Food policing again

Time of India24-07-2025
Ghaziabad: A week after a vigilante group forced a KFC outlet in Vasundhara to serve vegetarian items in the month of Shravan, another incident of food policing has emerged in the city.
The latest incident, far more intrusive, came to light after a video of it was shared widely on social media. The 2.5-minute clip purportedly shows two Bajrang Dal members intercepting a Blinkit rider who was out to deliver an order in Vijay Nagar. The men ask the rider for his name and then direct him to show the items he is delivering. As the rider complies, the men spot a non-vegetarian item in the order.
"You are a Hindu, and you're doing (delivering a non-veg item) this – aren't you ashamed?" the "Bajrang" member in the video says to the rider.
He then goes on to tell the rider to call the customer and talk to her. With the call on speaker phone, the video shows the vigilante "advising" the customer not to eat non-vegetarian food during Sawan. It is only after the customer identifies her religion as Christian that the vigilante in the video allows the rider to proceed with the delivery.

Asked about the video, a Bajrang Dal member in Ghaziabad, Subhash, told TOI that the man in the video is a member of the outfit. The incident, Subhash said, occurred on Tuesday.
"We have requested all restaurants and grocery stores not to sell non-vegetarian food till
Shivratri
. Whenever we found any person selling non-veg food, we reached there and asked them to sell only vegetarian items. The restriction is for some days only, and people of the district also support this initiative," Subhash said.
Kotwali ACP Ritesh Tripathi said the incident took place in Vijay Nagar and a team has been formed to investigate the matter. "We have not received any complaint over the incident till now," the ACP said.
Multiple such incidents have been reported in NCR since preparations for kanwar yatra, which is observed during Shravan, began earlier this month.
Last week, members of the Hindu Raksha Dal protested in front of a KFC outlet and Nazeer restaurant in Sector 11 of Vasundhara.
The KFC outlet gave in to the outfit's intimidation and put up a notice, saying: "We are serving only veg." Ghaziabad police finally intervened and assured the outlet that there's no such restriction.
A senior police officer iterated on Wednesday that there was no curb on selling non-vegetarian food items. "Stores are selling non-veg items, and police have assured them help," the officer added.
Blinkit did not respond to requests for comment on the video and the incident till Wednesday evening.
The matter also reached the Supreme Court, which on Tuesday refused to stay UP govt's order mandating restaurants along kanwar yatra route to display QR codes along with the names of owners. The court, which was hearing a petition against UP govt's order, said it would not get into all the issues at this stage but directed restaurant owners to display their license and registration certificates as required under the Food Safety and Standards Act.

It was Congress' conspiracy to malign Hindu community: Indore man discharged in Malegaon blast case

An Indore-based businessman who was discharged in the 2008 Malegaon blast case eight years ago, on Thursday (July 31, 2025) welcomed the acquittal of seven accused, and alleged that he was implicated in the case as a result of the Congress's "conspiracy" to malign the Hindu community. Demanding an apology from the Opposition party, he accused it of coining terms like "Hindu terrorism" and "saffron terrorism" to appease a particular section of society. A special court in Mumbai acquitted all seven accused, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Colonel Prasad Purohit, observing that there was "no reliable and cogent evidence" against them. The blast had killed six persons and injured 101 others nearly 17 years ago on September 29, 2008. Businessman Shyam Sahu from Indore, who was arrested in this case in October 2008, said he was in judicial custody for three years. The special court, however, discharged him in 2017 citing lack of evidence. Talking to PTI, Mr. Sahu alleged that he, Pragya Singh Thakur and others were implicated as part of a "Congress conspiracy" to malign the Hindu community by coining terms such as "Hindu terrorism" and "saffron terrorism" to appease a particular section. "We have got justice," he said about the court verdict. "The Congress' conspiracy has been exposed. The party should apologise for its conspiracy, though I don't think it will," he said. He said he had to face several "ordeals" following his arrest in the case. "While I was in jail after my arrest, my elder brother Mohan Sahu came to support me during a court appearance. Before my eyes, he suffered a heart attack and died about half-an-hour later. I could not do anything to save him," he added. "No one can compensate for the loss my family suffered due to the death of my elder brother," Mr. Sahu said.

Kerala Nuns' Arrest: Chhattisgarh Woman Now Says ‘Was Coerced to Give Adverse Statement'

