CNN Hires Chief Content Officer Amid Digital Rebuild

As it looks to reshape itself for a post-TV future, CNN has rehired a familiar name in a new C-suite role.
Amanda Wills, who departed the cable news brand in 2022 for The Wall Street Journal after a six-year run, has rejoined CNN as chief content officer, the company said on Monday.

The executive will work with the product team as it plans out its content strategy across TV, digital and streaming platforms and will report to Virginia Moseley, the executive editor of editorial. Wills' start date will be April 14.
At the Journal, Wills held a similar title, chief content officer of video, overseeing the vertical for the News Corp. broadsheet since November 2022.
While at CNN, Wills also worked on the short-lived foray into a subscription digital product, CNN+, as vp of content programming for the $300 million service that was scrapped after less than a month in between a sale of its parent company from AT&T to Discovery.
That Jeff Zucker-era product — which had original shows, like Jake Tapper's Book Club, separate from CNN's main feed — was intended as a bridge between its main feed and its streaming future. Another veteran from CNN+, Nancy Han, also just rejoined the cable news outlet as svp, video editorial in March.
Both hires were made after the company rehired Alex MacCallum, the general manager of CNN+ and The New York Times product veteran, last year as CNN aims to make a major push into digital subscriptions.
After widely expected cuts were made in January — about 6 percent of jobs, or 200 people — the cable news brand has been reorienting toward building products outside of its core linear TV offering. CEO Mark Thompson said at the time of the layoffs that about 100 roles would be filled and that parent company Warner Bros. Discovery would be making a $70 million investment in the brand to 'execute new plans.'
Those plans include a new streaming service, details yet-to-be-revealed, 'to stream news programming from us on any device they choose,' Thompson described in January. And they also include a lifestyle-oriented digital product as well as new television schedule — Jake Tapper, Wolf Blitzer and Audie Cornish all got new time slots while Jim Acosta exited — and an integration of digital, TV and international newsrooms from their previous silos.
CNN, which streams on Max, has been testing the waters for a digital subscription product and currently offers pricing plans of $3.99 monthly or $29.99 a year, with subscriber benefits being premium articles and documentaries on its website. In late February, Max unveiled a plan to cut news and sports from its offerings on its cheaper advertising tier, and placed CNN Max on its $16.99 a month plan that also includes B/R Sports starting on March 30.

Global economic growth is on track for its weakest decade since the 1960s, according to a new analysis by the World Bank, which cites President Donald Trump's trade war as a major factor weighing on economies worldwide. The World Bank expects Trump's barrage of new tariffs on America's trading partners to whittle down global economic growth to its lowest level since the 2008 financial crisis when discounting worldwide recessions, according to a report released Tuesday. While the Washington, DC-based institution does not expect another global recession due to the tariffs, it said in a press release that — should its projections for global growth come to pass this year and next — 'average global growth in the first seven years of the 2020s will be the slowest of any decade since the 1960s.' In its report, the World Bank downgraded its expectation for global GDP growth this year to 2.3% from the 2.7% it had forecast in January. That's based on the assumption that tariffs worldwide will remain at their late-May levels. That puts the world economy on course for its weakest pace of growth in 17 years, excluding two global recessions — the first in 2009, following the financial crisis; and the second in 2020, the first year of the coronavirus pandemic. Those years saw global economic growth contract by 1.3% and 2.9%, respectively, according to World Bank data. 'The sharp increase in tariffs and the ensuing uncertainty are contributing to a broad-based growth slowdown and deteriorating prospects in most of the world's economies,' the institution said in the report. It added that the 'turmoil' unleashed by 'heightened trade tensions' had prompted it to cut its growth forecasts for almost 70% of economies worldwide — across all regions and income groups. The anticipated slowdown in developing economies will also be influenced by long-running trends such as ballooning government debt levels, the institution noted. Since retaking office in January, Trump has hiked import duties on most of America's trading partners and on key goods, including cars and steel. A round of punishingly high 'reciprocal tariffs' is set to whack many of America's trading partners from July 9 unless they can strike a deal with Washington — and despite the levies hitting a legal stumbling block last month. Fresh trade negotiations between the United States and China kicked off in London on Monday, and continued on Tuesday, with both sides attempting to preserve a fragile truce brokered last month. Despite ongoing talks, the tariffs, their erratic implementation and the unpredictability that both have injected into the global economy, are weighing on many businesses and consumers. The irreverent series about a mad scientist and his grandson's adventures across the universe premiered in May on Adult Swim. New episodes are dropping weekly through July 27. The series, which stars Ian Cardoni, Harry Belden, Sarah Chalke, Chris Parnell, and Spencer Grammer will also be airing in over 170 countries, so whether you're in the U.S. or abroad, here's everything you need to know about how to watch Rick and Morty Season 8, including where to stream it and how to watch it with the help of a VPN if you don't have cable. Season 8 of Rick and Morty premiered on Sunday, May 25. The series won't land on streaming in the U.S. until after the entire season wraps up — so if you're used to watching Rick and Morty on HBO Max, heads up that you'll have to wait until Sept. 1 to catch Season 8. A sculpture by French artist Auguste Rodin that had disappeared from public view for almost 120 years and was thought to be a copy has sold for 860,000 euros ($984,000) at auction. 'Le Désespoir,' which shows a female figure sat on a rock holding one foot with her knee hugged to her chest, was rediscovered at the end of 2024 after last being sold in 1906, said auction house Rouillac in a statement on Sunday. Rodin, who lived from 1840-1917, made several versions of 'Le Désespoir.' This particular sculpture was modelled in 1890 and sculpted from marble in 1892-93. Measuring just 28.5 centimeters (11.2 inches) by 15 centimeters (5.9 inches) by 25 centimeters (9.8 inches), the sculpture was originally modelled to form part of Rodin's monumental work 'The Gates of Hell,' which features more than 200 figures and groups. The previous owners – a family from central France – had no idea of its value and had displayed the sculpture on top of a piano alongside family photos, auctioneer Aymeric Rouillac told CNN on Tuesday. 'They said 'it's a fake, it's a copy,'' Rouillac said, but he decided to investigate further. The details of this sculpture are striking, Rouillac told CNN. 'The back, the muscles, they are perfect,' he said. 'You can feel every vertebra in the spinal column.' Following his own initial investigation, Rouillac took the sculpture for assessment by the Comité Rodin, which maintains a catalogue of the artist's work. On Tuesday, Jérôme Le Blay, co-founder of the Comité Rodin, told CNN that he was immediately struck by the 'exceptional' piece. 'I realized in a second that it was real,' he said. 'I had absolutely no doubt.' This particular example is 'extremely well made,' said Le Blay, adding that it dates back to a period when Rodin was dedicating a huge amount of time to making a small number of sculptures. Rodin would have worked with assistants who would have carried out the initial work on a piece of marble, before he performed the final stages, he explained. According to Le Blay, the sculpture dates to 'one of the best moments of Rodin's career,' before his growing fame meant that he started to produce more and more works after the turn of the century. Upon his death, Rodin left his works to the Musée Rodin in Paris, as well as granting it permission to continue producing his bronze sculptures. While many of these posthumous bronzes go under the hammer each year, marbles are much harder to find, said Le Blay. Most of Rodin's marbles are owned by the Musée Rodin or by other large museums around the world, he said. 'Marbles in private collections are rare,' he said, adding that this piece has a 'kind of magic' due to the fact that it has reappeared for sale after such a long time. Following a 'passionate' auction, the winning bid was made by a young banker from the US West Coast, according to the auction house.
