CNN to Launch New Streaming Product and Standalone Weather App
CNN is stepping back into the streaming waters with the launch of a new streaming product in the fall of 2025. Network CEO Mark Thompson officially confirmed the launch during Warner Bros. Discovery's TV upfront at Madison Square Garden in New York on Wednesday. No official name or pricing was presented for the streaming service, but it will be part of CNN's new All Access subscription service tier. This will be CNN's second attempt at launching a full-scale streaming product. In April 2022, WBD shuttered CNN+, which had been in existence for less than a month. The network says this new offering will have plenty of options for subscribers to engage with the network's journalism and original programming. Those options include a selection of live channels, catch-up features, and video-on-demand programming across the CNN mobile app, connected TV apps, and 'CNN has been leading and innovating in video-led journalism since its inception, and the expansion of our subscription offering to include streaming embodies that pioneering spirit,' said Alex MacCallum, executive vice president of digital products and services. 'We're giving audiences an even more convenient way to access CNN's trusted reporting and original programming-brought together in one intuitive, easy-to-use experience.' Existing CNN linear subscribers will be able to log in to the new streamer at no additional cost, and the network says it will still remain part of the Max-soon to be renamed HBO Max-platform. CNN introduced its All Access tier in October 2024, with a metered digital paywall on its website for U.S. visitors. Users are able to read a select number of stories, before having to pay a $3.99 subscription fee of $3.99 to unlock additional access, plus subscriber-only content. CNN+ was priced at $5.99 per month and $59.99 annually, and allowed access to 8-12 live daily shows, new original series, and a library of more than 1,000 hours of programming. It was reported to have had around 150,000 subscribers at the time of its demise. That previous service was supposed to intended to serve as a placeholder for the network's streaming ambitions and a revenue-generating option apart from its linear channel. Since CNN+ was shut down, the network has had a minimal streaming presence apart from a dedicated tab on the Max streaming service. Besides the new streamer, the network also announced CNN Weather as its first digital lifestyle product. The standalone app will blend weather and climate reporting with user-friendly features that offer real-time weather information. CNN received acclaim for its coverage of the Los Angeles-area wildfires in January. The network also received an Outstanding Breaking News Coverage Emmy nomination for its coverage of Hurricane Milton.

New CNN Streaming Service to Launch This Fall With Free Subscriptions for Cable Subscribers
The upcoming new CNN streaming service will launch sometime this fall, CEO Mark Thompson informed employees on Tuesday. The news, first reported by the New York Times, comes 3 years after CNN shuttered CNN+, the network's previous attempt to enter the streaming marker, just one month after launch. While speaking to staffers, Thompson revealed at least one major difference between the new service and CNN plus — that existing cable TV subscribers will receive a free subscription. He also said the new streaming service will be tied to the network's new subscription product, according to NYT. The new service will also offer a more stripped-down experience very similar to watching CNN on television, and will feature a great deal of content from CNN itself. Details such as price and what the service will be called have not been made public. However, according to Oliver Darcy, the new service will simply be called CNN. When asked for comment, representatives for CNN confirmed the accuracy of the Times report and indicated more details will be provided Wednesday during parent company Warner Bros. Discovery's upfronts presentation. CNN first announced the new streaming service in January as part of a post-election pivot to a more digital focus that also included more than 200 layoffs. According to the New York Times, Thompson has indicated plans to hire around that many people for the new service. While CNN is expected to remain present on Max, this new streamer will be similar to its TV offerings. Another subscription-based model will be set around lifestyle content, such as food and fitness. CNN Plans Launch Of New Streaming Service This Fall
CNN is planning to launch roll out a subscription streaming service this fall, its latest attempt to gain a foothold in the market. A CNN spokesperson confirmed plans for the service, which would be a mix of live programming and on-demand content. Discovery makes its upfront presentation to advertisers. The network launched a much-heralded service, CNN+, in 2022, in which the network hired top name talent to create alternate programming, while offering subscribers an array of documentaries and original series from its library. But the network was a bust and was folded after just a month. CNN Worldwide CEO Mark Thompson announced plans for the streaming service in January. He wrote to employees that they 'plan to develop a new way for digital subscribers at home and abroad to stream news programming from us on any device they choose. It's early days but we've already established that there's immense demand for it not just in America but across much of the world.' CNN already has a streaming presence on Max, launched after the failure of CNN+, that mirrors a significant share of linear content. But in his memo in January, Thompson wrote that they will 'continue to have a strong presence on Max, but we also believe it is not a complete answer to the future of the great linear CNN experience.' CNN also has started a paywall for following an upgrade. According to The New York Times, which first reported on the launch plans, the streaming service would be tied to the subscription product. Existing linear cable subscribers also will have access. One of the difficulties for news networks in offering streaming options are agreements with traditional TV distributors, even as cable and satellite subscriptions are on the decline. Fox News launched a subscription offering, Fox Nation, in 2018, and it offers a mix of original content, including entertainment programming, along with on-demand streams of some of its linear programming. MSNBC has a streaming presence on Peacock, the NBCU subscription service, and it is unclear what kind of offering it will have following its separation from parent Comcast later this year. CNN Hires Chief Content Officer Amid Digital Rebuild
As it looks to reshape itself for a post-TV future, CNN has rehired a familiar name in a new C-suite role. Amanda Wills, who departed the cable news brand in 2022 for The Wall Street Journal after a six-year run, has rejoined CNN as chief content officer, the company said on Monday. As News Industry Faces Existential Questions Max Pulls CNN and Sports From Ad Tier in Streaming Pivot The executive will work with the product team as it plans out its content strategy across TV, digital and streaming platforms and will report to Virginia Moseley, the executive editor of editorial. Wills' start date will be April 14. At the Journal, Wills held a similar title, chief content officer of video, overseeing the vertical for the News Corp. broadsheet since November 2022. While at CNN, Wills also worked on the short-lived foray into a subscription digital product, CNN+, as vp of content programming for the $300 million service that was scrapped after less than a month in between a sale of its parent company from AT&T to Discovery. That Jeff Zucker-era product — which had original shows, like Jake Tapper's Book Club, separate from CNN's main feed — was intended as a bridge between its main feed and its streaming future. Another veteran from CNN+, Nancy Han, also just rejoined the cable news outlet as svp, video editorial in March. Both hires were made after the company rehired Alex MacCallum, the general manager of CNN+ and The New York Times product veteran, last year as CNN aims to make a major push into digital subscriptions. After widely expected cuts were made in January — about 6 percent of jobs, or 200 people — the cable news brand has been reorienting toward building products outside of its core linear TV offering. CEO Mark Thompson said at the time of the layoffs that about 100 roles would be filled and that parent company Warner Bros. Discovery would be making a $70 million investment in the brand to 'execute new plans.' Those plans include a new streaming service, details yet-to-be-revealed, 'to stream news programming from us on any device they choose,' Thompson described in January. And they also include a lifestyle-oriented digital product as well as new television schedule — Jake Tapper, Wolf Blitzer and Audie Cornish all got new time slots while Jim Acosta exited — and an integration of digital, TV and international newsrooms from their previous silos. CNN, which streams on Max, has been testing the waters for a digital subscription product and currently offers pricing plans of $3.99 monthly or $29.99 a year, with subscriber benefits being premium articles and documentaries on its website. In late February, Max unveiled a plan to cut news and sports from its offerings on its cheaper advertising tier, and placed CNN Max on its $16.99 a month plan that also includes B/R Sports starting on March 30.
