Los Angeles City Councilmember Ysabel Jurado Aide on Leave Following Anti-Ice Protest Arrest
An aide to Los Angeles City Councilmember Ysabel Jurado has been put on unpaid leave following their arrest at an anti-ICE protest. 'My office is aware that a member of my staff has been arrested. The allegations are deeply concerning and I take them very seriously,' Jurado said in a statement provided to LA Mag. According to the Los Angeles Times, which obtained Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department inmate records, Luz Aguilar was arrested around 7 p.m. on June 9 for suspicion of assaulting a police officer with a deadly weapon. Their twin sister, Antonia Aguilar, was also arrested, and they were being held in lieu of the $50,000 bail. Aguilar had been the deputy of community growth and economic innovation for Jurado.
Last year during her campaign for the City Council seat she now occupies, Yurado — who declared herself an abolitionist who would get rid of the LAPD in a Democratic Socialist of America questionnaire — was criticized when she was recorded saying "Fuck the Police."
Serving District 14, she represents Eagle Rock, Highland Park, Lincoln Heights, El Sereno, Boyle Heights and downtown. Yurado took office in December 2024 and became the first person of Filipino descent on the city council.
'While I respect the individual's right to due process, I hold my team to the highest standards of conduct,' Jurado also said. 'They have been placed on unpaid leave while we assess the facts and consider appropriate action.' When ICE raids began on June 6, Jurado spoke to a crowd outside City Hall, reflecting on the 'heinous' acts of the federal government 'to inflict fear and suffering' during Pride Month and graduation celebrations. 'Make no mistake, this was not a coincidence. It was a deliberate act and a calculated attempt to take joy from our communities, to replace celebration with anxiety,' she said. 'What kind of government plans this violence during our most sacred moments of joy? The footage speaks for itself. This is cruelty disguised as policy. Any notion that this is about public safety is a deluded lie.' Aguilar is also the child of Pasadena Councilmember Rick Cole, who has been in attendance at protests. 'It's a loud, but entirely peaceful exercise of our rights to stand against cruel and arbitrary deportations of our neighbors and workers in our community,' he wrote in an Instagram post.

Mayor Adams, NYC ask court to stop ICE arrests at immigration court hearings
Mayor Eric Adams and the City of New York are calling on the federal government to end its practice of arresting people who appear at immigration court. It comes after immigrants sued the Trump administration over the practice. Tuesday morning, the city filed an amicus brief calling for a halt to it. "New York City has become the epicenter of the Trump administration's courthouse arrest campaign," said New York City Corporation Counsel Muriel Goode-Trufant. "With every illegal courthouse arrest, Immigration and Customs Enforcement is chipping away at the bedrock principles of fairness and due process that support our entire system of justice. We strongly support plaintiffs in this case, who are fighting to uphold the rule of law and reverse an unprecedented federal policy that undermines the public good." "From my first days as a rookie cop to my current role as mayor of New York City, my job is, and has always been, to keep law-abiding New Yorkers safe. We should allow New Yorkers to feel secure to attend legal proceedings in their pursuit to obtain legal status," Adams said. "I've been clear, no one in our city should feel forced to hide in the shadows or be afraid to use resources, and that includes sending children to school, going to a hospital when sick, calling 911 when in danger, or going to a court hearing when called upon to do so." "While the City does not set immigration policy or decide who enters this country, it must govern with an eye to the reality that asylum seekers and undocumented immigrants have made the City their home. The tactics employed against many of the individuals represented here— using their appearances at court for routine immigration hearings as opportunities to detain them—threaten to deter people from accessing the court system on which local governance depends. The implications threaten to reach well beyond the immigration arena and reach countless other matters affecting public welfare," Goode-Trufant wrote in the brief. Goode-Trufant wrote that immigrants heading to court have been "caught in a trap laid by immigration authorities" which presents them "with an impossible choice: risk detention by attending future court proceedings or run the same risk by not attending. To put it mildly, this undermines the public interest." CBS News New York has reached out to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for comment and is awaiting a reply. Back in July, however, a DHS spokesperson called arresting immigrants at courthouses common sense. "Nothing in the Constitution prohibits arresting a lawbreaker where you find them ... It conserves valuable law enforcement resources because they already know where a target will be," a DHS spokesperson said at the time. The New York City Council recently passed an additional $33.6 million in funding for pro-bono legal services, saying the crackdown has led to an increased need for legal support.

