Peek behind the curtain: How RBTL chooses shows

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – The spring season of theatre and Broadway shows is set to begin in just over a week. This week, News 8 got the inside scoop from the Rochester Broadway Theatre League on how some of your favorite shows get chosen.
Tuesday, organizers told News 8 it's actually quite a simple process – it's all about knowing your audience first and foremost. Officials said once they figure out what folks are itching to see, they compare those shows to what's been successful on Broadway.
They said adding a mix of family shows and classics is something they strive for.
'One of the things I like to talk about in the equation is first of all – when you have subscribers that are dedicated to seeing your shows, you need to find a way to bring the best of the new and try to get the best Broadway shows that were on the year prior that are touring, that have won awards – things that people enjoy seeing and try to program them,' said Albert Nocciolino, a producer and presenter for RBTL.

He said, timing can often pose a challenge, including where tours for specific shows begin and where they end.
'If the reviews are good and the audience is enjoying them and people are having a good time, then they'll find their way on the road,' Nocciolino said. 'If you look at this current season we're in, we've got MJ the Musical, brand new show. Some Like it Hot, brand new show. Back to the Future, brand new show. We had Les Miserables and Mamma Mia, classics, shows that have been around 25 years can come back every six, seven, eight years and still do business. People love seeing them. We Try to find a family show. We had The Grinch this year as well, so, if you look at that combination…that's what happens every season. We get from the agents the shows that are ending up on the road and then try to program them.'

Forty years after "Back to the Future's" release, Michael J. Fox isn't done delighting fans. The Emmy-winning actor, 64, on Aug. 10 attended a Southampton, New York, IMAX screening of the film that jump started his career on the big screen. The crowd at the sold-out stayed afterward for his conversation with Southampton Playhouse's artistic director, Eric Kohn, with topics ranging from the twists in Fox's life and career over the past four decades – including his life with Parkinson's disease – to his work with his Michael J. Fox Foundation. "Michael's insights into his relationship to acting, and how it changed — first via blockbuster success and then through his diagnosis — made for a conversation that was by turns emotional, endearing, and inspirational," Kohn wrote in an Aug. 12 Instagram post. The Oscar-winning film from Robert Zemeckis was made on a $19 million budget and released in theaters on July 3, 1985. It went on to earn $224 million at the worldwide box office and has since become a Hollywood classic, even getting inducted into the Library of Congress' National Film Registry in 2007. Fox reprised his role as teen Marty McFly, alongside Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown, in two more "Back to the Future" movies. Lloyd, 86, has also continued to appear in films and TV shows, most recently the second season of "Wednesday" and "Hacks." He made a rare public appearance alongside wife Lisa Loiacono at the Hollywood premiere of his latest project, the Bob Odenkirk-starring "Nobody 2," on Aug. 11. A 'tsunami of misfortune' Michael J. Fox doesn't 'fear' death Since publicly revealing his Parkinson's diagnosis in 1998 – seven years after his diagnosis – Fox has continued to act in Hollywood while also advocating for and funding Parkinson's research through his foundation. In January, President Joe Biden awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom as he "warms hearts and captivates audiences as a fearless advocate for those with Parkinson's disease." The fastest-growing neurodegenerative condition in the U.S., Parkinson's is an incurable brain disorder, a progressive disease "that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements, such as shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination," according to the National Institute on Aging. Over the years, Fox has sustained multiple broken bones, including both arms, his shoulder, his orbital bone and cheek and his hand, which resulted in a serious infection. Fox combats his symptoms, such as paralysis of his facial muscles, through medication and trains to preserve his ambulatory skills. "One day I'll run out of gas," Fox told Town & Country magazine in 2023. "One day I'll just say, 'It's not going to happen. I'm not going out today.' If that comes, I'll allow myself that. "Certainly, if I were to pass away tomorrow, it would be premature, but it wouldn't be unheard of. And so, no, I don't fear that."

A Rom-Com Born in Britain and Set in New York Is Coming to Broadway

A meet-cute musical about two 20-somethings on their way to a wedding (his dad is marrying her sister — it's complicated) will add some song-and-dance to a play-heavy season on Broadway this fall. 'Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)' is small — just the pair of performers — and, according to reviews of several prior stagings, charming. The show began its life in 2019 with a different title — 'The Season' — and a couple of runs in England — at the New Wolsey Theater in Ipswich and at Royal & Derngate in Northampton. A new, retitled version arrived at the Kiln Theater in London in 2023, and then transferred to the West End the next year; earlier this year, it ran at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass. The Broadway production is scheduled to begin previews on Nov. 1 and to open Nov. 20 at the Longacre Theater. It will star Sam Tutty, who won an Olivier Award for playing the title role in the London production of 'Dear Evan Hansen,' and Christiani Pitts, who last starred on Broadway in an ill-fated musical adaptation of 'King Kong.' Tutty has been with the production since its London run; Pitts joined in Cambridge. The show is about a sweet young English cinema usher who flies to New York to attend the second wedding of his estranged father; the bride asks her sister, an American barista, wry by comparison, to pick him up. The two of them spend two days exploring New York, and getting to know each other, before the ceremony. In Britain, The Telegraph called it 'a total charmer,' while The Independent said the show 'captures all the messiness of being in your twenties without a plan, showing how big cities can crush anyone naïve enough to see them as a pretty backdrop to their dreams.' The show's book and music are by Jim Barne and Kit Buchan and it's directed and choreographed by Tim Jackson. The producers are Kevin McCollum, Tim Johanson, Glass Half Full Productions and Jamie Wilson Productions.

A customized black track suit. Papier-mâché 'Little Shop of Horrors' fly traps. Friendship bracelets in a range of colors and designs. The fan mail landscape in New York theater is alive and well. Across the theater district, stage managers and theater employees collect fan art, stuffed animals and other gifts of appreciation that are sent to stars, ferrying the items to mailboxes and dressing rooms. 'It's so cool that people still send me things after all these years,' said Joey Fatone, the former 'N Sync singer who recently ended his run in the Broadway musical '& Juliet.' He estimated that each week he received about a dozen handwritten letters and several packages, including one containing a track suit emblazoned with '& Joeyet,' a play on his name and the jukebox musical's.
