NFL kicks off preseason with moment of silence after shooting that killed 4 people in New York

Associated Press21 hours ago
CANTON, Ohio (AP) — The NFL season kicked off at the annual Hall of Fame game Thursday night with a moment of silence for the four people killed earlier this week by a shooter who was targeting league headquarters in New York.
The gunman also wounded a league employee in the shooting Monday night. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told NBC he visited the employee for an hour on Wednesday and said he was improving.
There was increased security around Tom Benson Stadium, where Eric Allen, Jared Allen, Antonio Gates and Sterling Sharpe will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.
'That's real life and it's unfortunate that we live in a space right now that's a possibility and it's becoming a situation where if you're a parent, that's the first thing you think about is workplace safety for your child or for your loved ones,' Eric Allen told The Associated Press. 'And for it to specifically be the National Football League, the opening week is tonight, Hall of Fame is Saturday, and the game has made so many great strides, but it's just an example of there's still work to be done.'
The league held a virtual town hall Wednesday, giving employees an opportunity to connect and share resources. Goodell told employees on Tuesday they could work remotely at least through the end of next week because league offices would be closed.
Investigators believe Shane Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, was trying to get to the NFL offices after shooting several people in the building's lobby, then another in a 33rd-floor office on Monday, before he killed himself, authorities said.
Police said Tamura had a history of mental illness, and a rambling note found on his body suggested that he had a grievance against the NFL over a claim that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease that can be diagnosed only by examining the brain after a person dies.
Tamura played high school football in California a decade ago but never in the NFL.

Cade Horton tosses 2-hit ball over 5 innings as Cubs beat Orioles 1-0

CHICAGO (AP) — Rookie Cade Horton tossed two-hit ball over five innings, and the Chicago Cubs overcame a terrific start by Trevor Rogers to beat the Baltimore Orioles 1-0 on Friday. The Cubs showed a video tribute of Ryne Sandberg and held 23 seconds of silence prior to their first home game since the Hall of Famer died. Former teammates Shawon Dunston, Jody Davis and Rick Sutcliffe then honored their friend by carrying a base onto the field and placing it at second. A few hours earlier, Commissioner Rob Manfred announced the 2027 All-Star Game will be held at Wrigley Field during a news conference at home plate with Chicago Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts, Gov. JB Pritzker and mayor Brandon Johnson. Ian Happ hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning against Rogers, and the Cubs started the weekend series on a winning note after losing two of three at Milwaukee. They began the day trailing the NL Central-leading Brewers by one game. Horton (5-3) delivered his third straight scoreless outing. Caleb Thielbar, newcomer Andrew Kittredge and Brad Keller each worked an inning. Daniel Palencia pitched around a two-out double by Adley Rutschman in the ninth, retiring Tyler O'Neill on a fly to deep left for his 15th save in 16 chances. Rogers (4-2) was a tough-luck loser for Baltimore. The left-hander matched a career high by going eight innings and allowed one run and four hits. He struck out eight and walked none. Key moment Carson Kelly singled leading off the second, took third on Pete Crow-Armstrong's double to deep center and scored on Happ's sacrifice fly. Key stat Horton has gone 17 2/3 innings without allowing a run. Up next The Cubs send All-Star LHP Matthew Boyd (11-4, 2.47 ERA) to the mound, and the Orioles go with RHP Tomoyuki Sugano (8-5, 4.38). ___ AP MLB:

Browns quarterback Kenny Pickett returns to the practice field after hamstring injury

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Quarterback Kenny Pickett returned to the field for the Cleveland Browns on Friday after missing three practices because of a hamstring injury. Pickett did only individual work and did not participate in any team drills. It was still a step forward for the four-year veteran, who was expected to be out at least a week after getting hurt during a red-zone drill late in practice on July 26. 'Disappointed that he's not full go, but he's very much involved in everything we're doing,' coach Kevin Stefanski said. Pickett is vying with Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders for the starting quarterback spot. Cleveland opens the season on Sept. 7 against Cincinnati. The Browns have three more practices scheduled before traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina, for a joint practice with the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday. Stefanski did not say if he anticipated Pickett would be full go for the joint workout. During the first four practices of training camp, Pickett and Flacco received most of the snaps with the first team. Even though Flacco has experience with the Browns after leading them to a playoff spot in 2023, Stefanski is eager to see what Pickett can do. The coaching staff likes Pickett's mobility and ability to create plays on the run. Pickett was acquired from Philadelphia in March. A 2022 first-round draft selection by Pittsburgh, Pickett has 25 career starts with 15 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Stefanski did not say if he anticipated narrowing the quarterback field before he got to Carolina for the joint workouts and the first preseason game on Aug. 8. If Pickett is healthy, it is likely he and Flacco would get the work in the joint workouts, with Gabriel and Sanders then playing in the preseason game. 'I think for all of our positions, every single day is an important part of getting ready for the season and part of the evaluation. All of it is in an effort to get ready for Week 1 and evaluate our players," Stefanski said. ___ AP NFL:

Manhunt launched after 4 killed in a shooting at a Montana bar

Montana Shooting ANACONDA, Mont. (AP) — Four people were killed in a shooting at a Montana bar Friday, authorities said as they launched a manhunt for the suspect. The suspect was last seen in the Stump Town area, which is just west of Anaconda, according to a Facebook post by the Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Law Enforcement Center. He was believed to still be armed, the Montana Highway Patrol said in a statement. The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. on Friday at The Owl Bar, according to the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, which is leading the investigation. The agency confirmed four people were pronounced dead at the scene and that it was an active investigation. Authorities have yet to release details about what led to the shooting. More than a dozen officers from local and state police converged on Stump Town where they appeared to be searching for the suspect in the woods. His home in Anaconda had already been cleared by a SWAT team, according to the Granite County Sheriff's office. Anaconda is about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of Missoula. The owner of the Firefly Café in Anaconda said she locked up her business at about 11 a.m. Friday after getting alerted to the shooting by a friend. Two hours later, she was still waiting for an all clear before reopening. 'We are Montana, so guns are not new to us. For our town to be locked down, everybody's pretty rattled,' café owner Barbie Nelson said. 'It's a small town, so we all probably know someone who was there' at the shooting. she added.
