Tributes flow for 'angel' teen killed in 4WD rollover in WA's South West

The grief-stricken mother of a 15-year-old girl killed in a four-wheel drive rollover in Western Australia's South West has paid tribute to her daughter, saying her "presence lit up every space".
"I love you, miss you and want to kiss you," Sarah Highwood said.
Caitlyn Bragger died after a four-wheel drive driven by a 16-year-old left the road and rolled several times at Hoffman, 150 kilometres south of Perth, on Saturday night.
Five other teenagers were injured in the crash, one of whom had to be extricated from the wreckage by volunteer firefighters.
Four of the teenagers have since been discharged from hospital, with the fifth transferred to the Royal Perth Hospital.
It is understood the teens were on a camping trip at the nearby Logue Brook Dam.
Ms Highwood told the ABC the loss of her daughter had up-ended her life.
"Life will never be the same."
On a fundraising page set up to support the family with funeral costs, family friend Mekayla Cowcher wrote the Australind teenager was a "ray of sunshine".
"Caitlyn was a beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, aunty, and friend. She was a ray of sunshine in every room she entered — vibrant, outgoing, and full of life," Ms Cowcher wrote.
"There was never a dull moment with Caitlyn; her presence lit up every space and brought warmth to every heart."
Loved ones have remembered Caitlyn for her unwavering kindness, unique sense of humour, and deep love of family and friends.
"She had a passion for the outdoors, whether it was camping, four-wheel-driving, or spending time at the beach, those moments brought her true joy," Ms Cowcher said.
"Though her time with us was far too short, her spirit will live on in the memories we cherish and the lives she touched.
"Caitlyn's legacy is one of love, laughter, and light — a beautiful soul who will never be forgotten.
"Forever 15, forever in our memory and hearts. Our angel in heaven."
A police investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Two men on the run after Forrestfield man held at knifepoint in home invasion

Two men are on the run after an alleged home invasion in which a Perth pensioner was threatened with a machete, fearing for his life. Paul Doyle had just gone to bed on June 24 when his Forrestfield home was flooded with light, a man looming above him. "When I looked up, I was looking at this big silver machete," he said. The 78-year-old was told to get dressed, the knife-wielding man assuring him he would not be hurt. Mr Doyle said the two home invaders demanded cash, allegedly taking $300 from Mr Doyle's wallet, a bag of old one and two cent coins and some alcohol. He said he was held at knifepoint while one of the men searched the outside shed which held one of his beloved speedway race cars, which he built and raced for decades. Later Mr Doyle discovered white paint poured over the car's engine, worth an estimated $20,000. After about 30 minutes, the intruders told Mr Doyle to lie face down and count to 50, after which they were gone. The retiree was physically unharmed and described the men as "amateurs", offering Mr Doyle a glass of water and a blanket to lie on. "They were too polite," he said. "Both of them kept saying 'relax, we're not going to hurt you'. "My brain was still thinking every time he walked in with the machete ... I've only got to say something wrong and I could end up with my head bloody chopped off." After the intruders fled the scene, Mr Doyle ran to his neighbours, who alerted police. The two men remain on the run, with both described as having tan skin and speaking with a foreign accent. Mr Doyle said he thought the incident had been targeted, due to the offenders' apparent knowledge of his cars. "That was targeted, because [the engine is] the most expensive part of the car, but the rest of the car as well is expensive," he said. Detective First Class Constable Rebecka Phipps said the motivation for the alleged attack was being investigated. "At this stage we can't rule out whether it was targeted or not," she said. She said "appropriate and significant" resources have been dedicated to apprehending the alleged offenders. "This is a heinous crime against a vulnerable member of the community," she said. "People should feel safe within their own home and should not have to live in fear that these kinds of attacks will take place." Mr Doyle said a swift resolution to the matter would go a long way towards easing his concern. "I think I would love to see the police get them and put them in jail for 100 years," he said. "It knocked me around a lot." Anyone with information about the alleged incident is asked to contact police.

