CNN Plans Launch Of New Streaming Service This Fall
CNN is planning to launch roll out a subscription streaming service this fall, its latest attempt to gain a foothold in the market.
A CNN spokesperson confirmed plans for the service, which would be a mix of live programming and on-demand content.

The details of the new service will be unveiled on Wednesday as Warner Bros. Discovery makes its upfront presentation to advertisers.
The network launched a much-heralded service, CNN+, in 2022, in which the network hired top name talent to create alternate programming, while offering subscribers an array of documentaries and original series from its library. But the network was a bust and was folded after just a month.
CNN Worldwide CEO Mark Thompson announced plans for the streaming service in January. He wrote to employees that they 'plan to develop a new way for digital subscribers at home and abroad to stream news programming from us on any device they choose. It's early days but we've already established that there's immense demand for it not just in America but across much of the world.'
CNN already has a streaming presence on Max, launched after the failure of CNN+, that mirrors a significant share of linear content. But in his memo in January, Thompson wrote that they will 'continue to have a strong presence on Max, but we also believe it is not a complete answer to the future of the great linear CNN experience.'
CNN also has started a paywall for CNN.com following an upgrade. According to The New York Times, which first reported on the launch plans, the streaming service would be tied to the subscription product. Existing linear cable subscribers also will have access. One of the difficulties for news networks in offering streaming options are agreements with traditional TV distributors, even as cable and satellite subscriptions are on the decline.
Fox News launched a subscription offering, Fox Nation, in 2018, and it offers a mix of original content, including entertainment programming, along with on-demand streams of some of its linear programming. MSNBC has a streaming presence on Peacock, the NBCU subscription service, and it is unclear what kind of offering it will have following its separation from parent Comcast later this year.

George Clooney, Sarah Snook, Nicole Scherzinger and More Stun on the Red Carpet Ahead of the 78th Tony Awards
It couldn't rain on anyone's parade ahead of the 78th Tony Awards. On Sunday evening, Broadway's finest, including George Clooney, Mia Farrow, Lea Michele and Tonys host Cynthia Erivo, gathered outside of Radio City Music Hall under a covered red carpet, avoiding the dreary New York City weather. Additional attendees included Sarah Paulson, Keanu Reeves, Sadie Sink, Katie Holmes and Michelle Williams. More from WWD Amal Clooney Drips in Pearls at Tony Awards 2025 With White Tamara Ralph Gown, George Clooney Keeps it Classic in Tuxedo Cynthia Erivo Holds Court in Schiaparelli Gown and 3D Floral Nail Art at Tony Awards 2025 Cole Escola Pays Tribute to Bernadette Peters in Custom Wiederhoeft Dress at Tony Awards 2025 Throughout the evening, there was one word on nearly everyone's lips: 'Hamilton,' as the original Broadway cast would be performing during the event to celebrate the show's 10th anniversary on Broadway. Much of the cast, including creator Lin Manuel Miranda, Jonathan Groff, Daveed Diggs, Christopher Jackson, Phillipa Soo, Leslie Odom Jr. and Reneé Elise Goldsberry, walked the carpet embracing other stars who were buzzing with excitement for what the performance could be. 'This is a reunion of sorts, but so many of us see each other regularly,' said original cast member Emmy Raver-Lampman. 'It hasn't been this capacity of all 28 of us being in a room together [so] that is something really special.' Of the night ahead, Diggs said: '[It's] strong turn-up vibes. Wherever these cats are afterward is where you're going to want to be.' Attendees were equally as excited to see Erivo host the award show for the first time. 