A recent Nolan Smith evaluation confirms what fans already know about Eagles pass rusher PFF named Eagles third-year pass rusher Nolan Smith the Eagles' make-or-break player for the 2025 NFL season
Most probably won't remember this now. Then again, they might, but if you don't, fear not, it's an incredible story that's worth hearing and retelling. Once upon a time, it seemed impossible that the Philadelphia Eagles might land Jalen Carter or Nolan Smith during the 2023 NFL Draft. Wouldn't you know it? Somehow, they wound up with both of them.
Even now, it's still hard to believe that it happened. Philadelphia made two first-round selections during that April's selection meeting. Jalen Carter fell to the Birds at nine. Nolan was still on the board when Howie Roseman and company found themselves on the clock at pick number 30.
Truth be told, some mock drafts and theories stated Nolan was a top-15 talent. After all, he had displayed elite athleticism. Just two months earlier, he had run an impressive 4.39-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine.
It was for that reason that some Birds fans would have been satisfied had he been taken with Philadelphia's earlier first-round selection. He sat behind Haason Reddick as a rookie but took a huge step forward in his sophomore NFL season.
Now comes the question. Can he take yet another leap? The pressure is a little thicker now, and that's what Philadelphia needs him to do.
Pro Football Focus labels Nolan Smith's third NFL season as a 'make-or-break' campaign
What a difference a couple of years makes. Nolan Smith has gone from a rookie waiting on his turn to the starting edge rusher on a depth chart harboring some uncertainty at the position. The Bryce Huff experiment didn't work. He's been traded. Brandon Graham retired. Josh Sweat left during the free-agency frenzy.
All eyes are on Smith and for good reason. After all, he was a first-round draft choice, so he is expected to be under the microscope all season. The cameras have already zoomed in and are following him. Pro Football Focus named him on their list featuring every NFL team's make-or-break player for the 2025 season.
Here's what Dalton Wasserman, the writer of this one, said about Philly's talented pass rusher: "Smith's make-or-break candidacy isn't an indictment of his NFL resumé as much as it is an indication of the Eagles' need for him to be a star. The team lost veteran edge defenders Josh Sweat and Brandon Graham this offseason, making Smith a sure-fire starter for the first time in his career."
No lies were told there. Wasserman continued his theory.
"He began to take on an expanded role late last season, recording a terrific 78.9 PFF overall grade across his final seven games. If that continues over the duration of the 2025 season, Philadelphia's defensive line will once again be an elite unit."
If anyone is worried about some apprehension, don't be. Smith is as cool as they come. Few Eagles carry more swagger. He has the confidence of his coaches. Listening to Nick Sirianni rave about him instills confidence that another breakout is on the horizon. Everyone should hope that Coach is right.
Smith really established himself last season, starting ten of 16 regular-season in-game appearances. He notched 42 tackles, including eight that resulted in a loss of yardage. He also racked up 6.5 sacks, 11 additional hits on the opposing quarterback, two pass breakups, a forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.
He turned it on during the postseason, adding another forced fumble to Philadelphia's cause during the Eagles' four-game run to glory. He forced a fumble. His four sacks and four tackles for loss led every competitor playing during the postseason. Smith played through injury in the Super Bowl, never letting on to most that something was bothering him until the game was over.
Wasserman is right. The hope of another leap forward isn't an indictment of what Smith has already done. It's just an attempt to state the obvious. The Eagles don't want him to play at an elite level. They need him to do so.
Jalyx Hunt looks ready, but make no mistake. Nolan Smith is Philadelphia's leader on the edge moving forward.

Bills' Josh Allen defends controversial 'tush push' play despite his team voting to ban it