The woman has said that she was 'threatened and assaulted' by Jyoti Sharma, a woman associated with a right-wing outfit, and that the police based their FIR on what members of the Bajrang Dal told them. Congress MPs Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal and Hibi Eden with others stage a protest over the arrest of two Catholic nuns. Photo: PTI New Delhi: In a fresh twist to the arrest of two nuns from Kerala in Chhattisgarh, one of the women who they attempted to convert to Christianity and thereafter traffic, has told The Indian Express that she was 'coerced to give an adverse statement against them.' The arrest of the two Malayali nuns – Preeti Marry and Vandana Francis – along with another person, Sukhman Mandavi, by police at Durg railway station on July 24, based on the complaint of a local Bajrang Dal worker that they were forcibly converting three women from Narayanpur and were attempting to traffic them, has created a nationwide uproar, and also caused an attack on minority communities. The Indian Express report said that one the three persons, a 21-one year old tribal woman, told the newspaper that she was 'threatened and assaulted by Jyoti Sharma, a woman associated with a right-wing outfit, to change her statement, and the police based their FIR (First Information Report) on what members of the Bajrang Dal told them'. The woman, who had returned to her home in Narayanpur on July 30 after spending five days at a shelter home in Durg, told the daily on phone, 'Please release all three (the arrested accused), they are innocent.' Recounting the sequence of events on July 24 that led to the arrest of the nuns at the Durg railway station, the woman said she had gone to the station to travel 'with the nuns of her own will' and with her 'parents' consent.' She alleged that 'Sharma assaulted her', and the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Durg 'did not record her statement'. Instead, she alleged, the police based the FIR on a statement given by Bajrang Dal members. The woman from Narayanpur said she, along with the other two women from Orcha in Narayanpur, had reached the railway station around 6 AM. According to the report, 'They were accompanied by Mandavi. Around 9 am, the nuns, whom she had never met, arrived. Shortly after, a Bajrang Dal worker and the GRP reached the scene and started questioning them.' She related over phone, 'They took us to the railway police station. We were scolded a lot, and Jyoti Sharma hit me twice on the face.' The woman alleged that Sharma told her 'if you do not follow what we say, we will put your siblings in jail and assault them. They wanted us to say that we were brought here forcibly. I told Sharma that I have come of my own will and have the consent of my parents. I said this inside the police station in the presence of two to three policemen.' 'I had met the nuns for the first time. When we were being assaulted, one of the nuns said, 'do not worry, I am here with you.' She told the person beating us, 'hit us, but not them',' the woman said. Jyoti Sharma, when contacted by Express, said, 'I did not touch any one of them. When I reached, they were already inside the police station. Will the police allow me to touch them? I am hearing this allegation for the first time; earlier, they were saying I beat a nun, which is false.' Meanwhile, Rishi Mishra, the Bajrang Dal's state coordinator, told the daily, 'A rickshaw driver associated with the Bajrang Dal overheard the conversation between the nuns and the women and suspected they were being trafficked, after which our workers reached the spot and gave a complaint to the GRP.' Misha told the newspaper that Sharma 'is not from the Bajrang Dal but from the Durga Vahini Matrushakti.' On being asked, she identified herself as 'a Hindutvawadi who turns up wherever Hindutva needs saving.' Chhattisgarh DGP Arun Kumar Gautam declined to comment on the Narayanpur woman's allegations, saying, 'Matter is sub-judice,' the report added. The nuns were refused bail by a local court in Durg on July 30, stating that it lacked jurisdiction to hear the plea as the charges involved serious offences, including human trafficking, which comes under the ambit of the National Investigating Agency (NIA). 'The judge directed that the matter be taken up with the special NIA court in Bilaspur,' as per a Matrubhumi report. It said the advocates of the nuns are preparing to move a fresh bail plea in the Chhattisgarh high court. 'Meanwhile, the court move triggered celebrations by Bajrang Dal activists who had gathered outside the court in large numbers,' said the report. The issue has been raised in the ongoing parliament session, with MPs from Kerala demanding immediate release of the nuns. Three MPs from the southern state who visited the nuns in Durg jail, also met Union home minister Amit Shah on July 30 on the matter. Dharmasthala mass grave case: SIT recovers bones at 6th burial site

Mangaluru (Karnataka): In a major development in connection with the mass grave allegation case, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has recovered bones during the excavation of the sixth burial site at a Hindu pilgrimage centre in Mangaluru district of Karnataka, sources confirmed on Thursday. This discovery is likely to mark a significant turning point in the investigation into the mass grave allegations in the Dharmasthala temple town. According to SIT sources, two bones were recovered from the sixth burial site located in a forested area. Following the recovery, the SIT has shifted its full focus to a careful and detailed excavation of the site, with the entire team redirected to assist with the process. In response to the discovery, SIT chief DGP P. Mohanty and DIG M.N. Anuchet are rushing to the site. The excavation is being carried out in the presence of the Tehsildar, forensic science experts, and SIT personnel. Authorities are proceeding cautiously with the digging process. The recovered bones will be documented and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for further examination and DNA analysis. Sources stated that the whistle blower has claimed that he had buried 8 bodies at the 6th burial site. However, no official statement has been released yet regarding the discovery. Meanwhile, DGP and IGP M.A. Saleem has issued an order deputing nine additional police personnel — including a head constable and several constables — to assist the SIT in the ongoing investigation. Earlier, the department had provided 20 police officers to the SIT. Digging at the marked burial sites continued for the third consecutive day on Thursday, despite rain. Of the 13 marked burial sites, excavation work is currently underway at sites numbered 6, 7, and 8. Civic workers are being deployed to carry out the digging, while Tehsildars, forensic science experts, and the complainant are also present at the site for monitoring. SIT chief Mohanty had earlier stated that nothing has been recovered from the burial sites excavated so far. However, reports have surfaced that sleuths recovered a red torn blouse and a PAN card belonging to a woman named Lakshmi from the first burial site. Additionally, the whistle blower and complainant in the case has reportedly submitted a skull — allegedly excavated from the burial site — to the SIT. In a major development, on July 11, the unidentified complainant in the case, who had claimed that he was forced to bury several bodies of women and girls who were raped and murdered in Dharmasthala village appeared before a court in Karnataka's Mangaluru district and recorded his statement. He requested that the police exhume the bodies in his presence. He further alleged that the bodies of the women showed clear signs of sexual assault. They were found without clothes or undergarments and bore injuries suggesting violent sexual acts. The revelations have shocked the state. A retired Supreme Court judge and activists demanded a SIT probe monitored by the Supreme Court or the High Court into the shocking Dharmasthala murders involving many women, girls and destitute men. The development has sparked a major controversy.
