Penang chosen as filming spot for Miss HK Pageant 2025, joined by TVB stars

For the first time ever, the Miss Hong Kong Pageant 2025 is filming in Penang, marking a milestone for both the long-running beauty contest and Malaysia.
On Friday (Aug 1), all 14 finalists – elegantly dressed in white – turned heads as they made an appearance at City Hall in George Town, drawing curious onlookers and media attention.
Over the coming days, the contestants will be exploring some of Penang's most iconic sites, filming across scenic backdrops including seaside views and cultural landmarks.
According to state tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, the shoot is part of a collaborative effort between the Penang State Government and TVB.
Airing weekly to over 5.1 million in-home viewers in Hong Kong, the pageant is expected to not only promote Penang's cultural richness on a global stage but also enhance its appeal as a premier destination for international television and film productions.
'Through the lens and journey of the contestants, the Miss Hong Kong Pageant 2025 will offer global audiences an immersive glimpse into Penang's breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage and contemporary charm.
'More than just a pageant, this production will serve as a tourism promotion that breathes new life, imagination and inspiration into Penang's tourism brand,' said Wong in a statement.
Joining the contestants are award-winning TVB actor Benjamin Yuen and 2013 Miss Hong Kong second runner-up Moon Lau.
'Their joint appearance in this production not only adds to the star power of the programme, but also further elevates Penang's screen visibility,' Wong added.

KUALA LUMPUR: Renowned composer and musician Ross Ariffin, who previously made headlines after it was discovered he had been living as a homeless person, has died. He was 63. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil shared news of his passing in a Facebook post earlier today. "I am deeply saddened by the passing of our national artiste, Ross Ariffin, this afternoon. "The news was conveyed by Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheras, where the late Ross had been living since November last year. "Uncle Ross was a composer who made significant contributions to the local music industry," he wrote. More details about Ross's passing are still being gathered. Fahmi said he had met Ross several times during his lifetime. "He faced many life challenges, yet remained resilient in his artistic journey. "May his soul be blessed and placed among the righteous… Al-Fatihah," he added. On 8 June last year, Berita Harian reported a meeting between Fahmi and Ross, who was then living in a People's Housing Project (PPR) flat in Kampung Muhibbah, provided by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), after his story of living on the streets went viral. At the time, Ross, who had been in the PPR unit for three months, said he was enjoying the new community environment. During the visit, Fahmi also handed Ross a keyboard to help him continue composing music. Ross, who once played violin in an orchestra in London, composed songs for several of Malaysia's top artistes, including Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza, Datuk Aishah, Liza Aziz, Jaclyn Victor and Fauziah Latiff. Among his popular compositions are Dia by Fauziah, Kemaafan Dendam Yang Terindah by Aishah, and Kau dan Aku by Ning Baizura, which won the Anugerah Juara Lagu (Champion Song Awards) in the Pop Rock category in 1995.

Outdoor filming began at City Hall and the Esplanade seafront here yesterday, with additional shoots scheduled at several well-known attractions until Monday. The 14 finalists will wear traditional Nyonya attire and participate in a swimsuit segment, with local cuisine tasting sessions included in the itinerary. TVB stars Benjamin Yuen Wai-ho and Moon Lau Pui-yuet are also in town, joining the shoot as special guests. Yuen, who won the Mr Hong Kong title 17 years ago, hoped the contestants would enjoy the experience despite the tight schedule and challenges. 'The process will be tough and challenging, but it will be valuable for growth and learning,' he said. Yuen added he was glad to be part of the shoot and looked forward to relaxing and sampling local food. Lau, who was crowned second runner-up in the Miss Hong Kong Pageant 2013, said the contestants should not shy away from expressing themselves. 'Since I do not have to participate in the swimsuit segment, I will gladly 'take on' more of the local food on behalf of the contestants,' she said jokingly when met outside the City Hall yesterday. Welcoming them on-site was Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai. Also present were Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng, Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan, Berapit assemblyman Heng Lee Lee and Penang Global Tourism chief executive officer Ooi Chok Yan. Wong said the state's global visibility would be enhanced through the lens of a major Chinese-language entertainment brand. He said the Miss Hong Kong pageant, which began in 1946 and organised by TVB since 1973, is one of the most recognised beauty contests in the Chinese-speaking world. 'Its decision to film in Penang shows the state's growing appeal as an international filming destination. 'This is a historic moment. We see it as a chance to showcase Penang's cultural depth and modern appeal to audiences worldwide,' he was quoted as saying by state publisher Buletin Mutiara. Wong said the filming was made possible through collaboration between the Penang government and Hong Kong-based budget airline HK Express, following several weeks of discussions. He added that HK Express would double its daily flights between Hong Kong and Penang starting Oct 26. This followed a promotional campaign in late June, when Wong led a Penang delegation to Hong Kong under the theme 'Penang: Not the Penang You Know' to showcase the state's diverse cultural and tourism offerings.

Tanjong Katong sinkhole: Singapore says affected road will open progressively to motorists from noon on Saturday (Aug 2)

Announcing this in a Facebook post on Aug 1, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said the affected stretch will open gradually – with the section from East Coast Parkway (ECP) to Mountbatten Road opening from noon on Aug 2, while the opposite bound from Mountbatten Road to ECP will open later from 5am on Aug 4. LTA and national water agency PUB have completed repair works and an assessment of the safety of the affected road sections along Tanjong Katong Road South and the surrounding roads. These checks, conducted in consultation with the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), have confirmed that these roads are safe to use, added LTA. The sinkhole formed near a PUB construction site with sewer laying works. LTA said bus services 36 and 48, which were temporarily diverted, will return to plying their usual routes eastwards towards Changi Airport and Bedok from noon on Aug 2. It noted that these bus services will resume taking their original routes westwards towards the city via ECP, and serve all affected bus stops along Tanjong Katong Road South, Mountbatten, Amber and Marine Parade Roads from the start of operations on Aug 4. Adding that road reinstatement works are still under way, LTA said motorists may continue to see works taking place in the area. These will include repairs to underground utilities or laying of new utilities to replace damaged ones after the roads have reopened. Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu said in a Facebook post on Aug 1 that the authorities have been working around the clock to make the road safe again by carrying out extensive tests such as ground scans and stability checks. 'I have been assured that the road will be safe for public use,' she said. LTA said rigorous tests were carried out to assess the condition of the ground, such as probing to check for voids or weak ground, ground-penetrating radar surveys to detect abnormalities below ground, and seismic surveys to map the density and stability of underground layers. It added that these tests did not detect any anomalies or voids within the area. Fu added: 'I thank all residents and motorists for your patience and understanding. This has allowed us to complete the necessary safety checks, assessment and repairs.' The sinkhole appeared in Tanjong Katong Road South on the evening of July 26, causing a car and its driver to fall in. The driver was rescued by workers on-site and was taken conscious to hospital. It was previously reported that she was experiencing muscular pains, and was still recovering in hospital as at July 29. The Straits Times has asked PUB for an update on the driver's condition. On July 27, the badly damaged car was hoisted out of the sinkhole. The sinkhole was refilled early on July 28 with liquefied stabilised soil, which is made of soil, cement and water. Works to test the ground were carried out thereafter. On July 29, Fu apologised to the injured driver as well as those inconvenienced on behalf of her ministry and PUB, adding that the incident should not have happened. BCA will conduct an independent probe into the incident, while the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment will carry out an internal investigation. - The Straits Times/ANN