ACLU likens Trump's Fort Bliss migrant facility to WWII internment camps: ‘Deranged and lazy'
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) invoked President Franklin Roosevelt's internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II as the Trump administration was set to open a massive detention center at Fort Bliss in Texas on Monday. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) torched the comparison, with a top official left wondering why an organization with such a name "care[s] more about illegal aliens than U.S. citizens," in comments to Fox News Digital. "Comparisons of illegal alien detention centers to internment camps used during World War II are deranged and lazy. The ACLU's smears against our brave ICE law enforcement are no doubt contributing to the more than 1,000% increase in assaults against them," Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said. "[The ACLU] should change their name. The facts are ICE is targeting the worst of the worst—including murderers, MS-13 gang members, pedophiles, and rapists. 70% of ICE arrests are of criminal illegal aliens who have been convicted or have pending charges in the U.S. — that doesn't even include known or suspected terrorists, foreign gang members, convictions for violent crimes in foreign countries, or INTERPOL notices." On Sunday, before Fort Bliss' "Camp East Montana" center was to open at the historically pivotal military base near the U.S.–Mexico and New Mexico borders, the ACLU's regional affiliates released a joint statement calling the move "another shameful chapter" in the base's history. "The renewed use of this base to detain immigrants and stage deportations comes as the Trump administration continues to misuse military resources to deport long-standing residents and other immigrants," the release read, calling the president's mass-deportation agenda "dystopian." "President Trump's use of Fort Bliss for the nation's largest immigrant detention site is cruel and a reminder of a shameful detention legacy," added Sarah Mehta, a top official in the ACLU's Equality Division – who also called on Congress to stop DHS' agenda. "Thousands of people, including our neighbors and loved ones, will be torn from their communities while this administration enlists the military to rubberstamp its abusive agenda." Fort Bliss — named after the son-in-law of Mexican-American War hero and later President Zachary Taylor — also held a small number of German and Italian immigrants during World War II. In 1942, Roosevelt initiated an executive order targeting Americans descended from countries representing the Axis powers. The Democrat ushered in the incarceration of about 120,000 Japanese-Americans and smaller numbers of Italian and German descendants. While Fort Bliss was not a main "internment camp," it did hold small numbers of interred U.S. citizens, including as many as 70 "Issei," or first-generation Japanese-Americans living along the Pacific Coast. After the war, German scientist Wernher von Braun – a former Untersturmführer in the S.S. -- and other former Axis power-players worked there with the Americans to develop what eventually became the U.S. Space Program, now run by NASA. Considered a 38,000-soldier "megabase," it has also been a crucial staging ground for the War on Terror. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, toured Fort Bliss' new detention facility last week and told El Paso's NBC affiliate that the people who will be held there are already on their way out of the U.S. "These are people under final orders of deportation ... They have no legal right to be here," Cornyn said. El Paso's member of Congress, Democrat Veronica Escobar, disagreed. Escobar argued the $1 billion price tag would "enrich" private contractors and siphon funds from other needs in her district. As many as 5,000 detainees will be held at Fort Bliss, according to reports.

Letters to the Editor: A high school student walking his dog is hardly ‘the worst of the worst'
To the editor: Shame upon shame. An 18-year-old high school student walking his dog is arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement ('An L.A. high school senior was walking his dog. Then immigration agents grabbed him,' Aug. 14). I thought President Trump was after arresting 'the worst of the worst.' The 18-year-old arrested is Benjamin Guerrero-Cruz, who had overstayed his visa — hardly fitting Trump's arrest profile. Overstaying a visa is not a criminal offense; it is a civil violation. Second shame: The dog the student was walking was tied to a tree by ICE agents and then his collar was unclipped, allowing the, I imagine, scared animal to run loose on Sepulveda Boulevard, according to a GoFundMe page. Really, Trump? What are you doing? I wonder what happened to both the student and the dog. Hugo Pastore, Harbor City
