He said the investment by SBH Kibing Solar New Materials (M) Sdn Bhd not only promises an increase in job opportunities but also activates the involvement of over 600 locals, who now serve as suppliers and contractors or subcontractors at the factory. 'This is clear evidence of how foreign investment can have a direct impact on the people of the State, not only through employment but also through a broader economic chain,' he said. He said the great success was achieved in just two years since the factory began operations. Phoong said if the third production line is successfully realised, the total investment value will exceed RM3 billion. 'This is not just a number, but an opportunity and a bright future for the people of Sabah.' Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali described the success of foreign investments like Kibing as concrete proof of Sabah's ability to develop inclusively, not only economically but also in promoting the welfare of the people. 'When we talk about the cost of living, we cannot just look at the prices of goods alone. What is important is income generation and the creation of job opportunities,' he said, adding that every job opportunity created contributes to the household income of the people of Sabah. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Indonesia scraps plan to send delegation to US for tariff talks; Prabowo and Trump hold phone meeting

JAKARTA (Bloomberg): Indonesia will no longer send a delegation to the US for tariff negotiations as its proposal to Washington has already been deemed sufficient, according to the senior minister who's leading the talks. It's a change from the delegation's previous plans to head to Washington this week for a second round of negotiations, as the South-East Asian nation works to bring down a planned 32% tariff on its exports to the US. The progress also comes just hours after Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and US President Donald Trump held a nearly 15-minute phone call to talk about strengthening ties between the two countries. Indonesia has submitted all necessary documents and will now just await the decision from Washington, Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto said in a briefing on Friday. The US Trade Representative told Indonesian officials in a meeting on Thursday that their documentation was considered complete, Hartarto separately told reporters on Friday, according to a report by CNN Indonesia. It highlights the global rush to strike a deal with the US as the 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs is set to end on July 9. South-East Asia has been one of the hardest-hit regions, with higher-than-expected levies seen to undermine their export and manufacturing sectors that have been crucial to driving economic growth. Vietnamese officials are in the US for a third round of official negotiations, while Malaysia's delegation is headed for Washington next week. Thailand is expecting to conduct talks virtually but is waiting for an exact date. Likely bolstering Indonesia's confidence in the negotiations is a call between Trump and Prabowo late Thursday. The leaders gave updates on recent developments in their countries and agreed to continue boosting cooperation, Indonesia's cabinet secretariat said in an Instagram post on Friday. They also reaffirmed their support for efforts to maintain global stability and peace, it said. As part of the trade negotiations, Indonesia will offer a list of preferential tariffs on some US goods, Hartarto said last week. It could also import more US fuel, lower local content requirements and increase access to its critical minerals, the minister had said earlier. State-run oil giant PT Pertamina will shift some of its crude imports from other countries to the US, President Director Simon Aloysius Mantiri said in a separate briefing on Friday. The company is calculating prices, shipping times and volumes of imports, including for LPG, to increase transactions with the US, he said. --With assistance from Grace Sihombing and Eko Listiyorini. -- ©2025 Bloomberg L.P.

Sabah records RM10.9 billion in investments in Q1 2025, ranks third nationally

Phoong speaking at the press conference. KOTA KINABALU (June 13): Sabah recorded a total of RM10.9 billion in approved investments in the first quarter of this year, surpassing the state's total investment figure for the entire year of 2024. According to the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), the investment performance from January to March places Sabah third nationally, behind Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. State Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe said Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) was the main contributor, accounting for RM6.6 billion or 61 percent of the total, while Domestic Direct Investment (DDI) amounted to RM4.29 billion or 39 percent. The manufacturing sector was the top performer, recording RM7.3 billion in investments — the highest among all states for this quarter. Of this, RM6.59 billion or 91.3 percent came from foreign investors, with the remaining RM711 million or 9.7 percent from domestic sources. The services sector followed with RM2.83 billion, while the primary sector attracted RM757.1 million. Phoong said the figures reflected continued investor confidence in Sabah's economic growth potential and its conducive business ecosystem. 'Despite global economic uncertainties and geopolitical pressures, Sabah remains a competitive investment destination trusted by both foreign and domestic investors,' he said at a press conference at Wisma Kewangan today. He added that the success was due to investor-friendly policies and the state government's strong commitment to stimulating industrial development. 'The state government is committed to strengthening the investment ecosystem and welcoming more investors to achieve sustainable and inclusive economic development for Sabah,' he said.

Sipitang steel plant to show progress by July

Phoong KOTA KINABALU (June 13): Esteel Enterprise's RM31 billion steel processing plant at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (SOGIP) is expected to show visible physical progress by July this year. State Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe said the ministry recently received a formal letter from the company reaffirming its commitment to the project. Following the issuance of the Federal Manufacturing License in January 2025, Esteel quickly moved to sign a gas supply agreement with Sabah Energy Corporation and Petronas in February. Phoong said the months of March and April were dedicated to a competitive bidding process to appoint a joint tender (JT) contractor in China. This process concluded with the selection of China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) on May 30. 'This marks the official beginning of the project's implementation phase. Both Esteel and CCCC are confident that by July and August 2025, we will witness substantial transformation at the SOGIP site,' he said. Phoong, who is also Luyang assemblyman, criticised Elopura assemblyman Calvin Chong for politicising the matter and lodging a police report alleging a lack of progress at the site. 'As elected representatives, we can raise such issues during State Assembly sittings. There's no need to resort to police reports. Ask me in DUN — I am ready to answer any question about Esteel,' he said at a press conference at Wisma Kewangan today. 'Don't politicise genuine investors. It deters our efforts to attract more investments and grow the state's industrial sector.' He assured that the green steel manufacturing project will proceed as planned, stressing the strong commitment from both Esteel and the state government. Phoong also highlighted that the project has been thoroughly vetted by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority and the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry. He added that Esteel's parent company, Singapore-based GreenSteel Limited, is a legitimate entity — recently acquiring shares in Penang-based Southern Steel Bhd and already owning Antara Steel in Labuan.