'I am very excited to just watch her sing her face off,' said James Monroe Iglehart, who donned Dolce & Gabana sneakers and is nominated for his role in 'A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical.' Meanwhile, many were eager to see Groff from 'Just in Time,' who also took home the Tony award for best actor in a musical for his role in 'Merrily We Roll Along' last season. Michele, who most recently starred in the revival of 'Funny Girl' walked with her costars Nicholas Christopher and Aaron Tveit from the upcoming product of 'Chess.' While walking the carpet, Michele gushed about her two friends, former 'Glee' costars and nominees Groff and Darren Criss, who she called 'family.' On the carpet, Farrow, who was nominated for her role in 'The Roommate' alongside Patti Lupone, gushed: 'I hope Jonathan Groff is singing.' Farrow also discussed how honored she was to be in the presence of so many Broadway legends. 'I'm in a zone where I have met some really wonderful people in the Broadway community, and that's been exhilarating for me,' she said. 'People I admire so much I get weak-kneed, they're so good and they've been so kind to welcome me, because I'm really not of the community.…I hope to do another play soon. I want to stay [and] keep doing plays.' Actors' Equity Association president Brooke Shields was similarly excited to celebrate all the works from this season. 'It's just nice to see people feeling celebrated. I love this night,' she said. In true Broadway fashion, the carpet included a few surprise moments, most notably a visit from 'The Phantom of the Opera,' who is returning to the New York City theater scene via a top secret immersive experience opening later this summer. Similarly, theater and film fans alike were surprised to learn last week that Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the 'Harry Potter' series, would be reprising his role in 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' on Broadway. 'It's all a bit daunting,' the actor said, adding that he plans to lean on costar and now Broadway regular Daniel Radcliffe for advice. 'I thought it was an elaborate prank when they asked me to do this, and it turns out it's not. I've missed him. Last time I saw him was 16 years ago, and now I get to pick up exactly where we left off, but now Draco is an adult.' He added: 'I know it's familiar. I know how to pronounce the word Potter, but other than that, it's a completely new set of shoes I'm stepping into.' Eager to celebrate Broadway history, many attendees donned looks inspired by current shows and iconic moments in theater history. Shields, who also wore a diamond ring gifted to her by Michael Jackson, sported a bag made out of red curtains from Radio City Music Hall before it was renovated. 'Oh, Mary' creator and star Cole Escola wore a custom Wiederhoeft gown, inspired by Bernadette Peters' look from the 1999 Tony awards. Harry Lennix wore a custom brooch featuring the logo of 'Purpose,' the nominated play which he currently stars in. Meanwhile, Adam Lambert, who recently finished their Broadway run in 'Cabaret,' donned a silver Alexander McQueen suit completed with silver hair, body glitter, silver nails and metallic accessories. Of the inspiration behind the look, they said, 'I was inspired by a Tony award. Literally that was my inspo.' Lambert also said they planned to 'cram in' as many after parties as possible. While many stars, including Groff and Felton, lingered on the carpet mingling with friends, reporters and photographers, many were ushered across quickly. 'Death Becomes Her' stars Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard hustled across the carpet within minutes of each other. Erivo was similarly rushed in to get ready for her hosting duties. Just as the red carpet was closing down, three of the most talked about stars of the night, Nicole Scherzinger of 'Sunset Blvd.,' Sarah Snook of 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' and George Clooney of 'Good Night, and Good Luck,' who walked hand-in-hand with wife Amal Clooney, quickly scurried in waving hi to all the cameras. Scherzinger closed out the carpet by blowing a kiss as she ran in for a jam-packed night at Radio City Music Hall. Sadie Sink, Cynthia Erivo and Nicole Scherzinger Attend Official Tony Awards After Party at the MoMA
