Five Gators crack The Athletic's top 35 SEC players ahead of 2025 season
Rosters are mostly set with spring practice and the second portal period out of the way. Summer workouts are good to get freshmen on the same page, and fall practice is the dry rehearsal for the real deal, which starts in just about 60 days. So, The Athletic's Manny Navarro broke down the best the SEC has to offer heading into the 2025 season.
Five Florida Gators made the list, which goes up to 35.
Quarterback DJ Lagway and All-American first team center Jake Slaughter are the two obvious selections, but a fifth-year defensive lineman also made his way into the top 25. Each member of the top 25 received a blurb to break down the selection and can be found below.
The Nos. 26-35 players on the list don't have any attached elaboration but are considered "10 others to watch." Offensive tackle Austin Barber (No. 33) and defensive lineman Caleb Banks (No. 35) are in that group.
No. 10 C Jake Slaughter
Slaughter graded out as one of the best overall centers in the game from Week 1 last season. He earned the All-American nod and likely could have gone in the third round or higher in the most recent draft. Instead, he's returning to anchor the first true year of Florida football with DJ Lagway leading the charge. A Gator through and through, there's first-round potential if everything goes right for Slaughter.
"The first-team Associated Press All-American enters his fifth season in Gainesville and is considered by most to be the best center in college football," Navarro said. "He's a big reason Florida allowed 19 fewer sacks last season than it did in 2023 and why the Gators should have one of the top offensive lines in the nation in 2025."
Alabama offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor is the only other offensive lineman ahead of Slaughter on this list.
No. 22 QB DJ Lagway
Perhaps it's surprising to see Lagway at No. 22, but he's still relatively unproven and needs to stay healthy. He could very well end the year at the top of this list, but it's only responsible to keep him in the 20s until a midseason update at the earliest.
"The sophomore from Texas went 6-1 as a starter in 2024, tying Chris Leak for the most wins by a true freshman quarterback at Florida. He completed 59.9 percent of his attempts for 1,915 yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions while rushing 51 times for 101 yards. He missed the spring recovering from shoulder and hamstring injuries."
No. 1 LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina), No. 7 Garrett Nussmeier (LSU), No. 13 John Mateer (Oklahoma) and No. 16 Arch Manning (Texas) are the four quarterbacks ranked ahead of Lagway, making the Florida sophomore the de facto No. 5 signal caller in the SEC.
No. 24 DL Tyreak Sapp
Sapp has championship prestige coming out of South Florida powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas, and he's looking to see the rebuild at Florida through before taking a shot at a pro career. He could have gotten his NFL journey started after last year, but he's another guy who chose to return to Florida instead.
"The fifth-year senior from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., led the Gators with seven sacks and 13 tackles for loss last season and can line up anywhere on the defensive line. Sapp was one of four Florida players who received the Tim Tebow Leadership Award this spring. Jake Slaughter, No. 10 on this list, was another."
No. 33 OT Austin Barber and No. 35 DL Caleb Banks
Barber recently received a first-round mock draft projection from ESPN's Matt Miller, as did Sapp. He struggled at times last season while dealing with some injuries, but he still put up career-best grades as a run blocker and only allowed 13 quarterback pressures. He can be an elite SEC tackle if healthy in 2025.
Banks is another Gator with first-round projections. His stock was highest at the end of last season after he went on a tear, getting into the backfield, but he still enters 2025 as one of the SEC's most intimidating defensive linemen. Banks is primed for a breakout year as the co-leader of Florida's defensive line.