Josh Allen is not seeing eye-to-eye with his own team about one of the biggest controversies in the sport. The Buffalo Bills were one of 22 teams to vote to ban the tush push – 24 were needed to officially make the play illegal. However, the quarterback himself, who has a knack for finding the end zone with his legs himself, said he believes that it should remain a part of the game. "I'm a big believer in if you can't stop it, keep running it, right?" Allen told Sports Illustrated. "I think that there's a few teams that do it better than others, but then you look at a few teams that try to do it, and it doesn't have the same success. Because, one, they maybe don't practice it enough or, two, they don't have the guys to do it. And just because a couple teams do it better than others, I don't feel like it should be banned. "I understand the merit of what it brings, and so I don't really sway one way or the other. I try to play the game based on the interpretation of the rules. And if that was the rule that was passed, you know, we'll find a different way. But I feel like if you can use it to your benefit, use it to your benefit. If you don't like it, my advice is to stop it, you know?" The Green Bay Packers initiated the rule-change proposal, which would have prohibited "an offensive player from pushing a teammate who was lined up directly behind the snapper and receives the snap, immediately at the snap." The proposal added that a penalty would be assessed on any offensive player who violated the rule. Proponents of the play and those who oppose it both presented strong arguments, while the league expressed worry about safety. Rich McKay, the NFL Competition Committee chair, said in April the issues go beyond safety, because there was not enough data to say whether it is a dangerous play. The league has said there have been no injuries reported from the tush push. Washington Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu called the play "cheap." During the tush push meeting with owners, Philadelphia Eagles team owner Jeffrey Lurie reportedly brought Jason Kelce into the meeting to explain why the tush push should be kept in the game. The Eagles have had the most success with the play over the last few years, and Kelce's input was apparently enough for owners to forgo approving the ban. We hit 81 in our Raiders countdown to kickoff. Who wore it best and who's wearing it now

We hit 81 in our Raiders countdown to kickoff. Who wore it best and who's wearing it now We've reached 81 days until the Raiders season opener at Foxboro against the Patriots, With our countdown at 81 days we take a look at who currently dons the number in Silver & Black and who has brought it the most distinction. No. 81 Who's wearing it now: WR Alex Bachman Bachman has been trying to find a role in an NFL offense for the past five years. He spent his first couple years in the league with the New York Giants, appearing in four games, but seeing no targets. He then bounced around offseason rosters and practice squads for a couple years before reappearing last season for the Raiders where he was elevated to the active roster in week four and got his first career catches in week six. In total he caught three passes in the team's game against the Steelers. Who wore it best: WR Tim Brown One of the greatest receivers in Raiders history. Nicknamed "Mr Raider", he had held the Raiders single-season receptions record for 23 years from 1997 to 2020. He still holds the record for most seasons leading the Raiders in receptions (11) and yards (10) and touchdowns (10). most career receptions (1070) and yards (14,734), 1000-yard seasons (nine), 100-yard games (43), and TD receptions (99). All of this despite beginning his career a primarily a return specialist and not becoming a full time starting wide receiver until his fifth season. Brown was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015.