The Museum of Modern Art was the first stop of the night for the Tonys crowd. Just after the Tony Awards 78th annual ceremony ended, guests quickly made their way from Radio City Musical Hall to the museum, where the official after party was being held for the first time, sponsored by City National Bank. It was clear celebrations were in order, as many entered the venue already on the hunt for a stiff drink. Just after making it through the revolving door, one partygoer immediately shouted to her group, 'I need the bar,' while another struggled to carry three glasses of Champagne through the crowded venue. Immediately after walking into the space Lawrence, who attended with her brother, found her 'The Sex Lives of College Girls' costar Alyah Chanelle Scott, who also starred in the play 'All Nighter' this season. After posing for several solo shots, Lawrence asked 'But are they good?' Other winners in attendance included Natalie Venetia Belcon, who took home the Tony for featured actress in a musical for her role in 'Buena Vista Social Club,' and Kara Young, who won for her role in 'Purpose.' Upon entering the venue, partygoers were met with flashes from photographers and blaring music, which was decidedly not Broadway themed…at least to start. Sink danced her way into the venue, shimmying to Beyoncé Knowles-Carter's 'Cuff It' blasting over the speakers. Julianne Hough, who later hosted her own party alongside Darren Criss at the Crane Club, bounced in, spinning to showcase her dress when photographers found her. When asked her favorite part of the evening, she responded: 'Nicole [Scherzinger] winning, absolutely.' Erika Henningsen, who recently starred in the Netflix show 'The Four Seasons' and is now in 'Just in Time' on Broadway, seconded that Scherzinger winning the Tony for best actress in a musical for her role in 'Sunset Blvd.' was the highlight of the evening. 'My theater kid came back out tonight,' Henningsen joked, adding that her hot pink dress was a nod to her former role in 'Mean Girls' and her current role as Sandra Dee in 'Just in Time.' Scherzinger made it into the party very briefly, seemingly just entering to take a few photos and head on to her next celebration. However, guests flocked to the entrance to see her pose with her Tony and share a heartfelt moment with host Cynthia Erivo. The duo held each other's hand — Scherzinger, of course, clutched her Tony in the other — and giggled before posing for a few shots, sneaking out as quickly as they had entered. While to kickstart the night, the music choices avoided any sort of showtimes, special performances by Emily Bear and Abigail Barlow of Barlow & Bear, Loren Allred, Casey Likes, Dylan Mulvaney, Solea Pfeiffer and Jessica Vosk proved that theater nerds cannot be stopped. A rendition of 'Waving Through a Window' from the musical 'Dear Evan Hansen,' in particular, had attendees singing and dancing. Before and after the performances, many flitted over to a section sponsored by Korean beauty brand TirTir, where they could pop into a photo booth with friends or try their hand at a claw machine to win a lip gloss keychain or Labubu doll keychain — the Labubus were hard to come by and guests were limited at two tries each to many's chagrin. Following their first stop of the night, the Tonys crowd hit their next round of parties, including private cast celebrations and nominee-hosted bashes. For Tony Award Winner Kara Young, ‘Purpose' Is History-making
Kara Young is on a roll. Four Broadway shows in four years, with Tony nominations for each of those performances, she's one of two performers to have achieved the feat of four consecutive nominations. (The other is Laurie Metcalf.) Last year, Young won for best featured actress in a play for her role in 'Purlie Victorious.' If she wins again this year for her role in 'Purpose,' she'll be the first Black person to take home two consecutive Tonys. 'What has happened, and what the realities are, I have not absorbed any of it,' says Young of her historic four-year nomination streak. 'I've been going from play to play to play, to filming, to play. So I haven't had quite a second to just take it all in.' More from WWD The Official Tony Awards After Party Heads to MoMA Inside the 'Witchy Circle' of the 'John Proctor Is the Villain' Cast Sarah Hyland Doubles Down on Tonal Dressing in Patrizia Pepe Set With Chocolate Brown Pumps at 2025 Drama Desk Awards She's in good company: four of Young's costars are also nominated for their performances in the play, which is still going strong with an extension through August 31. It's the week before the Tony awards ceremony, and Young has been spending much of her down time between performances doing press. But the actress appears to be an endless well of energy, attention, and gratitude for whatever task is in front of her. More often than not, that task is bringing her character Aziza to life onstage from a Pulitzer-winning script by Branden Jacobs Jenkins, who also wrote last season's Tony-winning 'Appropriate.' 