ESPN star slams WNBA players' treatment of Caitlin Clark amid All-Star ranking controversy
ESPN broadcaster Dick Vitale came to the defense of Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark after her WNBA peers voted her as the ninth-best All-Star guard. Clark's ranking was a shock to many across the social media landscape. She was named one of the captains for the All-Star Game and received more than 1.2 million fan votes. The WNBA determined All-Star starters based on fan rank, media rank and player rank. The total weighted score helped determine the starters. The second-year guard was ranked ninth among her fellow All-Stars, "It is ABSURD the way that a # of players in the @WNBA have treated @CaitlinClark22! So sad but I bet they love the CHARTER FLIGHTS -the increase in SALARIES - the CROWDS -the TV Ratings since she arrived from @IowaWBB. No doubt she is THE BEST - thing to happen to the WNBA," he wrote on X. He was far from the only one who voiced his opinion on the issue. One potential reason why Clark's peers ranked her so low among guards is due to playing only nine of the Fever's 16 games this season. Clark has been dealing with injuries in her sophomore season, which continues now as she's missed the last two games. Clark had been struggling lately as well, going just 13-of-47 from three-point territory in her last three games. Still, Clark is averaging 18.2 points, 8.9 assists, five rebounds and 1.6 steals over 33.3 minutes per game this season. Only the Phoenix Mercury's Alyssa Thomas – who could be among the 12 All-Star Game reserves, which will be selected by the league's head coaches and announced this Sunday – has more assists per game (9.3), and she's touched the hardwood in 12 contests this season. While Clark has been integral in the rise of the WNBA's popularity since breaking rookie and league records last season with the Fever, there have been many contentious moments with opponents. All the incidents became the talk of the sports world for a few days. But Clark and Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier will be the ones drafting players to their All-Star squads, and now they know who will be starting with them at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Clark's Fever home, on July 19. Panthers found a way to keep the core together, and Bill Zito says it was player-driven
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Bill Zito looked exhausted. The Florida Panthers' hockey operations president and general manager was trying to schedule a fishing trip. He was trying to figure out how the next few weeks will work. He needed a nap, desperately. The good news: He can finally get a bit of a break. The Panthers are running — skating? — it back next season, with all 12 of the forwards that they used in the clinching game of the Stanley Cup Final under contract for 2025-26 and in many cases long beyond. The final moves came when the signings of Brad Marchand and Tomas Nosek became officially official as Florida prepares to try and win a third consecutive title next season. And with that, Zito and the Panthers pulled off a stunning haul: They went into free agency trying to figure out who among the trio of Sam Bennett, Aaron Ekblad and Marchand could fit under the salary cap for next season — and kept them all. It begged the obvious question: How did he do this? 'I didn't. It was those guys,' Zito said. 'There's no gray area whatsoever. This is 100% those guys wanting to be part of something that they created. We kind of wax poetic about the team and the community that they've become. And I think this is a great example of what it means to them. It's 100% those men who made that decision that they all wanted to continue to try to win together.' Bennett took an eight-year deal worth $64 million, Ekblad took an eight-year deal worth $48.6 million and Marchand took a six-year deal worth about $32 million. And much in the same way that Zito — who has 10 players, most of the team's biggest names, under contract through at least 2030 — didn't want credit, Ekblad deferred the credit for all of this happening as well. 'It speaks a lot about the organization and everything that they do for us and how bad guys want to play here,' Ekblad said. 'Our practice rink, our game rink, the hotels that we stay in on the road, the food that we eat ... the organization does everything for us. It's easy to want to stay here. And then the culture of winning is just a huge draw to guys, right? It's the most important thing. It's why we play the game. And we've all been taken care of extremely well.' Bennett, Ekblad and Marchand all could have commanded more on the open market; the NHL's free agency period opened, or about an hour after Zito met with reporters inside the Panthers' theater at their new practice facility. They chose to stay for less and try to win more. It's a simple formula. 'It was always Florida,' said Ekblad, who is now in position to potentially spend the entirety of what could be a nearly two-decade career with the Panthers. 'I don't think you guys understand. Florida is home now.' Before that nap, Zito had a couple more things to monitor. The Panthers still had a couple pursuits in free agency to tend to, but the core is built and in place for years to come. And that means, when he finally gets to sleep, Zito will sleep well. 'I think they see the players having fun, and enjoying hockey, and they know how hard they work,' Zito said. 'I think they want to be part of that.'

Phillies' Rob Thomson Reveals Andrew Painter Will Be Shut Down for All-Star Break
Phillies' Rob Thomson Reveals Andrew Painter Will Be Shut Down for All-Star Break originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies have one of baseball's best starting rotations. What makes it even better is the fact that multiple starters aren't even pitching yet. Aaron Nola is on the injured list, and the 5th ranked prospect in baseball, Andrew Painter, is still working things out in the Minor Leagues. Advertisement Painter was invited to the MLB Futures Game, but Phillies manager Rob Thomson announced that Painter wouldn't pitch in the game. According to Todd Zolecki of Thomson is sticking to the team's plan to shut Painter down during the All-Star break. Thomson and the Phillies are being extra careful with Painter after his injury, which knocked him out all of 2024. This decision, to keep him shut down during the All-Star break, could also point to a future decision from Thomson. If the Phillies stick to their other plan, which is bringing Painter up sometime in the second half of July, this shut-down period could be a good chance to see how Painter's body reacts to time off. Advertisement The Phillies' rotation is strong, and there isn't much room for Painter at the Major League level. With that in mind, Painter might have to go a decent amount of time between starts. Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson (59) looks on from the dugout against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC LeClaire-Imagn Images Even if he takes over for Mick Abel, Nola is right in line with Painter for his return to the mound for the Phillies. Painter might be looking at a less straightforward call-up to the big leagues, as the Phillies' rotation is too good to break up at the moment. Regardless of when Painter is called up, this plan from Thomson to sit Painter in the Futures game is one to monitor. If Painter reacts well to time off, then there will be more optimism going forward when they eventually bring him up to the Major Leagues. Advertisement Painter is one of baseball's most anticipated MLB debuts waiting to happen. As the Phillies plan to be careful with him, Painter is set to be shut down during the All-Star break and not pitch in the MLB Futures Game.
