Bersatu poster boy better, even with PAS leading PN, says analyst
PETALING JAYA : Rotating the Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairmanship will pave the way for PAS to lead the coalition, but the pact's poster boy for the 16th general election is still likely to come from Bersatu, an analyst says.
Mazlan Ali said a Bersatu representative might be better suited as the prime ministerial candidate in efforts to win over non-Malay voters – a key demographic which PN consistently struggled to attract in past elections.
The Universiti Teknologi Malaysia academic said that PAS continued to be viewed by non-Malay voters as a conservative party due to its Malay-Muslim narrative.
'The chances of PAS leading PN are slim. Even though there have been suggestions that PAS could take the lead, I believe the PN chairman and poster boy should come from Bersatu.
'If PAS leads the coalition, it's unlikely to broaden PN's appeal among non-Malay voters because the party is closely associated with a Malay-Muslim agenda,' he told FMT.
It was recently reported that PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin had offered PAS his role under a leadership rotation plan.
However, the offer was declined by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, who reportedly expressed full support for Muhyiddin to remain at the helm.
Universiti Malaya analyst Tawfik Yaakub said PN's leadership structure needed a revamp to better connect with non-Malay voters.
He said one possible approach was to reach out to Barisan Nasional component parties such as MCA and MIC.
He said PN needed to strengthen the influence of Indian and Chinese parties within the coalition, as efforts through the Malaysian Indian People's Party (MIPP) and Gerakan had largely fallen flat.
'MIPP and Gerakan function more as token component parties to check boxes in PN. The coalition should bring MCA and MIC into the fold – only then can its strategy to win over non-Malay voters begin to materialise,' he said.

Fadillah: Federal govt allocates RM8.79b to roll out 86 projects under 12MP in Sabah
KOTA KINABALU, July 14 — The federal government, through the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra), has allocated RM8.79 billion until June 2025 to implement 86 development projects in Sabah. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, stated that the total allocation will be disbursed under the Fifth Rolling Plan (RP5) of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP). 'Sabah has received a fairly large allocation from the federal government ... it is our commitment to resolve two key issues in Sabah: water and energy. 'Because without energy and water, there can be no economic growth in Sabah,' he said when speaking at the Petra Engagement Session with Sabah Media in 2025 here last night. He said the Madani government is always striving to ensure that Sabah continues to prosper together as a big Malaysian family. Therefore, Sabah's progress is not only the responsibility of this state, but of the entire nation. 'With strong federal-state relations, we can build a more prosperous, just as well as sustainable state and country, with the support of a free and trustworthy media and a united people,' he said. Meanwhile, Fadillah also said the engagement session was intended as a platform for the media to better understand the role of Petra and agencies under its auspices. 'We organised this session to foster closer ties and strengthen the relationship between the media and Petra's top management,' he added. — Bernama

'Turun Anwar rally is more significant than ICERD protest for it concerns bread and butter, survival matters'
FORMER UMNO supreme council member Isham Jalil seems to have struck the chord with many man-on-the-street Malaysians as he rallied 'original UMNO' members to turn up in full force at the July 26 Turun Anwar gathering in Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur. His killer line that has inadvertently enabled the PAS-initiated rally gained even more momentum was that the issues to be raised at the Turun Anwar rally 'are of the same proportion if not bigger than ICERD' for they revolve around the livelihood and well-being of every ordinary Malaysian. 'At least the issues raised during ICERD only centred on our identity and had no bearing on bread and butter matters such as how to put food on the table,' he articulated with zest in a Facebook video which has since fetched 25K likes, 1.9K comments, 3.2K shares and 435K views. '(The) current leaders couldn't care less, they go overseas negotiate while the country is saddled with billions in debts.' The former UMNO information chief who was fired from the party on Dec 7, 2023 for disagreeing to cooperate with DAP in elections further called on the UMNO grassroots to toughen up in the event UMNO slaps them with disciplinary action. 'If UMNO wants to sack you, so be it as I've long been fired not to mention threatened to be thrown in jail,' he pointed out in a fiery tone. 'Don't tell me you guys are unable to withstand little pain … We should gather in full force … Make it like ICERD when UMNO members gathered in the millions.' Jointly organised by PAS and UMNO, the Dec 8, 2018 ICERD rally was staged to protest against the then Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration's move to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination as it was alleged such ratification was contrary to the Federal Constitution. Added the once special officer to incarcerated former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak: Therefore, we need to show our utmost dissatisfaction to them with our protest … I know many of you disagree with the UMDAP alliance but are unable to voice your protest for fear of getting sacked from the party. But given that the current situation is one of push comes to shove, don't let hesitation stand in between anymore … Imagine Rafizi (former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli) who previously bootlicked Anwar has started to oppose his former boss. The time has come to stop pretending to accept the current UMDAP arrangement … Let the UMNO top brass see how they've lost touch with their grassroots. Show them that you're not blindly adhering to their every call especially to participate in by-elections with DAP … There is really no point to convey your protest in silence at coffee shops or over the phone. Show the party leaders your disgruntlement in a big way till their eyes pop out of their heads … No need to wear UMNO shirts, just turn out in full force.' – July 14, 2025 Main image credit: Ustaz Nurul Amin Hamid/Facebook

DBKL shuts waste site, boosts monkey control after King's rebuke over Jalan Gallagher mess
KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — City Hall (DBKL) said it launched immediate clean-up operations along Jalan Gallagher here following a royal rebuke from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, over cleanliness and wildlife issues in the area. The King had raised concerns about uncollected rubbish, clogged drains and the presence of wild monkeys along the road, prompting swift intervention from the local authority. DBKL said it had ordered contractors SWCorp and Alam Flora to intensify cleaning work in the area and increase the frequency of waste collection. 'DBKL offers its deepest gratitude to His Majesty for his concern. DBKL is committed to ensuring the cleanliness, well-being, and comfort of city residents remain a priority through continuous monitoring and swift action with related agencies,' it said in a statement. A temporary waste collection site identified as the main source of filth and monkey infestation has been ordered shut. Cleaning teams have carried out drain flushing, roadside sweeping, tree pruning and removal of rotten branches, along with grass cutting and general landscape tidying. DBKL is also introducing new, sturdier rubbish bins designed to withstand animal interference and will provide individual bins to households for direct waste collection. The council said these measures aim to reduce exposed waste, which has been a key attractant for wild animals. DBKL is working closely with the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) to address the recurring monkey problem in the area. Perhilitan previously installed traps near rubbish bins and official residences including Istana Negara, and will now expand trapping operations and patrols.
