ECB PREVIEW: rates unchanged as tariff deadline approaches

Mid East Info22-07-2025
By Daniela Sabin Hathorn, senior market analyst at Capital.com
As the European Central Bank ECB prepares for its upcoming policy meeting on Thursday, expectations are low for any fresh policy action. Having led its global peers in the early stages of the rate-cutting cycle, the ECB now appears ready to pause, adopting a more cautious, data-dependent stance amid global uncertainty and fragile growth dynamics.
Early Mover, Now Steady Hand:
The ECB has shown confidence in front-running rate cuts compared to other major central banks like the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England. That decisiveness appears to have paid off. Inflation in the eurozone, though fluctuating slightly in recent months, remains broadly stable around the 2% target. Meanwhile, the bloc has managed to bounce back from a string of disappointing growth prints last year, signalling that policy support has helped stabilize the region's recovery.
With the deposit rate currently at 2%, ECB policymakers have repeatedly signalled they are in a comfortable place. There is little urgency to deliver additional cuts unless a new shock materializes. As President Christine Lagarde has suggested in recent remarks, the central bank is in 'wait and see' mode—a sentiment expected to dominate Thursday's meeting.
Tariff Risks Loom Large:
If there is one external risk that could prompt a policy rethink, it's the growing threat of a trade standoff between the U.S. and EU. As the August 1st deadline for a decision on new tariffs approaches, speculation is mounting that the U.S. may impose 30% levies on certain European goods—well above the 20% worst-case scenario previously modelled by the ECB.
While such a move is still not a given, it would be a significant escalation in trade tensions and could deliver a sizable hit to eurozone growth. In that scenario, further monetary easing might be back on the table. However, with the ECB meeting set before the tariff deadline and no substantial progress in negotiations yet, policymakers are unlikely to pre-emptively react. This points to a muted, possibly uneventful meeting, with no change in policy but a reiteration of the ECB's readiness to act if conditions deteriorate.
Inflation Watch and Communication Strategy:
Even with subdued expectations, markets will parse every word from Lagarde carefully. The ECB will likely reaffirm its dual commitment: supporting the recovery while remaining vigilant against inflationary risks. That balancing act is increasingly important, especially if tariffs start pushing up prices through supply chain disruptions and cost pass-through effects.
The message is likely to be measured—acknowledging risks without sounding alarmist. For markets, that may come across as a 'boring' meeting, but in the current climate of uncertainty, predictability could be just what investors need.
EUR/USD Outlook: Seeking Direction
From a market perspective, the euro has struggled in recent days amid renewed U.S. dollar strength. However, technical indicators suggest a potential base is forming. Support appears to be building around key moving averages, and with the dollar showing signs of fatigue, this week's ECB meeting could mark a turning point for euro bulls—assuming the central bank sticks to its current supportive stance and no new surprises arise.
A sustained move above 1.18 in EUR/USD would confirm the bullish trend that has been in place since early 2025. Conversely, a drop below the 1.16 level would undermine the upward momentum and raise questions about market conviction. However, unless the ECB introduces new dovish elements, the bias remains for consolidation or mild upside, especially if global risk sentiment stabilizes.
EUR/USD daily chart:
Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
Conclusion: A Pause with a Watchful Eye
This week's ECB meeting is unlikely to deliver fireworks. But in a macro environment clouded by trade threats and lingering inflation concerns, stability might be the central bank's most powerful message. Barring a major tariff shock, the ECB is poised to hold rates steady, reinforce its 'wait and see' stance, and leave the door open for action—if and only if the data demands it.

Eurozone CPI holds steady, reinforcing ECB's wait-and-see approach - Middle East Business News and Information

By Daniela Sabin Hathorn, senior market analyst at The preliminary July reading of Eurozone inflation showed no change in both headline and core CPI, which remained at 2.0% and 2.3% year-over-year, respectively. Markets had been expecting a slight dip in headline inflation to 1.9%, but month-on-month figures suggest price pressures continue to ease, hinting at softer inflation prints ahead if the trend persists. Policy implications: ECB can afford to stay put: The European Central Bank (ECB) appears to be achieving a delicate balance between supporting growth and containing inflation. With the headline CPI exactly at the ECB's 2% target, policymakers are likely comfortable with current conditions. While the risk of undershooting inflation targets cannot be dismissed entirely, the ECB's easing cycle seems to have reached a pause, with no further rate cuts expected through at least the end of 2026. At this point, only a severe and unexpected shock to growth would likely prompt the ECB to cut further, and with most of the tariff uncertainty between the US and the EU now resolved, it is unlikely that such thing will happen anytime soon. For now, the ECB is likely to remain data-dependant, especially as it monitors how the new tariff levels impact growth in different European economies. Market reaction: As for markets, the CPI released hasn't done much to change the sluggish sentiment in European assets. Equity indices are facing increased selling pressure on Friday morning as global sentiment sours on the day that Trump's tariff extension deadline comes to an end, with several countries facing higher tariffs in the absence of a deal. Whilst this isn't the case for the EU, the bullish momentum that was powering equities over the past few weeks seems to have dried up somewhat, leading to a reversal in global equities. Meanwhile, EUR/USD is attempting to find some footing after facing heavy losses this week, primarily on the back of a continued resurgence in the US dollar. Whilst other USD pairs are facing further bearish pressure on Friday, EUR/USD is holding on to the 1.14 mark for the third consecutive session, potentially finding some strength in the CPI data release. However, with the RSI nearing oversold levels and continued upside expected in the dollar, the support is unlikely to hold much longer, with the 100-day SMA at 1.1360 likely to be the next test. SCZone Chief Lays Foundation for Two New Chinese Textile Projects Worth $55 Million

