Texans GM Nick Caserio breaks down C.J. Stroud's offseason growth
C.J. Stroud's growth in 2025 could be the reason why the Houston Texans take the next jump forward in AfC contention this fall.
The Texans posted back-to-back 10-win seasons under Stroud's watch. They won the division each year and a playoff game, orchestrated behind a quarter of dominance from the former 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year.
But that's where conversations stop. In back-to-back divisional round losses, Houston's offense struggled to find consistency. Stroud also never found a ryhthm, leading to setbacks on drives and eventual dissolving moments of promise to pull away with a victory.
Year 3 is somewhat of a prove-it one for Stroud under new offensive coordinator Nick Caley. No, the former No. 2 overall pick won't be out of a job or alter the Texans' plans of his long-term future with the organization, but his execution could decide if Houston can be trusted as a legimiate playoff force in the future with teams like Kansas City, Buffalo and Baltimore.
Texans general manager Nick Caserio is confident that his quarterback has only scratched the surface of his potential entering 2025.
"He's very prideful," Caserio said on the latest episode of the 'Up and Adams Show' with Kay Adams. "He cares a lot about winning, and he wants to go out there and perform well on a weekly basis. And I think any player, every player gets frustrated when things don't go your way, but your ability to bounce back and have a certain level of mental toughness, to be able to handle what's in front of you."
What version of Stroud is the real one? In 2023, he led the league in touchdown-to-interception ratio (5:1) while throwing for over 4,000 yards and completing 63.4 percent of his passes. Last season, the interception total doubled while his touchdown total decreased.
A sophomore slump is common in the NFL as more film is put out on a player. It also doesn't help that Houston allowed the third-most sacks in 2025, including 52 against its franchsie quarterback.
Caserio mentioned that the offseason acquisitions should help Stroud feel more relaxed in the pocket, but his mentality and drive for success will also be factors into his growth.
"C.J. cares a lot about winning," Caserio said. "He's had a great offseason. He's been here, really, since February."
"I think he's got the right mindset. He understands that we can all improve, and we can all get better, and this is what the offseason is for."
The Texans return to practice for the start of rookie minicamp next week. Voluntary OTAs begin on May 26.

Commanders' Jayden Daniels Named 'Dark Horse' MVP Candidate

Commanders' Jayden Daniels Named 'Dark Horse' MVP Candidate originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Washington Commanders' quarterback Jayden Daniels is already seen as one of the top players in the conference after a superb rookie season. Advertisement Jayden led the team to a 12-win season, two playoff wins, and an NFC Championship game in his first year, and he also won Offensive Rookie of the Year. Now, as we turn to 2025, the Commanders, after trading for Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil, have pushed all their chips into the middle of the Super Bowl table. Of course, Daniels will be central to any success Washington has in 2025, and for Judy Battista, she's named Jayden as a dark horse for the MVP award. "He might not even be that much of a dark horse," Battista writes. "Daniels got a handful of fourth- and fifth-place votes last season, in which he was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year. With an improved offensive line, the addition of Deebo Samuel and a year of NFL experience under his belt, Daniels is positioned to ascend to the top tier of quarterbacks. If he does, and if the Commanders make another playoff push, Daniels will get plenty of attention." Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels (5).Eric Hartline-Imagn Images It is no secret that if the Commanders have a good season, Daniels will be the reason why. Advertisement Granted, we know that success from one year to another isn't the same, and Houston Texans star C.J. Stroud is proof of that, but Daniels does have a good supporting cast around him, with most of last year's players returning. But as far as MVP talk, when going up against Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Joe Burrow, it seems like a tall order. However, after his exploits in his rookie season, Daniels might be able to prove he deserves to be in the same conversation as those mentioned above. Would Daniels really be a dark horse for MVP? For some, he might have a legitimate shot. 2025 NBA Free Agents: Teams Should Keep An Eye On This Forgotten Wing

