Asian markets waver to start key week for trade, US data
HONG KONG : Asian markets mostly rose today as investors eyed a week dominated by speculation about US inflation data and a prolonged pause for Washington's tariffs on China.
Observers expect Donald Trump to announce an extension of a trade war truce reached with China last month, ahead of a 90-day deadline due to expire tomorrow.
Meanwhile, a key US consumer price index report is set up for tomorrow and could shape future policy decisions by the Federal Reserve, which has come under increasing pressure from the president to cut rates.
Investors have ramped up their bets on the central bank lowering borrowing costs at its next meeting in September, following a series of reports – particularly on jobs – indicating the world's number one economy was slowing.
Also in view is a high-stakes summit between Trump and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Friday in Alaska, which could pave the way for a deal to resolve the Ukraine war that involves an easing of tough sanctions on Moscow.
In early trade, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sydney, Seoul, Wellington, Taipei and Jakarta all rose though there were losses in Singapore and Manila. Tokyo was closed for a public holiday.
With tomorrow's US-China tariff truce deadline looming, investors are bullish about the prospects of another extension.
'The market has fully subscribed to the high probability of the tariff truce being rolled over for another 90 days' said Chris Weston of Pepperstone.
'As such, unless diplomatic talks fully break down, news of extension shouldn't move markets too intently,' he added.
Gold futures edged down after hitting a record high Friday following reports of an unexpected tariff on the precious metal.
Despite protracted uncertainty about trade, investors remain optimistic about artificial intelligence (AI) – an area of fierce competition between Beijing and Washington.
Reports today said that US chip giants Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) had agreed to pay Washington 15% of their revenue from selling AI chips to China.
Investors are betting that AI will transform the global economy, and last month Nvidia – the world's leading semiconductor producer – became the first company ever to hit US$4 trillion in market value.

Sea's sales top estimates as online shoppers keep spending
Shopee's second-quarter revenue rose 34% to US$3.8 billion. (Reuters pic) SINGAPORE : Sea Ltd's second-quarter sales beat analysts' estimates as more of Southeast Asia's consumers turn to online shopping for anything from iPhones to daily groceries. Revenue rose 38% to a record US$5.26 billion in the three months through June, the company said in a statement. Analysts estimated US$5 billion on average. Net income jumped to US$414.2 million from US$79.9 million a year earlier, but fell short of the US$444 million analysts predicted. Sea's American depositary receipts jumped as much as 20% after markets opened in New York today, their biggest intraday gain in nine months. The results assuage some concerns about the prospects of e-commerce arm Shopee. The region's top online retail platform is battling deep-pocketed global challengers including ByteDance Ltd's TikTok Shop and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd's Lazada. Emerging players like Shein and PDD Holdings Inc's Temu are also looking to break into the emerging region of 675 million people where more and more shoppers are coming online. To boost its bottom line, Shopee has been steadily raising the commissions it charges merchants in various core markets by about a third since the start of last year. The hikes, which bring Shopee's fees above its rivals, show that Sea is confident it can attract and retain merchants, helped by a broad user base and well-established delivery services. Shopee's second-quarter revenue rose 34% to US$3.8 billion, thanks in part to surging commissions and ad revenue. Sea is also betting on new initiatives from digital finance to logistics to grow its dominance and convince investors of its growth potential. Its logistics arm SPX Express now handles the majority of Shopee's billions of parcels annually, while its finance arm – now known as Monee – increased sales 70% last quarter to US$882.8 million. Bookings at gaming division Garena rose 23%. 'In the past, cash flow from Sea's gaming arm Garena was used to grow Shopee and Monee, but now Shopee and Monee are in healthier capital positions,' Hussaini Saifee, an analyst at Maybank Securities, said before the results. 'Sea can now invest in further developing Garena which has also made a strong rebound over the last year and a half.'

US tariffs could hit Samsung phones, exempt China-made iPhones
Visitors at the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event experience the Galaxy Z Fold7 smartphone at the Duggal Greenhouse in New York on July 9. - Photo: Samsung Electronics SEOUL: Samsung Electronics could face higher US tariffs on its smartphones and other finished electronics as early as this week, even as Apple's iPhones made primarily in China may be granted exemptions, industry sources said Tuesday (Aug 12). This would highlight a notable divergence in how major smartphone makers are treated under Washington's trade measures aimed at protecting US manufacturing and reducing reliance on Chinese supply chains. Industry officials said the US President Donald Trump's administration is considering tariffs of up to 25 percent on smartphones, laptops, monitors and other semiconductor-related finished goods. If applied at that rate, the base model of Samsung's Galaxy S25, currently priced at US$799.99, could rise by nearly US$200, while next year's Galaxy S26 series could see a 30-40 percent increase. Such a move could weaken Samsung's recent gains in the US market. The Korean tech giant held a 31 percent share in the second quarter, narrowing the gap with Apple to 18 percentage points from 33 percentage points a year earlier, according to Canalys. Apple, however, appears better positioned to secure tariff exemptions despite manufacturing about 90 percent of its iPhones in China, with the remaining 10 percent shared equally between Vietnam and India. The company recently pledged to invest $600 billion in new US production facilities over the next four years, creating 20,000 jobs and strengthening domestic supply chains — a plan developed in coordination with Washington. President Trump has signaled support for Apple's expansion, raising expectations that the company could be spared from the proposed tariffs. 'Apple's preemptive investment announcement appears to have been made with potential smartphone tariffs in mind,' said Kim Rok-ho, an analyst at Hana Securities. 'Even if semiconductors are exempted from tariffs, if devices like smartphones and PCs are included, Korean products will inevitably be at a disadvantage against Apple in the US market.' Samsung manufactures about 50-60 percent of its smartphones in Vietnam, with the rest produced in India, Korea and South America. It stopped handset production in China in 2019 after losing market share there. '(The US Department of Commerce) investigation is wide ranging from semiconductors to finished goods such as smartphones, tablets, PCs and monitors,' Samsung CFO Park Soon-cheol said in July. 'We expect the impact on our business to be significant.' A Samsung official said the company is 'closely monitoring' developments, noting that while price increases after product launches are unprecedented, they may be considered in 'special cases like tariffs.' According to an industry source familiar with Samsung's operations, "The firm is exploring options such as large-scale US investments or relocating some production to America," but "high labour costs and operational challenges remain a major concern," he added. - The Korea Herald/ANN
