LAPD increases security at Thai Town festival after deadly Vancouver attack
Security is increasing at a popular Los Angeles street festival following the tragic and deadly attack in Vancouver on Saturday night.
The 16th Annual Thai New Year Songkran Festival, which runs all day, is active on Hollywood Boulevard between Western and Normandie Avenues. The East Hollywood festival celebrating Thai New Year is now under heavy surveillance by the Los Angeles Police Department.
At about 8 p.m. on Saturday, a 30-year-old man drove a vehicle into a crowd of people at a Filipino heritage festival in Vancouver, Canada. As of Sunday morning, 11 people were dead and as many as 20 were injured.
The death toll is expected to rise in the coming days, authorities said.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who is preparing for a national election on Monday, said one person is in custody, and it's believed he acted alone. The suspect has a 'significant' history of police interactions, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
The Vancouver Police Department said authorities are 'confident' that the violence was not an act of terrorism, as there's no evidence that there was 'political or religious ideology' behind it.
Back in L.A., extra barriers were added to block vehicles from entering the festival area. Patrolling officers will be on 'high alert.'

An aide to Los Angeles City Councilmember Ysabel Jurado has been put on unpaid leave following their arrest at an anti-ICE protest. 'My office is aware that a member of my staff has been arrested. The allegations are deeply concerning and I take them very seriously,' Jurado said in a statement provided to LA Mag. According to the Los Angeles Times, which obtained Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department inmate records, Luz Aguilar was arrested around 7 p.m. on June 9 for suspicion of assaulting a police officer with a deadly weapon. Their twin sister, Antonia Aguilar, was also arrested, and they were being held in lieu of the $50,000 bail. Aguilar had been the deputy of community growth and economic innovation for Jurado. Last year during her campaign for the City Council seat she now occupies, Yurado — who declared herself an abolitionist who would get rid of the LAPD in a Democratic Socialist of America questionnaire — was criticized when she was recorded saying "Fuck the Police." Serving District 14, she represents Eagle Rock, Highland Park, Lincoln Heights, El Sereno, Boyle Heights and downtown. Yurado took office in December 2024 and became the first person of Filipino descent on the city council. 'While I respect the individual's right to due process, I hold my team to the highest standards of conduct,' Jurado also said. 'They have been placed on unpaid leave while we assess the facts and consider appropriate action.' When ICE raids began on June 6, Jurado spoke to a crowd outside City Hall, reflecting on the 'heinous' acts of the federal government 'to inflict fear and suffering' during Pride Month and graduation celebrations. 'Make no mistake, this was not a coincidence. It was a deliberate act and a calculated attempt to take joy from our communities, to replace celebration with anxiety,' she said. 'What kind of government plans this violence during our most sacred moments of joy? The footage speaks for itself. This is cruelty disguised as policy. Any notion that this is about public safety is a deluded lie.' Aguilar is also the child of Pasadena Councilmember Rick Cole, who has been in attendance at protests. 'It's a loud, but entirely peaceful exercise of our rights to stand against cruel and arbitrary deportations of our neighbors and workers in our community,' he wrote in an Instagram post. Two men charged with possessing Molotov cocktails at LA protests
Federal prosecutors announced charges Wednesday against two men accused of possessing Molotov cocktails during recent protests in Los Angeles in response to immigration raids. According to an affidavit filed with a complaint by prosecutors, Emiliano Galvez, 23, threw a Molotov cocktail over a wall where sheriff's deputies were attempting to control a crowd. The other man charged, 27-year-old Wrackkie Quiogue, was allegedly holding the incendiary when Los Angeles Police Department officers approached him. Quiogue then apparently threw it away. Prosecutors also announced charges against two others for throwing water bottles, beer cans and other objects at federal officers. Quiogue appeared in court on Tuesday, and the other three defendants are expected to appear in court in the coming days. 'When protesting crosses the line into violence, the penalties will be severe,' said United States Attorney Bill Essayli in a press release announcing the charges. 'We will not relent in dispensing swift justice to criminals who take advantage of our country's freedoms to engage in lawlessness.' The complaint against Galvez also alleges that he was in the United States illegally, claiming he had overstayed a tourist visa issued in 2014. It said Galvez was arrested for being unlawfully present in the United States on June 9, and then identified as the individual seen in photographs throwing the device at a protest two days earlier, based on his tattoos. The protests in Los Angeles were triggered after Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids at several local businesses, before spreading to the areas around federal buildings where people arrested in the raids were believed to be detained. In response, President Trump has deployed National Guard troops and mobilized Marines to assist in quelling the protests, against the wishes of California officials including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D) and Gov. Gavin Newsom (D). Newsom and Bass have blamed Trump's move as inflaming the protests. Democratic senators grilled Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the legality of the deployments at a Wednesday hearing. Bass for the first time declared a curfew on Tuesday for the portion of downtown where the protests had been most concentrated.
