Annecy: ‘In Your Dreams' Director Alex Woo Talks Netflix's Animated Epic

Yahoo13-06-2025
Netflix's 'In Your Dreams' is nearly here.
The animated epic, about a pair of siblings (voiced by Jolie Hoang-Rappaport and Elias Janssen), who travel into the world of dreams to find The Sandman, in an effort to have their ultimate wish granted, arrives on the streaming service on Nov. 14. But we got a sneak-peek at the movie at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. You can watch the brand-new trailer below.
TheWrap spoke to 'In Your Dreams' director Alex Woo at the festival, who told us that he first had the idea for a movie about dreams back in 2017, shortly after leaving Pixar. He did the math in his head. 'So, yeah, nine years,' Woo said. He acknowledges that the idea of an animated feature set in the world of dreams had been considered at many animation studios; countless films were developed but never finished. It's an intriguing concept but hard to actualize. Still, Woo persisted.
'I just love the story and I love the characters and I felt like it was a story that was really going to move people,' Woo said, about what kept him going. 'It was going to resonate with people. It would make them laugh and it would make them cry. I think it was just how much I believed in the story and how much I wanted to see it brought to fruition and brought to reality.'
For his team, Woo recruited Steve Pilcher, a Pixar vet who, at the time, was finishing up work on Pete Docter's 'Soul.' Pilcher would be the production designer on the project. 'We have a shared love of a lot of things, and I think I just knew that we had a similar aesthetic and a similar sensibility,' Woo said. 'I called him and I was like, 'Hey man, you want to jump ship and work on this crazy dream?''
Pilcher said that he was seduced by the idea of working for a smaller studio. When Woo pitched the movie, he was flooded with 'so many possibilities.' 'It was another film that was two worlds,' Pilcher said of the similarities between 'Soul' and 'In Your Dreams.' (There was an element of 'Soul' where a part of the astral plane was actually 'dreams.' While the concept was largely removed from the finished movie, Pilcher remembered it.)
In terms of guiding principles for the movie, Woo said, 'I think everything needed to be sincere. We never wanted to put something in the movie that didn't feel like it was one of our authentic experiences. That's when you get into dangerous territory and it goes into cliché is, you're not drawing from something that's connected to who you are or what you've experienced. I don't think there's a single thing we put in there that didn't come from somebody's authentic experience.'
And unlike most major animated movies, Woo said that 'In Your Dreams' never hit a wall and had to be rebuilt from the ground up. Instead, there were small things that were tweaked and reworked. But it mostly stayed the same. 'When I pitched the film to Netflix, I put together a 30-minute beat board pitch. It was the entire shape of the story. And it was a really solid, beautiful pitch,' Woo remembered. 'I don't like going into something if I don't have a really clear idea of how everything works together. And I think, because the pitch was so thought-out and so solid, we got a green light very quickly, and then the script was based off of that outline.'
Sounds like a – wait for it – dream production.
'In Your Dreams' hits Netflix on Nov. 14.

A Fake Musical Act Joins BTS With A Major Chart Win

In the span of only a few weeks, Netflix's animated film KPop Demon Hunters has become not only one of the platform's most successful titles, but a shockingly successful new franchise in the music world. The film's corresponding soundtrack grows in terms of total consumption every week, and the original songs penned for the K-pop musical have reached beyond those who identify as fans of the South Korean musical genre and have now hit the ears of the American public at large. This week, KPop Demon Hunters manages a historic feat on one of Billboard's most important tallies — one which helps even a fictitious group stand apart as incredibly successful. 'Golden' Hits No. 1 on the Hot 100 The No. 1 song in America at the moment is 'Golden,' featured in KPop Demon Hunters. The track is credited to the made-up girl group Huntr/x, which was created for the movie. Also named on the tune are the three actual human vocalists who voiced the smash, Ejae, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami. Less than two months into its time on the Hot 100, 'Golden' lifts from No. 2 to No. 1, and in doing so makes history. 'Golden' is one of fewer than 10 K-pop tracks to rule the Hot 100. Before this frame, no girl group from that genre had ever led the charge, nor any female soloist in the K-pop space. BTS, Jimin and Jung Kook While a handful of different credited acts from the K-pop sphere have reached No. 1, they're all connected. BTS was the first K-pop name to reach the highest rung on the Hot 100. The septet — easily the biggest in the history of the style — has racked up half a dozen champions, including 'Dynamite,' 'Butter,' 'Permission to Dance,' 'Life Goes On,' as well as 'Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat),' a collaboration with Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo, and 'My Universe,' a duet with Coldplay. Two members of BTS have also hit No. 1 on their own. First came Jimin, with 'Like Crazy,' and then months later, Jung Kook repeated the showing alongside rapper Latto with 'Seven.' Both ruled in 2023 with solo smashes. 'Golden' Remains a Sales and Streaming Win The Hot 100 is compiled using a methodology that blends sales, streams, and radio airplay to show which songs are being consumed at the greatest levels throughout the United States. 'Golden' is steady at No. 1 on the Streaming Songs tally, and this frame it jumps from No. 5 to No. 3 on the Digital Song Sales list, hitting a new high point. Luminate reports that in the past tracking week in America, 'Golden' sold a little more than 6,200 copies, up 35% from the period prior. 'Golden' Grows at American Radio The KPop Demon Hunters track also once again leads both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S., as it has now ranked as the biggest song in the world on and off for several frames. In America, the tune is quickly growing at radio, although it has yet to land on Billboard's Radio Songs tally. This frame, in its third turn on the Pop Airplay chart, 'Golden' rockets from No. 28 to No. 20. At the same time, it opens at No. 37 on the Adult Pop Airplay list.

YouTuber Mark Rober is getting a Netflix series

Mark Rober, a former NASA engineer now known for his science-focused stunts he publishes to more than 70 million subscribers on YouTube, will launch a competition show on Netflix in 2026. Rober will also bring 'some of his most beloved, ambitious, and informative experiments to Netflix later this year,' Netflix says. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year that Netflix had talked to Rober. According to that article, Netflix has also had discussions with the creators at Dude Perfect, a channel with more than 60 million YouTube subscribers, about a new series. And earlier this year, Netflix brought videos from Ms. Rachel, known for her videos for toddlers and early education, to its platform. The push from Netflix into bringing on YouTube creators follows the success of MrBeast's Beast Games game show on Prime Video. That show debuted last year and quickly became Prime Video's 'most-watched unscripted show ever.' It has been renewed for two more seasons.
