IBT, a 3-decade-old dream come true
: When chief minister
M K Stalin
inaugurates the Rs246 crore
Integrated Bus Terminus
(IBT) at Panjapur on Friday, it will be the realisation of a three-decade-old demand of Trichiites.
TNSTC
can heave a sigh of relief as the new terminus will replace the cramped Central bus stand. The CM would flag off 120 new
BS VI standard vehicles
, of which 18 belong to Coimbatore and Villupuram TNSTC units.
Among these, 38 are city buses, which will replace the old ones operated from Trichy city.Authorities said shifting of bus operations from Central and Chathiram bus stands to Panjapur would take time, and could be taken up gradually. This is expected only after ensuring that all amenities including restaurants are available in the complex. "IBT is the city's dream project, the facility should be maintained properly by eliminating threats of encroachments including pushcarts near the terminus," Dr M A Aleem, member, Trichy district welfare fund committee, said.

"Around 92 new mofussil buses will be flagged off by the CM during the launch. Low-floor buses will be allocated to Trichy and Thanjavur cities in our division. Around 34 such swanky buses for city operations can be expected by next month," R Ponmudi, managing director, TNSTC Kumbakonam, told TOI.The idea of a new bus terminus germinated in the 1990s when the Central bus stand was found incapable of handling the fleets then. Soon after Trichy municipality was elevated as a municipal corporation in 1994, the demand for a spacious bus terminus was placed before the then mayor, Punithavalli Palaniyandi. Over the years, places such as Karur bypass road, Devathanam, Ariyamangalam, and Kottapattu were front runners for the IBT project. However, Panjapur was finalised by the DMK govt in May 2021. "Karur bypass road site was not considered seriously. Other sites such as Devathanam, Ariyamangalam, and Kottapattu were found technically unviable over the years," K Suresh, councillor, said.

Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin on Tuesday launched Muthalvarin Kaakkum Karangal (CM's Protective Hands) scheme to support livelihood of ex-servicemen and also handed over appointment orders to newly recruited assistant engineers in highways department. At the Secretariat, Stalin handed over sanction orders to 15 ex-servicemen, marking the rollout of assistance to 155 veterans to start businesses. The scheme, announced in his 2024 Independence Day address, has an outlay of 24.43crore. In its first phase, 348 ex-servicemen and their families will benefit, with a total cost of 50.5crore. Under the scheme, veterans can avail bank loans up to 1crore with 30% capital subsidy and 3% interest subsidy. Applications will be screened by district-level committees headed by collectors. Based on their approval, banks will issue provisional sanction orders. Beneficiaries will undergo entrepreneurship training at state's Entrepreneurship Development and Innovation Institute in Chennai, after which final loan sanction will be given. The scheme will later be scaled up to benefit 500 more veterans. State govt currently provides a range of welfare measures for ex-servicemen, including stipend support for children, ex-gratia jobs for dependents of those killed in action, re-employment assistance, and educational reservations. Indias Rs 62,000 Crore Indigenous Fighter Jet Push: Govt Clears Deal To Buy 97 LCA Tejas Mark 1A Combat Jets
In a major boost to indigenous defence manufacturing, the Government of India on Tuesday approved the purchase of 97 more LCA Tejas Mark 1A fighter jets for the Indian Air Force. This decision comes at a time when the Air Force is phasing out its ageing MiG-21 fleet and playing a key role in large-scale military exercises like Operation Sindoor. The clearance was given during a high-level government meeting and will now allow Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to begin production, defence officials told ANI. Second Big Order for Tejas Jets This is the second major order for Tejas Mark 1A aircraft. The first order for 83 jets was placed a few years ago at a cost of around Rs 48,000 crore. Together, these jets will form a crucial part of the Air Force's future fleet as the MiG-21s are finally being retired in the coming weeks. Also Read: '6 Pak Aircraft Were Downed During Operation Sindoor': Air Force Chief Praises S-400 System Boost for 'Make in India' The Tejas programme has strong backing from both the Ministry of Defence and Air Force Headquarters. It's seen as not just a military upgrade, but also a big push under the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. The project will benefit hundreds of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) involved in manufacturing defence components across India. PM Modi's Personal Support Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been a key supporter of HAL and India's defence manufacturing capabilities. He even flew in a trainer version of the Tejas — becoming the first Indian Prime Minister ever to fly in a combat aircraft. The idea of acquiring 97 more jets was first shared by former Air Force Chief, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, during his visit to Spain. The aircraft is considered a symbol of India's growing self-reliance in aerospace and defence technology. What's Next? HAL is also expected to receive additional orders in the near future — including over 200 Tejas Mark 2 jets and a large order for India's upcoming fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).

‘Dramatic Reset': Expert Shares Inside Story Of What Forced Modi To Turn Towards China After 5-Year Chill
India and China have been working to mend their ties. All of a sudden, ministers and officials from each country are visiting each other and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is making a visit to Beijing after seven years. Ahead of PM Modi's visit, China lifted curbs on the export of rare earth minerals, fertilisers and other commodities, signalling a willingness to boost trade ties. Amid this unprecedented rebuilding exercise, a foreign policy expert has shared key insights on what led to the dramatic change in India's diplomatic approach. Dramatic Shift In India-China Ties Speaking to Bloomberg, Rockefeller International Chairman Ruchir Sharma claimed that only a few months ago, PM Modi was categorically saying that he wanted nothing to do with China and all of a sudden, India is now engaging with China at the highest level. 'India is seeing a dramatic reset with China. Till about three or four months ago, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi was very categorical when he would meet people, in saying how let down he felt by China and Xi Jinping. PM Modi was privately telling people he wanted nothing to do with China,' said Sharma. Sharma further claimed that Prime Minister Modi tried his best to form a relationship with China when Xi Jinping visited India in 2019. 'Modi felt very let down personally about what China did in terms of the border dispute and other issues. The same was reinforced by the Indo-Pak conflict, which took place during Operation Sindoor, where Pakistan used extensively weapons supplied by China. That was a really low point in the ties,' Sharma told Bloomberg Insights, adding that the reset has been a 'complete pivot' in terms of what 'Modi has been forced to do'. Why Modi Turned To China? Sharing details about the dramatic policy shift, Sharma credited it to PM Modi's deteriorating ties with US President Donald Trump. 'Modi is doing this because of the fact that the way he's fallen out with Trump that the two of them were extremely close during the first term of Trump,' said Sharma. He further claimed that during the US presidential polls in 2024, PM Modi was set to meet Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in September. However, since the meeting with Harris was cancelled, the meeting with Trump was also terminated so as not to appear close to any one candidate. Sharma claimed that this irked Trump and recently, when India did not endorse Trump's ceasefire claim, the personal ties between Modi and Trump went downhill. Time For China To Rebuild Trust The expert further said that many countries still do not trust China, and since many nations are under pressure by the United States, it could be the right time for Beijing to step-in in the right direction. 'A lot of countries in Asia do not trust China. It is up to China to rise to the occasion with India and other nations. It has to build ties at a time when many countries are feeling pressured by America,' said Sharma.
