Rain, cooler weather helping to contain wildfire burning on Vancouver Island
The roughly 538-hectare Wesley Ridge fire has forced those living in almost 390 homes in the Regional District of Nanaimo to flee. Another 250 properties are on evacuation alert, meaning they must be ready to leave at a moment's notice.
The B.C. Wildfire Service said crews made good progress on Tuesday in improving the containment of the blaze, guarding it from spreading to nearby homes and the Highway 4 corridor, which connects the island's east and west coasts.
The wildfire service said light rain fell on the fire Tuesday, allowing firefighters to "expand containment," and night-vision helicopters were set to work the fire's perimeter overnight.
Officials said fire behaviour has been limited to "a low-vigour surface fire," but some spots have seen a higher burning intensity.
There are about 130 active wildfires burning across B.C. as of Wednesday morning, driven largely by hot and dry weather and tens of thousands of lightning strikes.
Some residents have expressed concern that the Wesley Ridge fire could reach Cathedral Grove in MacMillan Park, a nearby temperate rainforest containing trees that have stood for 800 years, but the wildfire service says it is not under threat.

Edmonton weather: Cool, cloudy and wet
According to CTV Edmonton's Cory Edel's forecast, the rain and wind will clear out by tomorrow. Daytime highs have been in the 20s for all of the first twelve days of August. But, that streak is about to end. Afternoon highs will be in the 16 to 19 C range today, tomorrow and Friday. Temperatures should return to the low to mid 20s through the weekend and next week. But, we're kicking off a short cool spell today. There were a few scattered showers in the Edmonton region early this morning and we'll get some steadier rain starting mid-morning and that should stick around for a few hours. We'll stay cloudy through the afternoon, but the precipitation should 'back off' to occasional showers. That heavier, steadier rain will move off into eastern Alberta this afternoon. There might be a few embedded thunderstorms in the Edmonton region at some point today. But, it's mainly east-central Alberta that we'll be keeping an eye on for the potential for severe thunderstorms. Areas from around Drumheller northeast towards Lloydminster/Wainwright could see storms with torrential downpours, large hail, damaging wind gusts and there's a tornado risk, as well. The low-pressure system making it's way across the province today should exit off to the east by Thursday. We'll probably still see some showers in northeastern Alberta Thursday and maybe even a few scattered showers early in the day for the Edmonton region. But, skies should be clearing through the afternoon. We won't stay sunny for long, though. We'll get a few more waves of showers sweeping across the province late Friday and again late Saturday. Here's the forecast for Edmonton and area: Today - Cloudy with periods of rain this morning. Cloudy with a 60% chance of some showers this afternoon. Wind becoming NW 20 gusting to 40 km/h this afternoon. High: 17 Tonight - 60% chance of a shower or thunderstorm this evening and/or overnight. Breezy. 9pm: 14 Thursday - 30% chance of a shower in the morning. Partly cloudy in the afternoon. Wind: NW 20 gusting to 40 km/h Morning Low: 11 Afternoon High: 18 Friday - Increasing cloud. 60% chance of late-day showers. Morning Low: 8 Afternoon High: 18 Saturday - Mix of sun & cloud. 40% chance of evening showers. Morning Low: 10 Afternoon High: 22 Sunday - Partly cloudy. Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for much of Quebec following severe heat
A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for a large area of the province, incuding Montreal, Quebec City, the Eastern Townships, the Lower St. Lawrence region northern Quebec. This comes several days after Environment Canada issued a heat warning, which is still in effect. The agency says it will likely be last day of intense heat for the areas affected. On Wednesday, Environment Canada said conditions are favourable for a potentially dangerous thunderstorm to develop Wednesday afternoon or early evening. It says the storm could produce strong winds, large hail and heavy rain. There's also a slight risk for a tornado to form. Power outages are possible. Environment Canada says to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. If outdoors, protect yourself from hair and flying debris.
