The Congress, and AAP ‘betrayed Sikhs for decades', says BJP
Both the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had 'betrayed Sikhs for decades', the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) national spokesperson R.P. Singh said on Wednesday (May 28, 2025), while the BJP government in Delhi had provided government jobs to the families of the 1984 anti-Sikh riot victims within 100 days.
'In just 100 days of forming the Delhi government, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has fulfilled a long-pending promise by issuing government job appointment letters to the families of the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. This landmark move comes after decades of betrayal by the Congress, and deliberate neglect by the Aam Aadmi Party,' Mr. Singh said here.
Ahead of the by-election to the Ludhiana West Assembly constituency slated for June 19, the party hopes to garner the support of the Sikhs and make its presence felt in Punjab, where it has not been on a strong foot electorally. The Ludhiana West seat fell vacant following the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January.
'This (the issuance of job letters) is not merely an administrative action, it is a step toward restoring dignity, justice, and rightful compensation to Sikh families who suffered one of the darkest chapters in Indian history. The AAP not only failed to deliver justice to the victims of the 1984 riots but no Sikh was made a Minister in their 10-year rule. On the other hand, the Congress shielded and rewarded the culprits of 1984,' Mr. Singh said.
The BJP has been reiterating decisions it has taken in interests of the Sikhs since 2014, when the Narendra Modi government was formed the government at the Centre. They include the setting up of a Special Investigation Team to probe the cases related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots; the commencement of the Kartarpur Corridor from the Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara in Pakistan to the Dera Baba Nanak shrine in India's Gurdaspur district; the waiver of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on langars (community kitchens); enabling registration under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) for the Gurdwara Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), facilitating the receipt of foreign donations.

US lawmaker under fire for protesting Sikh prayer in Congress
The TOI correspondent from Washington: A racist Republican lawmaker known for making inflammatory statements is under fire after misidentifying a Sikh religious leader as Muslim and declaring he should never have been allowed to deliver the morning prayer in Congress in a country she falsely claimed was "founded as a Christian nation. The remark embarrassed the Republican Party beyond its racist MAGA base, particularly since it was a GOP Congressman who had invited New Jersey granthi Giani Singh to deliver the prayer. "I was proud to invite a Sikh chaplain to open the House with prayer this morning. The Sikh community is peaceful, generous, and deeply rooted in family and service, values we should all appreciate, no matter our religion," New Jersey Congressman Jeff van Drew said, adding, "as a Catholic, I take my faith seriously and I also believe part of being American is respecting other people's faiths too." Miller was also castigated by the Democratic Party, which is more representative of America's changing demographics. 'It's deeply troubling that such an ignorant and hateful extremist is serving in the United States Congress,' House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said on X. 'That would be you, Mary.' Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle and public intellectuals also called out Miller for falsely claiming the US was founded as a Christian nation, a more recent fiction promoted by racist MAGA hardliners. Early Sikhs settled down on the Pacific coast, and many of their descendants are now prosperous and politically influential farmers and business owners in California, a fact recognised by local lawmakers. 'I'm troubled by my colleague's remarks about this morning's Sikh prayer, which have since been deleted,' California Congressman David Valadao, a Republican, wrote on X. 'Throughout the country—and in the Central Valley— Sikh-Americans are valued and respected members of our communities, yet they continue to face harassment and discrimination. There are more than 500,000 Sikhs in the US, according to Sikh Advocacy groups, although the 2020 US census reported only 70,697 respondents identifying as Sikh. Many of them are in California's Central Valley, where some towns have had Sikh mayors and Punjabi is commonly spoken. The GOP also has at least two prominent Sikhs in leadership positions: Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and former Trump campaign legal advisor and US assistant attorney general for the civil rights division Harmeet Dhillon. Dhillon in fact delivered the closing invocation (antim ardas) at the Republican National Convention last year, triggering a backlash from MAGA fundamentalists, one of whom posted this on X: "ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE!! I have nothing but respect for Harmeet Dhillon but fire whoever invited her to pray to a foreign god, there is only one true God we pray to and his name is not whatever she said. Pak Generals Want Conflict To Remain Relevant: Ravi Shankar In Germany
BJP MP and leader of the all-party delegation Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Pakistan's military establishment for supporting terrorism, saying that its Generals want conflicts to remain relevant and use terrorists as a tool to destabilise India. Addressing a community event with the Indian diaspora in Berlin, Prasad pointed out that while both India and Pakistan were born on the same day, the former has made remarkable progress in IT and space, in contrast to Islamabad. "India and Pakistan were born the same day. Where are we in India, and where are they (Pakistan)? India has become a major global IT power in the world. India has become an emerging space power in the world. The startup movements here are now globally recognised. India has also become the second biggest mobile phone manufacturer in the world. We have brought digital transformation with equity and justice," ANI quoted Prasad as saying. Prasad claimed that Pakistan only knows how to prepare world-class terrorists under its military leadership. He said that wherever there is a terrorist, he is either a Pakistani or trained in Pakistan. "What Pakistan is doing is creating terror machines. How to create world-class terrorists under their (military) Generals. They attacked us four times and lost every time. We never attacked; they were the ones who always started the war. It is because they are under the control of Generals and not political leaders. Generals want conflict to keep themselves relevant, and terrorists are the instruments through which they execute. Wherever there is a terrorist, either he is a Pakistani or trained in Pakistan," he added. Prasad also spoke about the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and India's decisive response through Operation Sindoor on May 7, noting that Operation Sindoor remains paused but ready to resume based on Pakistan's actions. "Pahalgam attack happened on April 22. We attacked on May 7 and hit the terrorist camps. If Pakistan has to talk, it must directly speak to us. Our message was stern and straight: If you stop, we stop. If you fire, we will give a stronger reply. Operation Sindoor is on pause, subject to the good behaviour of Pakistan. It has not ended," he stated. An all-party delegation, led by Ravi Shankar Prasad, is currently visiting Germany as part of the Indian government's initiative to engage with key partner nations, including members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to convey India's resolute and united stand against terrorism. This initiative follows the tragic April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 innocent civilians lost their lives to gunfire from terrorists. The Delegation includes BJP MPs Daggubati Purandeswari and Samik Bhattacharya, Congress MP Amar Singh and Gulam Ali Khatana, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, AIADMK MP M Thambidurai, former Union Minister MJ Akbar and former diplomat Pankaj Saran. The delegation arrived in Germany after concluding their visit to Belgium to convey India's resolute and united stand against terrorism.
