Viscount Matt Ridley, a hereditary peer in the House of Lords and science writer, told The Sun: "It smacks of desperation.
"They can feel the net closing in - that it's more and more obvious that it was reckless and
pointless
experiments at the Wuhan Institute of Virology that caused this.
"The coincidence is bizarre that it should turn up in that city of all places.
"I think it's almost certainly a response to the web page. I think the timing suggests that they are rattled - that they felt they needed to respond to the White House.

"It suggests that they have given up on their theory that it got there on

food. That used to be their preferred theory.
"I've read the brief announcement - it seems to be extremely threadbare. There's a lot of faulty logic. We know Covid-19 tests can give false positives."
Lord David Alton, a member of the House of Lords, told The Sun: "When it comes to disinformation the Chinese Communist Party is in a class of its own.
"Over 7 million people died from Covid and millions more have suffered from its consequences.

Now, in a fresh propaganda push, Beijing insists "substantial evidence" shows Covid "might have emerged in the United States earlier than its officially-claimed timeline, and earlier than the outbreak in China".
The document - titled Covid-19 Prevention, Control and Origins Tracing: China's Actions and Stance - was released via China's official Xinhua news agency.
It unashamedly accused the US of "indifference and delayed actions" during the global Covid fight - and of scapegoating China to deflect from its own "mismanaged" response.
It wrote: "The US has made China the primary scapegoat for its own mismanaged COVID-19 response."
The report added that America was 'spreading misinformation' and wasted 'precious time China had secured for the global fight against the pandemic".
It revived Beijing's long-standing claims that it shared information with the world in a "timely manner".
The paper added: 'The US should not continue to 'pretend to be deaf and dumb', but should respond to the legitimate concerns of the international community.'

Our documentary took me to the heart of the origins of Covid and explores whether China was trying to cover up the creation of a biological weapon by blaming the pandemic on a wet food market 17 miles away.
We also reveal that, while scientists publicly insisted the disease came from 'natural' sources, behind the scenes they were exchanging messages about a laboratory leak.
One expert told us: 'Watergate was nothing compared to this.
'This is the Chernobyl of biology.'
Dr Robert Redfield, the former head of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said that a few months before the pandemic, the Wuhan Institute was taken over by the Chinese military while officials deleted its databases and took on a contract for a new ventilation system.
We now know that three lab researchers fell ill in November 2019 — a month before the first Covid cases were reported to the World Health Organisation.

The man picked by Beijing as the second highest figure in Tibetan Buddhism pledged adherence to the ruling Communist Party's dictates on Friday during a rare face-to-face meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Gyaltsen Norbu, who is rarely seen in public, met behind closed doors with Mr Xi in Zhongnanhai, the government compound in the centre of Beijing, about 2,300 miles from his home monastery of Tashilhumpo, high on the Tibetan steppe. The Chinese-appointed Panchen Lama was quoted on Friday by Xinhua as saying he would 'contribute to promoting national unity and progress, systematically promote the sinicisation of religion in China, and promote the modernisation of Tibet'. Mr Xi's government uses the term 'sinicisation' to mean that all religions including Christianity and Islam must take their orders from the Communist Party, reduce their non-Chinese aspects and limit their role in society. Last month, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a statement marking the 30th anniversary of the disappearance of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, saying he and his family had been abducted by the Chinese government. 'Chinese authorities should release Gedhun Choekyi Nyima immediately and stop persecuting Tibetans for their religious beliefs,' Mr Rubio's statement read. The position of Panchen Lama is especially sensitive since he is expected to take part in the recognition of a new Dalai Lama and serve as his tutor, a religious process that the officially atheist Communist Party is determined to control. The meeting on Friday also reflected Mr Xi's focus on economic and political stability within China's borders, where an economic slump has raised concerns of anti-government outbursts and control over minority groups is an overwhelming obsession.

Insiders told The Sun the shocking spike in executions comes amid a barbaric attempt from leaders to crush dissent and act as a warning against it. "Formal steps like prosecution, indictment, and trial are mere facades. Every detail, from A to Z, is orchestrated by these security agencies." "These so-called 'judges don't even read the actual files," he said. "The accused's family is summoned and threatened: if your loved one does not repent, if they do not write a confession, if they do not seek a pardon - then execution is inevitable, and nothing can stop it," he said. "If the execution happens, the blame lies with them—and with you. Ireland added to ‘monitoring list' of countries watched closely around US dollar manipulation
No major US trading partner manipulated its currency in 2024, the Treasury Department said on Thursday in the first semi-annual currency report of President Donald Trump's new administration, although its "monitoring list" of countries warranting close attention grew to nine with the addition of Ireland and Switzerland. Countries that meet two of the criteria - a trade surplus with the US of at least $15 billion, a global account surplus above 3pc of GDP and persistent, one-way net foreign exchange purchases - are automatically added to the list. Ireland and Switzerland were added due to their large trade and current account surpluses with the US. The Swiss National Bank on Friday denied being a currency manipulator, but said it would continue to act in Switzerland's interests as the strong Swiss franc helped push inflation into negative terrain last month. "The SNB does not engage in any manipulation of the Swiss franc," it said. "It does not seek to prevent adjustments in the balance of trade or to gain unfair competitive advantages for the Swiss economy." Treasury said China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam, Germany, Ireland and Switzerland were on its monitoring list for extra foreign exchange scrutiny. While it did not label China a currency manipulator for now despite "depreciation pressure" facing its currency, the yuan, Treasury issued a stern warning to China, saying it "stands out among our major trading partners in its lack of transparency around its exchange rate policies and practices." "This lack of transparency will not preclude Treasury from designating China if available evidence suggests that it is intervening through formal or informal channels to resist (yuan) appreciation in the future," Treasury said in a statement. Trump in his first term labelled China a manipulator in August 2019, a move made then - as now - amid heightened US-China trade tensions. The Treasury Department dropped the designation in January 2020 as Chinese officials arrived in Washington to sign a trade deal with the US. Thursday's report was released hours after Trump spoke with China's leader Xi Jinping for the first time since returning to the White House amid an even more tense trade standoff between the world's two largest economies, and more recently a battle over critical minerals. The countries struck a 90-day deal on May 12 to roll back some of the triple-digit, tit-for-tat tariffs they had placed on each other since Trump's January inauguration. The latest report covers the final full year of the administration of Trump's predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden, who over his four-year term never labelled any trading partner a currency manipulator but raised similar concerns over China's behaviour and lack of transparency. Last year was marked generally by broad-based dollar strengthening, with the greenback gaining 7pc in 2024 against a basket of major trading partners' currencies. That dynamic made it less likely that Treasury would find evidence of consistent one-way actions by countries to weaken their currencies for competitive advantage, since most currencies were broadly weakening anyway, Treasury officials said. That could change over the course of this year, with the dollar already down by roughly 9pc since Trump returned to the White House and launched a trade war that has global investors rethinking their commitments to US assets. In the current environment, it might be more tempting for countries to step in to try to prevent or reverse the continued strengthening of their currencies, and Treasury officials said they would be watching closely for such behaviour. In the case of China more specifically, Treasury officials said they were looking at broadening their surveillance to include monitoring of the activities of sovereign wealth and state pension funds for any indication these entities were acting on Beijing's behest in the foreign exchange market. They said there was no current evidence of that but it had been a tactic used by others in the past.