HOUSTON, TEXAS - DECEMBER 27: Jabari Smith Jr. #10 and Jae'Sean Tate #8 of the Houston Rockets react ... (Photo by) With the 2024-25 season nearing its conclusion, it is time to start looking ahead to the offseason. In this article series, we will take a look at under-the-radar options in the 2025 Free Agency Pool. For the sake of simplicity, we are going to focus primarily on unrestricted free agents. The 2025 offseason projects to be a busy one for the suddenly formidable Houston Rockets. Among their myriad decisions to make over these next few months is whether or not they should bring unrestricted free agent Jae'Sean Tate back for his sixth season in Texas. Given how well-liked Tate seems to be by his teammates, the Rockets could very well want to bring him back on a team-friendly deal. However, with so many other young players to develop, Houston may opt to let him walk and focus on feeding their bigger fish. If the latter transpires, playoff teams across the land should be scouring to sign Tate this summer. Last season, Tate appeared in just 52 games, averaging 3.6 PPG and 2.3 RPG in 11.3 minutes of action. He also did not see a single second in the Rockets' first round series against the Golden State Warriors (although he was dealing with an ankle injury). What makes a player like this worth writing an entire article about? Well, before we discuss this, we need to address some critical context. In his essence, Tate is a defense-first wing/forward. Unfortunately for him, the Rockets are chock full of this exact player type, and all of them rank higher on the totem pole than Tate. Between Amen Thompson, Dillon Brooks, Jabari Smith Jr., Tari Eason, and Cam Whitmore (who isn't really a good defender but still ranks ahead of Tate on the depth chart because of his untapped potential), the Rockets simply don't have enough minutes for a guy like Tate. Basketball is all about building a balanced roster. The Rockets have too many players similar to Tate for him to be valuable to them. But just because one playoff team doesn't have much need for him doesn't mean another one won't. For his career, Tate is a 30.9% 3-point shooter. Once upon a time, that type of efficiency for a player of his usage would be a death sentence in the playoffs. However, given the rise of physicality over the last few years and the innovations in the field of cutting, Tate's strengths have become much more useful, and his weaknesses far less damaging. For about the last year and a half, the league has revised its officiating approach to allow for more physicality and fewer fouls. This has increased the value of defense-first players like Tate (96th percentile in Defensive Estimated Plus-Minus, per Dunks & Threes). Tate is also a serviceable cutter, as evidenced by his ability to get to the rim (78th percentile rim frequency, per Cleaning the Glass). His efficiency isn't as good, but that's likely a byproduct of the team's poor spacing. Clearly, though, he has the athleticism to find pockets of space and explode at the hoop, which should translate well to a team with less clutter inside. He was also in the 94th percentile in offensive rebounding rate among forwards (another indicator of his knack for cutting). What really draws me to Tate is his underrated skill with the ball. This season, he didn't get as many repetitions, but in 2023-24, his true shooting on drives was at 60%, which ranked in the 84th percentile leaguewide (per Thinking Basketball). So, if teams try to close out short to him, Tate has the ability to put the ball on the floor and bulldoze them with his powerful frame. Like many of the other names we will highlight in this series, Tate likely isn't a starting-caliber forward on a high-end team. But his high-end defensive impact coupled with his skills as a driver, cutter, and rebounder on offense gives him the makeup of a key rotational piece on a playoff team that isn't rich in wings/forwards like the Rockets (think a team like the Milwaukee Bucks or New York Knicks). And since his value has been diminished by the fact a logjam at forward made everyone forget about him, a team could nab this sneaky contributor for not too much more than the veteran minimum. That's a heck of a value for someone who, in the right matchup, could help swing a series.

Jayden Daniels Receives Noteworthy Spot in Recent Quarterback Rankings

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Every year, the NFL sees a new batch of young quarterbacks come in and take the league by storm. Last season, the main player to do so was Jayden Daniels of the Washington Commanders. After being selected No. 2 overall in the 2024 draft, he quickly showed that he's going to be a force for years to come. Daniels ended up taking home the Offensive Rookie of the Year award following a strong first season with the Commanders. He was extremely efficient for a first-year quarterback, racking up 25 touchdowns to just nine interceptions while also throwing for over 3,500 yards. Led by one of the NFL's bright young quarterbacks, Daniels managed to lead Washington to 12 wins in the regular season. This was good enough to sneak into the postseason, where they nearly pulled off a Cinderella run. Despite entering as the No. 6 seed in the NFC, they managed to make it all the way to the conference championship. Washington's luck would run out there, as they would be sent home by Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles. Among his biggest supporters is former NFL QB Chris Simms. Before every season, Simms puts out a ranking of the top quarterbacks in the NFL. Coming off his impressive rookie season, Daniels finds himself near the top of the list. Simmons placed the Commanders' emerging star at No. 5, trailing only Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson. Among the players Daniels is just ahead of includes Matthew Stafford, Justin Herbert, and Jalen Hurts. "You talk about efficiency in the pass game, not turning the ball over, and you couple that with 900 yards rushing on top of that? The sky is the limit," Simms said of Daniels. His placement on Simms' rankings is a testament to that, as many are already crowning him a top-five player at his position. Luckily for him, the Commanders were busy this offseason helping bolster the cast of talent around him. Back in March, Washington pulled off a blockbuster deal to bring in Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers. Between him and Terry McLaurin (when he returns from his holdout), Daniels has a pair of dynamic receivers at his disposal now. Still with a few months until the regular season gets underway, only time will tell if Daniels lives up to his spot on this list.
