SANDAKAN: Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a wood-hulled boat believed to be smuggling controlled items to a neighbouring country without proper declaration documents. Sandakan Maritime Zone Director Muhamad Suhairy Hussain said the vessel was intercepted during a Sunday night operation about 0.8 nautical miles off Tanjung Aru waters.
Advertisement Eight foreign crew members aged between 27 and 50, along with six passengers aged 16 to 41, were onboard and unable to produce valid travel documents. Authorities also discovered a large cargo of controlled goods, including 250 drums of petrol, 15 drums of diesel, and 120 gas cylinders of various brands, worth nearly RM830,000. RANAU: A 42-year-old man died and another was injured after the Perodua Kancil they were travelling in collided with a palm fruit-laden lorry along KM45 of the Ranau-Telupid Road on Sunday. The Fire and Rescue Department said the car, believed to be heading towards Ranau, had veered into the opposite lane before the crash at about 1.15pm. The driver, Sylvester Pius Gulmit, was confirmed dead while receiving treatment at the Paginatan Health Clinic. His 18-year-old passenger sustained minor injuries, including scratches and bruises. JOHOR BARU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a Bridgetown-registered tanker for anchoring without permission in the waters of Tanjung Segenting, Batu Pahat early today. In a statement today, Batu Pahat Maritime Zone director Maritime Commander Mohammad Zaini Zainal said the vessel was intercepted about 12.8 nautical miles southwest of Tanjung Segenting after its captain failed to produce anchoring documents during an inspection at 12.30am. The tanker, en route from Dubai to Vietnam, had earlier called at Port of Tanjung Bruas, Melaka to load 6,894 metric tonnes of tar. It was manned by 18 crew members, including the captain, all Indian nationals aged between 22 and 45, who possessed valid travel documents, he added. The case is being investigated under Section 491B(1)(L) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 for anchoring without the approval of the Malaysian Marine Department director-general. "MMEA will continue to enforce maritime laws and will not hesitate to act against illegal anchoring," Mohammad Zaini said. – Bernama
