PowerBall jackpots at R53 million on Friday, 15 August
According to lottery operator ITHUBA, the PowerBall jackpot now stands at R15 million, while the PowerBall Plus prize has reached R38 million ahead of the next draws scheduled for Friday, 15 August.

Why are Lotto, Powerball jackbot draws no longer televised live?
Ithuba – the licence operator of the South African lottery – have long been accused of rigging their Lotto and Powerball jackpot draws, which have become digitised in recent years. Earlier this week, the anonymous winner of R124 million raised eyebrows after claiming she had mistakenly ignored a notification from her bank. Since Ithuba took over the licence in 2015, under the guidelines of the National Lotteries Commission (NLC), the lottery has steered away from live televised draws. From glamorous shows like the Road To Riches , presented by the glamorous Amor Vittone and the charming Nimrod Nkosi, winning numbers are now picked by a random number generator (RNG) system. According to Ithuba, the Lotto and Powerball jackpot numbers are drawn in the presence of an independent auditor, and under surveillance. They are then verified and broadcast to the public via a digitised system. Ithuba's Michelle van Trotsenburg revealed that Lotto and Powerball winning numbers were generated shortly before their scheduled broadcast in a 'rigorous pre-draw process to ensure accuracy and security' The stringent verification process was in line with global standards. 'The authenticity of each draw is ensured through independent verification, regulatory oversight, and thorough documentation at every step', Trotsenburg said. South Africa's National Lottery shifted to digital RNG draws in 2015 under Ithuba for better security, efficiency, and to reduce tampering risks, with physical balls as backup only. Live broadcasts continue on SABC2 (Lotto) and Mzansi Magic (PowerBall), but show animated results… — Grok (@grok) August 8, 2025 'Our unwavering commitment to transparency and alignment with global best practices ensures the integrity of each draw,' she added. Although digital draws are the norm, Ithuba states that ball machines still exist, but are 'only a consideration if the RNG is not functioning.' On the X app, South Africans have called for Ithuba to revert to physical, and not electronic, Lotto and Powerball draws. South Africans are voicing their concern over the legitimacy of a R124 million Powerball winner. Many are demanding the return of live Lotto draws. Image via @sa_lottery Many believe the digitised system is 'rigged', with numbers pre-selected. Others claim there is no proof that winners exist. Go back to the days of live lotto draw with a presenter announcing the selected machine and the ball set, a special guest pressing a button to release the balls and an auditor physically there watching. Until then, you're lying, we don't believe you, you're handpicking winners. — MENELIKZA🇿🇦🇵🇸 (@tshepomahlonoko) August 7, 2025 Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. US Tariffs: SA negotiates MAJOR stone fruit trade deal with China
In some good news for the agricultural sector, Minister John Steenhuisen has announced five new trade agreements for stone fruit exports to China. This marks the first time South Africa has negotiated more than one production agreement with the Far East trade giant. The five stone fruit products are apricots, peaches, nectarines, plums, and prunes. The trade agreements will be formalised during the upcoming G20 summit. During the announcement, the Agriculture Minister emphasised how the new protocols are set to open fresh avenues for local farmers, providing alternative markets to counter the impact of ongoing US trade tariffs. SA government continues in its mission to protect South Africa's US market share while opening new opportunities in Asia and the Middle East. 'In terms of diversification, China is a huge opportunity for South Africa,' Steenhuisen said. 'With a population of 1.6 billion, that's a lot of mouths to feed.' 'We hope to conclude this protocol on the sidelines of the G20 next month.' Once these stone fruit trade agreements with China are established, cherries and mangoes are next on the list of exports. A 30% tariff on key exports to the US, including citrus, wine, sugar cane, and beef, took effect on 1 August. This all but ended the duty-free access South Africa enjoyed under the Africa Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA). While citrus exports managed to avoid major disruption this season, the stonefruit sector was facing a more immediate challenge. Steenhuisen is also working with the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition to safeguard South Africa's position in the US market. A revised proposal addressing Washington's concerns has been submitted, and key barriers for poultry, blueberries, and pork have already been resolved. Shipments of these products from the US are expected to arrive soon. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Here is the forecast petrol price for September 2025
The latest petrol and diesel price projections show that there could well be some good news for South Africa's motorists at the pumps early next month. Both the petrol and diesel prices are set to drop – should market conditions remain the same for the next three weeks. In recent days the rand has strengthened against the dollar while the brent crude price has dropped – a perfect recipe for good news for motorists. Below, the latest projections as received by The South African website from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), effective Thursday, 14 August. FUEL PRICE CHANGE Petrol 93 decrease of 15 cents Petrol 95 decrease of 8 cents Diesel 0.05% decrease of 33 cents Diesel 0.005% decrease of 35 cents Illuminating Paraffin decrease of 26 cents If the market conditions were to remain consistent for the remainder of the month – an unlikely scenario with the rand/dollar exchange rate fluctuating and the oil price ever changing – a decrease of 15 cents is expected for petrol 93 octane motorists and a decrease of eight cents for 95 users. Meanwhile, diesel motorists would see something between a 33 and 35 cents per litre decrease. Finally, illuminating paraffin is expected to drop by 26 cents in price. FUEL PRICE IN SOUTH AFRICA IMPACTED BY TWO MAIN FACTORS: 1. The international price of petroleum products, driven mainly by oil prices 2. The rand/dollar exchange rate used in the purchase of these products Oil price At the time of publishing the brent crude oil price is $66.37 a barrel. Exchange rate At the time of publishing the rand/dollar exchange rate is R17.58/$. The final overall price changes for both petrol and diesel will be confirmed early next month with the new prices taking effect at midnight on Tuesday, 2 September 2025. Go easy on the accelerator until then, Mzansi.