'I feel incredibly honored to be working with him this time around,' says Young, who stars as the effervescent Aziza. 'And I'm sure that also the Tony nominations add to the sense of popularity around the show as well.' Asked if she's felt a new sense of buzz leading up to the awards ceremony, Young is insistent the energy has been there since the beginning. 'I remember people feeling quite electric after that first dress rehearsal,' says Young. 'People felt the thing that I think they're feeling now, too.' The six-cast show takes place inside the Jasper family home in Chicago. Naz, the show's narrator, tells the audience that he recently agreed to be a sperm donor for his New York neighbor turned close queer friend Aziza. The pair meet up for the donation in Niagara Falls, Naz misses his flight home, and Aziza offers to drive him. Walking into his parent's impressive house, Aziza quickly discovers that her lowkey friend from the city is actually the son of a famous civil rights activist, and his brother is a politician who has just served time for campaign-fund fraud. There's a winter storm brewing outside, and Aziza is invited to stay for dinner, and the night. Naturally, all that glitters is not gold. And since this is a Branden Jacobs Jenkins family drama, there's a lot of tarnish hiding under the surface. And humor, much of it delivered by Young. 'One of the most meaningful things that I hear after the show is, 'I saw this three times,'' says Young of audience reaction. 'Or, 'I'm coming back and I'm bringing my mom,' or 'I'm bringing my dad. I'm bringing my family. We're pulling up.' There was one woman from Harlem who rolled 20 deep.' One of those large groups were students from Young's former Harlem high school. When Young heard that the teenagers were able to see themselves reflected in her character, an unapologetic social worker also from Harlem, 'It just shook me to my core,' she says. And then there was the 105-year-old woman who was in the audience the night before, who reminded Young of her own grandmother, who passed away at the age of 105 shortly after seeing Young perform in 'Purlie.' For Young, the purpose of the Tony nominations seems to encompass all of that: continuing to tell stories, continuing to connect with audiences. So while she hasn't processed what all of the Tony nominations mean, it does seem to be an invitation to continue. Earlier this week, Young and Kerry Washington were announced as the stars of a new production of the Whoopi Goldberg-penned solo show 'The Whoopi Monologues,' which will be staged next summer. 'I want to experience all facets of storytelling, in all of the mediums,' says Young, whose screen projects include 'I'm a Virgo.' 'I would love to do more film and television. I would love to continue to do theater; it's my foundation. But the stories — the stories — feel like the thing that matter,' she adds. 'And it feels like a very ancestral thing that we're doing every day in a theater, in an enclosed space where people get to be together.' In May, Young attended the Met Gala, dressed by Maxwell Osborne's AnOnlyChild. Her suited look was accessorized with a Judith Leiber beehive-shaped handbag, an homage to a central beekeeping metaphor running throughout 'Purpose.' Asked about a highlight from the night, Young roots the memory in fashion. 'The exhibit was incredible,' says Young. 'I got to see Frederick Douglass' glasses, his hat, his top coat. I was like, oh my God — what am I witnessing right now? There was Prince's iconic white shirt…' On Sunday, she'll continue her own fashion story. Last year, Young accepted her first Tony Award wearing a chartreuse chiffon gown by Bibhu Mohapatra. And this year she'll be wearing… ' I think it'll be a very nice follow-up to what she wore to the Met,' teases her stylist Mary Gigler. 'There's a nice continuation there, fully encompassing what Kara does in a storytelling aspect. I think it [will] kind of sum it all up in a nice way. It'll be a moment.' Speaking of moments: the night's pre-performance fight call was drawing closer, and after an afternoon of press, Young's next agenda item was to get her head back in 'the game' before emerging onstage to a fresh round of applause. ' I'm gonna take a second to drink some tea and get my head back in the books,' says Young, while seeming in no rush to go. ' Wind down — before I have to wind up.'