2025 Philadelphia 76ers draft big board 6.0: The best fits at No. 3

2025 Philadelphia 76ers draft big board 6.0: The best fits at No. 3 The Philadelphia 76ers were rewarded with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft following a tough 24-58 season. The Sixers entered the season with championship expectations, but injuries decimated the roster and derailed any chances the team had at seriously contending for a title. As they head into this draft, there are plenty of options for the Sixers to look into. The goal for them is to get younger and add a player who can help them bounce back and turn things around. Philadelphia should be looking into every option in order to take the next steps forward toward title contention. Here is the sixth draft big board with the draft now just one week away. If one wants to see big board 1.0, it can be seen here and 2.0 can be seen here. While 3.0 can be seen here, 4.0 is here, and 5.0 is here. With that said, let's get into big board 6.0: 1. VJ Edgecombe, Baylor 2024-25 stats: 15.0 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 3.2 apg, 2.1 spg, 43.6% FG, 34% 3FG Previous ranking: 1 Many will be clamoring for Ace Bailey, and he will be a top option for Philadelphia, but Sixers Wire is firmly in the Edgecombe camp. He has the outlook to be the better player long term. He is supremely athletic, able to take any defender off the dribble, and attack the basket, and he is more than solid defensively as he is aggressive at the point of attack and can create turnovers. He is an outstanding worker, and even though there are some finishing issues at the basket, he is somebody who can contribute on that end right away. On top of that, he appears to be the frontrunner to be selected No. 3 after a strong visit with the Sixers. In terms of his catch-and-shoot ability, a skill needed on a team with Joel Embiid on it, he shot 45-for-124 (36.3%) on catch-and-shoot 3s per Synergy Sports. However, he did shoot 21-for-45 (46.7%) when unguarded on those attempts. It shows that he can knock down an open look should it be needed. That shows he has a lot of shooting upside for his position and should be a great option. All of these players have flaws, Bailey and Edgecombe included, but it feels as if Edgecombe has the best chance to produce right away. 2. Ace Bailey, Rutgers 2024-25 stats: 17.6 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.3 bpg, 1.0 spg, 46% FG, 34.6% 3FG Previous ranking: 3 Let's get one thing straight: Bailey is not Kevin Durant. It doesn't mean he isn't going to be a good player, but he is not Durant. He has good measurements with star potential, but the knock on him is that he settles for bad shots and the fact that Rutgers did not make the NCAA Tournament. Despite having Bailey, and Dylan Harper, the Scarlet Knights finished 15-17 and barely made their own conference tournament in the Big 10. He has fallen a bit on a lot of draft boards, but Bailey figures to be at least an All-Star at the next level, and the Sixers have to consider him along with Edgecombe at the top. In terms of his catch-and-shoot percentages, he shot 36-for-93 (38.7%) on those opportunities from deep. He shot 29-for-66 (43.9%) on those attempts while he was guarded. It shows that he has the skill and the want to take and make tough shots. There is a lot to like about his game, but there are some rough edges he needs to smooth out. 3. Kon Knueppel, Duke 2024-25 stats: 14.4 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.0 spg, 47.9% FG, 40.6% 3FG Previous ranking: 2 I get it. Bailey is long and athletic, and Edgecombe has long term potential, but will they contribute right away at this next level? Knueppel has shot up draft boards and when considering the Sixers could use another playmaker, he makes a lot of sense. Either way, if the Sixers are thinking spacing and elite shooting, then Knueppel should be their guy. He has a high basketball IQ being able to navigate off screens to get himself open for looks, he competes on the defensive end, and he is an underrated passer. There are defensive limitations, but he is for sure a rotation player in this league due to his shooting ability and playmaking skills. He shot 77-for-178 (43.3%) on catch-and-shoot 3s and was an impressive 36-for-84 (42.9%) on those attempts while guarded. He cannot do the things Bailey, Edgecombe, or Tre Johnson can do, but Knueppel should be on the radar of president Daryl Morey and Co. should they decide to trade down and add to the depth of the roster--which is another need for this group. 4. Tre Johnson, Texas 2024-25 stats: 19.9 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 2.7 apg, 0.9 spg, 42.7% FG, 39.7% 3FG Previous ranking: 4 Johnson has his flaws, but scoring and shooting certainly aren't one of them. He has an ability to light up the scoreboard at any moment by taking defenders to the basket, being able to knock down tough 3s, and he can shoot off the catch or off the dribble. If the Sixers are thinking a microwave scorer, then Johnson should be their guy. One can argue that he isn't worthy of a No. 3 pick, but he has skills that will translate to the NBA level. As mentioned, he shot 51-for-125 (40.8%) on catch-and-shoot 3s. He was 32-for-77 (41.6%) on those attempts while guarded. Even off the dribble, he shot 38-for-99 (38.4%) on those 3-point attempts. He is an electric player and the Sixers should certainly give him a look before they decide on a player with this selection. 5. Khaman Maluach, Duke 2024-25 stats: 8.6 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 0.5 apg, 1.3 bpg, 0.2 spg, 71.2% FG Previous ranking: 6 Maluach would be an option for Philadelphia should it want big man depth behind Embiid. With that being said, the Sixers do expect veteran Andre Drummond to exercise his player option for 2025-26 so he figures to return, and there is already young big man Adem Bona who made a name for himself as a rookie. However, Maluach stands at 7-foot-2 and the Sixers could always use some more size off the bench which has been an issue in the past. With that being said, Maluach is a bit raw offensively as he limited to putbacks and lob dunks off the pick-and-roll. While he does have soft hands to make all of this work on the offensive end, the Sixers would need him to add some type of jumper to his game. Philadelphia needs versatility out of its big men and Maluach would have to add to his game in order to stick. 6. Jeremiah Fears, Oklahoma 2024-25 stats: 17.1 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 4.1 apg, 1.6 spg, 43.4% FG, 28.4% 3FG Previous ranking: 5 These NBA Playoffs have shown the value of having three ball-handlers on the floor at times. One has to believe the Sixers are watching the playoffs with the idea that they can get to that level if they can bring in another ball-handler in the lineup. Fears fits that mold as somebody who can get the job done on the offensive end by running the offense and making things go smoothly. Fears was able to produce good numbers in the tough SEC and improved as the season wore on. Overall, he shot 36.1% on catch-and-shoot 3s and is an elite passer out of the pick-and-roll. If the jumper continues on an upward trajectory, then he is going to stick in this league for quite some time. The Sixers could always use another player with a high IQ to make life easier for the stars and Fears fits that mold.
