focussed more on grievance redressal, the ministers have been asked to give details of resolution of each department with clear marker on how many were resolved within 7 days, 8-21 days, 22 -45 days and after 45 days. 'The ministers have been asked to detail the number of grievances they have attended physically (apart from participating in CM's grievance meetings),' he said. In addition to this, they have been asked to submit any new initiatives and policy reforms initiated by their departments for effective governance as well as technology adoption and integration like digital tools, automation or using Al for efficiency,' the official said. During the review with the chief minister, the ministers concerned would also have to give details of their participation on social media platforms. 'Each minister would have to give the number of average monthly posts on X, Facebook and Instagram. Only those posts related to their department, government- mandated visits, national or state issues and shared posts of Prime Minister and chief minister would be taken into consideration. The individual or social event postings unrelated to government programmes would not be considered,' said the official.
