BJP reshuffle in Gujarat paused amid Pahalgam fallout; but district-level presidents announced
AHMEDABAD: Amid nationwide outrage over the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, political developments in Gujarat have slowed, with the BJP's long-anticipated state-level shake-up now caught in a cloud of uncertainty.
Despite this pause, the party made an unexpected move on Tuesday by announcing new district-level presidents, signalling selective progress in its internal restructuring.
Delhi has become the epicentre of high-level political activity, as pressure mounts on Pakistan following the Pahalgam incident. In Gujarat, however, all eyes remain on two major questions: who will be the next BJP state president, and when will the long-delayed cabinet expansion take place?
Over the past fortnight, speculation surged after Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on 21 April. A day later, BJP state chief C.R. Patil held a closed-door meeting with Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav, further fuelling rumours of imminent changes.
The BJP was reportedly considering a young OBC leader for the state president's post, but sources now say the terror attack has 'shifted the narrative'. Despite the expiration of Patil's term, he is expected to remain in his role until political conditions stabilise.
Plans to expand the Gujarat cabinet, with ministerial berths for ex-Congress members who switched to the BJP, have also been put on hold indefinitely. 'Given the current national climate, the cabinet expansion will not proceed anytime soon,' said a party source.
In a move that caught many by surprise, the BJP announced new district-level appointments on Tuesday. New presidents were named for Ahmedabad city, Gandhinagar, Kheda, Porbandar and Vadodara, indicating that while state-level decisions remain in limbo, the party is not shying away from recalibrating local leadership.
The swift succession of high-level meetings in Delhi has kept Gujarat's political circles on edge. For now, the BJP's larger reshuffle remains on standby—its course altered by national developments beyond the state's borders.

#SelfieWithDaughter: 10 years of rural click that appealed to global audience
On June 9, 2015, the world witnessed the birth of the now-iconic hashtag #SelfieWithDaughter. What started as a local initiative in Bibipur village of Jind district of Haryana, soon managed to capture global attention. Aiming to promote gender equality, the campaign raises awareness about ills, including female foeticide. Now, 10 years later, more than 2 lakh social media posts and thousands of news articles now carry a phrase that didn't exist in headlines before 2015. The movement reshaped conversations on gender -- both online and offline, and resonated so strongly that Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised it in his Mann Ki Baat radio address in July 2015. PM Modi applauded Sunil Jaglan, a young sarpanch and the spirit behind #SelfieWithDaughter. During a conversation with HT, Jaglan said that #SelfieWithDaughter is no longer a campaign, but a social movement and a commitment by society. 'So far, we have taken some bold steps as a foundation for the campaign. We introduced 'Lado Panchayat'. The traditional khap panchayats were male-only councils, and for the first time, women were invited to the table, and the council came together to publicly condemn sex-selective abortion — a powerful shift in a deeply patriarchal setting. We also brought up 'women's happiness charts' to monitor the well-being of females in homes, and created 'Balika Sabha' (girls' assemblies) to give young girls a platform to speak, share and be heard,' he said. Under Sunil as sarpanch, a resolution was also passed to ban the use of abusive language against women that was known as 'Gali band ghar'. 'The campaign gained strong community support and had a significant positive impact — for the first time, such incidents were openly discussed in the gram sabha, and those who used abusive language were held accountable. We have touched every perspective,' he added. Jaglan said that families have now started celebrating their daughters, sharing positive stories and images that brought a sense of unity and optimism in a time of crisis. 'Now people are taking this as a commitment and investing in health, education and financial independence of their daughters. Now, people have started making 'period chart' for the women of their families. So far, two lakh plates with daughter's name have been put outside homes. This is the real result and future of #SelfieWithDaughter,' he said. Despite initiatives like #SelfieWithDaughter and 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' -- that also started from Haryana a decade ago -- the sex ratio at birth still remains a challenge in the state. The sex ratio at birth (SRB) is a critical indicator of gender equality. According to the figures from the Civil Registration System (CRS) up to December 2024, Haryana recorded its lowest sex ratio at birth in eight years in 2024 and registered a six-point drop from figures a year ago. The SRB dipped to 910 female births per 1,000 male births in 2024, a six-points drop from 916 in 2023 and the lowest after 2016, when it stood at 900. Government interventions have been undertaken largely—crackdowns on illegal sex determination clinics, strict enforcement of the PCPNDT Act, authorities have this year seized about 8,800 MTP kits and registered over 50 FIRs, including at least 18 against online sellers of the kits, but a lot still needs to be done. Vijender Singh, an assistant professor with the department of sociology, Kurukshetra University, believes that there has been a lot of awareness regarding equality in the society, but what lacks is enough incentivisation to classes other than lower strata. 'Government needs to expand its incentives in the middle and higher section of the society. These sections are aware with the issues and problems arising out of it, but shy away due to lack of incentives that are limited only to those below a certain income level,' he added.

Ludhiana: E-rickshaws with jingles buzz through bypoll campaigns
At a time when candidates are dabbling with reels, hashtags, digital filters, and social media platforms to lure voters; several political parties in Ludhiana West have roped into a more traditional, yet creative, approach, e-rickshaws fitted with loudspeakers playing catchy campaign jingles and rhyming slogans. These battery-operated vehicles are being used as mobile platforms to promote candidates and connect with residents in a more engaging and accessible manner. The jingles, mostly written in Punjabi and set to familiar tunes, include the candidate's name, party symbol, subtle jibes at opponents, and promises of development. So far, parties like the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have adopted this method for street campaigning, while Congress and others are yet to follow suit. Shedding light on the trend, Vikram Anand, owner of Khushi Advertisers, a firm that composes and records these jingles for political campaigns, said, 'Political parties approach us with slogans and key points they want highlighted. Based on that, we compose jingles in a catchy meter with rhyming sentences that reflect their message.' Anand noted the costing model as well, by stating, 'We charge around ₹1,000 per e-rickshaw. Out of this, ₹300 is for recording the message, ₹400 covers the flags and banners, and the remaining ₹300 goes to the driver.' He added that once candidates receive permission letter from the Election Commission to use e-rickshaws for campaigning, his firm provides the fully equipped vehicles within 24 hours. 'These musical rickshaws are a creative way to connect with people. They help spread the message even when candidates are busy with door-to-door visits and public meetings,' Anand noted. In recent days, streets across Ludhiana West have been buzzing with these campaign songs. BJP's rickshaws, decked with party flags and sound systems, have been using terms like 'Lotu Tola' in reference to the Aam Aadmi Party, urging voters to back local leadership instead of 'outsiders from Delhi.' On the other hand, e-rickshaws promoting AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora are playing jingles like 'Na gussa na ahankaar, badhegi vikas di raftaar,' encouraging voters to support the ruling party for fast paced development in the West constituency.