Attorney-General appeals 'plainly unjust' sentence for teen who caused triple fatal crash

The Attorney-General has appealed the sentence handed to a teenager who caused a triple fatal crash on the Fraser Coast, arguing it should have been considered the "worst category" of offending. Last year, a 14-year-old boy, who legally cannot be identified, pleaded guilty to several charges including dangerous operation of a vehicle causing three deaths and grievous bodily harm while excessively speeding. The teenager was sentenced to six years in detention and was ordered to serve 60 per cent of that in custody. During his sentencing, the court heard the then 13-year-old stole a car from Maryborough and drove it dangerously and at high speed on roads between there and Hervey Bay in April 2023. While in Maryborough, he caused a three-car collision, which killed Michale Chandler, 29, Kelsie Davies, 17, and Sheree Robertson, 52. A 23-year-old woman was also seriously injured in the collision. Earlier this year, Attorney-General Deb Frecklington announced the government would appeal the sentence on the legal ground it was manifestly inadequate. On Thursday, Crown Prosecutor Chris Cook argued in the Court of Appeal on behalf of the Attorney-General, that the sentencing judge should have determined this case of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle as "the worst category of the offence". "The only appropriate penalty to impose … was the maximum penalty of seven years detention," he said. Mr Cook told the court the six-year penalty was "unreasonable" and "plainly unjust", and said it should be increased given the teenager's conduct was "so grievous". "The sentence imposed … does not reflect the enormity and the seriousness of the offending," he said. At the time of his sentencing, a Childrens Court judge accepted the offences were "egregious" but had to consider a range of mitigating factors under youth justice legislation when determining his punishment. This included his young age, early guilty plea, lack of criminal history, disadvantaged childhood, and his rehabilitation prospects. Mr Cook told the court this was a case "where the mitigating factors shouldn't be reducing the maximum penalty". "[The sentencing judges] favoured the mitigating approach rather than the community deterrent approach, which is a double edge sword," he said. The teenager's lawyer Ed Whitton told the court it could not be said the sentencing judge did not have "proper regard to the seriousness of the offending". "That was front and centre of his honour's consideration," he said. Mr Whitton told the court it was a "difficult exercise" of sentencing discretion, but submitted it was "appropriately undertaken". "It is not a lenient sentence by any stretch of the imagination," he said. "Especially when recording a conviction was also factored into that." The court heard the teenager was due to be released in December next year and his community supervision order would expire in 2029. Three Court of Appeal judges have reserved their decision.

American man who died at Perisher revealed as 22-year-old Drew Youngquist

An American man who had travelled to Australia for the snow season has died in a snowboarding accident at Perisher, just months after arriving to work as a guide. 22-year-old Drew Youngquist died around 2.30pm on Tuesday after colliding with a padded pole on the ski fields near Jindabyne, about five-and-a-half hours south of Sydney. Despite urgent efforts by ski rescue crews and NSW Ambulance, he could not be revived. The Daily Telegraph reported that Mr Youngquist was an experienced skier who had been in Australia for only about three months. His family in the United States were informed of the tragedy within hours. Earlier this year, Mr Youngquist had shared his excitement on LinkedIn about joining local Jindabyne-based company Action Learning Initiatives. The company's director, Nathan Brown, said his colleagues were devastated. 'We are deeply saddened by the passing of Drew yesterday. He was a much-loved member of our team at ALI,' Mr Brown said. 'He was a warm and loving young man full of energy and passion for the outdoors. We will miss him, and our thoughts are with his family in Utah during this tragic time.' 'I grew up skiing from a young age at Snowbasin resort. After my dad taught me how to ski, I decided I wanted to snowboard and taught myself that,' he wrote online. 'I recently got into ski touring and got my avalanche rescue certifications. I even enjoy working on my skis and just finished my first season as a ski patroller.' Perisher's vice president and general manager, Nathan Butterworth, expressed his condolences. 'Perisher Ski Resort, Ski Patrol, and the entire Vail Resorts family extend our deepest sympathy and support to our guest's family and friends,' he said. NSW Police are preparing a report for the coroner.