Taarek Refaat Walid Gamal El-Din, Chairman of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) witnessed the groundbreaking ceremony for two new Chinese textile projects in the industrial developer 'TEDA–Egypt' zone in Ain Sokhna, marking a fresh wave of foreign investment into Egypt's manufacturing sector. The projects, with combined investments exceeding $55 million, are set to create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, while strengthening Egypt's presence in global textile supply chains. The first project, led by Bridge-Tex, involves the construction of a fully integrated textile complex on a 40,000-square-meter plot. With an investment of over $25 million, the facility will house 18 spinning lines, more than 100 fabric production lines, and six printing and dyeing lines. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to produce 25 million meters of high-quality fabrics and 105,000 tons of fibers annually, generating around 500 direct jobs and 1,000 indirect jobs. The second project, developed by F-TEX International, will be built on 55,000 square meters with 60 production lines for drawn textured polyester yarn (DTY). The $30 million facility is projected to reach full operational capacity by late 2027, with an annual production target of 130,000 tons and 400 direct jobs, contributing an estimated $150 million in annual export revenues. Gamal El-Din emphasized that these projects reflect growing international investor confidence in the SCZONE and the success of the partnership with TEDA–Egypt. He highlighted ongoing talks with Chinese partners to allocate an additional 10 km² for industrial development, following the near-completion of earlier expansion phases. 'These projects will not only add significant value to the local economy and create jobs, but also enhance Egypt's industrial integration and global supply chain competitiveness,' Gamal El-Din said, noting that SCZONE attracted $8.6 billion in investments across 297 projects over the past three years, including $4.4 billion in the last fiscal year alone. Representatives from both companies highlighted the export-oriented nature of the projects, with 80% of output destined for U.S. and European markets. Bridge-Tex expects annual sales of $120 million, with $100 million in foreign currency inflows, while F-TEX executives framed the project as a symbol of Sino-Egyptian textile cooperation, combining Chinese technology with Egyptian labor to achieve sustainable growth. The two projects are expected to boost Egypt's textile exports, potentially helping the country surpass $10 billion in annual textile export revenues, according to company statements. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

US labour data could give more context to a stronger-than-expected GDP in Q2 - Middle East Business News and Information

By Daniela Sabin Hathorn, senior market analyst at The July U.S. Non-Farm Payrolls report due on Friday is expected to show a further cooling in the labour market. Expectations are for an increase of around 110,000 jobs, down from 147,000 in June. This would reflect a broader trend of decelerating job growth, consistent with the Federal Reserve's goal of achieving a more balanced labour market. Some analysts expect even softer gains—closer to 95,000—citing a slowdown in government hiring. Meanwhile, ADP's private payrolls data beat expectations with a 104,000 increase and, even though the correlation between both is usually weak, it could suggest the official report could land close to consensus. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate is forecast to tick slightly higher to 4.2%, up from 4.1% last month. Average hourly earnings are expected to rise modestly, with annual wage growth anticipated at around 3.9%. Wage data will be closely watched, as strong wage growth could signal persistent inflationary pressures, while softer wage gains would reinforce the narrative of a cooling economy. Beyond the headline numbers, structural labour constraints remain in focus. Factors such as declining immigration and an aging workforce are contributing to a slower expansion of the labour force. These supply-side constraints could put upward pressure on wages and limit long-term job growth even if demand remains steady. This labour data holds significant implications for the Federal Reserve's monetary policy. While most Fed officials currently expect to keep rates steady through the end of 2025, a notably weak jobs report could increase pressure on the Fed to begin cutting rates sooner. Conversely, a stronger-than-expected print could delay those expectations and support the U.S. dollar and bond yields. Reassessing the Q2 GDP surprise: It is also important to factor in the GDP data released on Wednesday. In the second quarter, the US economy grew at an annualized rate of 3.0%, rebounding sharply from a 0.5% contraction in Q1 and beating expectations. However, looking closer at the data we can see that this rebound was heavily driven by a decline in imports—which subtract from GDP—rather than strong domestic demand. Ultimately, the headline 3% figure as partly a mechanical swing tied to tariff-related front loading in Q1. Stripping out trade and inventory effects, underlying domestic activity appears much weaker. The tariff-driven buying frenzies in the beginning of the year have made it difficult to assess the underlying health and direction of the world's largest economy. Businesses drawing from inventories rather than importing new goods gave GDP an artificial boost, obscuring weaker consumer and business spending fundamentals. The strong—but contextually mixed—Q2 GDP print underscores a critical dynamic: the economy is showing signs of resilience, but the strength is uneven and likely to fade if structural weak points persist. Friday's July Non‑Farm Payrolls (NFP) will thus be a key test: it could help clarify whether labour market momentum remains robust enough to support actual demand growth. A soft NFP print, such as around 100,000 new jobs or less, would align with the subdued consumption and investment trends seen in GDP. Conversely, a stronger-than-expected jobs report (above 150k) would suggest the labour market remains firmer than top-line GDP implies and could sustain consumer spending despite broader headwinds. Additionally, wage growth and participation metrics in the NFP report will provide insight into domestic demand strength that the headline GDP number struggled to capture. As for markets, the bullish momentum seems to remain strong in US equities, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 continuously pushing to new highs. The strong GDP data seems to have bolstered sentiment heading into the NFP reading, but S&P 500 traders should watch out for a possible RSI divergence emerging on the daily chart. As the price pushes to new highs, the RSI has failed to mark a new high since the beginning of July. If the index is unable to follow the price and break above 76.75 then buyers may be in for some weakness ahead, with a possible technical correction on the horizon. S&P 500 daily chart: Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
