Royals place starters Cole Ragans, Seth Lugo on IL
Ragans is dealing with a left groin strain, while Lugo has a third finger sprain, with his IL move retroactive to Wednesday.
To take their spots on the active roster, the team recalled a pair of lefties from Triple-A Omaha in Noah Cameron and Evan Sisk.
Ragans, 27, is 2-3 with a 4.53 ERA in nine starts this season and has allowed at least four runs in four of his past five outings. An All-Star for the first time in 2024, he is 20-20 with a 3.60 ERA in 79 appearances (62 starts) over four seasons with the Texas Rangers (2022-23) and Royals.
Ragans missed a start earlier this month with a mild groin strain then aggravated the injury on Friday in the club's 10-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Lugo, 35, is 3-4 with a 3.02 ERA, also in nine starts. Also an All-Star for the first time last season, Lugo is 59-44 with a 3.35 ERA in 343 appearances (106 starts) for the New York Mets (2016-22), San Diego Padres (2023) and Royals.
Cameron, 25, made his major league debut April 30 and went 6 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win against the Tampa Bay Rays. He was 2-1 with a 3.31 ERA in seven starts at Omaha.
Sisk, 28, made his major league debut on April 15 and had a pair of scoreless relief appearances. He was 0-1 with a 0.75 ERA in 12 relief appearances at Omaha.
Cameron is scheduled to get the start Saturday night against the Cardinals in Kansas City.

August 17 - The Philadelphia Phillies expect to welcome back one of their star pitchers on Sunday, a day after they placed another on the injured list. Aaron Nola will make his long-awaited return to the rotation on as the Phillies vie for a split of their four-game series against the host Washington Nationals. Nola (1-7, 6.16 ERA) is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list to make his first start with Philadelphia since May 14. The right-hander went on the injured list two days later with a sprained right ankle, and then dealt with a stress fracture in his right rib cage. Nola fared well in his third rehab outing with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, striking out 11 batters in 5 2/3 scoreless innings on Tuesday in Buffalo, N.Y. "It felt good to get the pitch count up a little bit and get back in the sixth inning," Nola said, per the Philadelphia Inquirer. "The arm feels great; the ankle feels good. I'm glad to be able to finally get back on the field and catch and throw normally. I'm just excited to get back on the mound again for these guys and give them a chance to win again." The National League East-leading Phillies would like that very much, given that they lost for the fourth time in five games with a 2-0 setback to Washington on Saturday afternoon. Philadelphia was unable to solve Cade Cavalli, as the latter tossed seven scoreless innings to pocket his first win of his career. James Wood slapped a two-run double with two outs in the fifth inning to provide all the offense that Cavalli would need. Shortly after that defeat, the Phillies announced ace right-hander Zack Wheeler is headed to the 15-day injured list due to a blood clot in his right arm. There is no timetable for his return. "There's not a lot that we can say on it at this time," said Dave Dombrowski, the team's president of baseball operations. "It could have been a much more trying situation than it is." As for Nola, he is one season removed from recording 14 wins -- his most since he erupted for 17 in 2018. Lionel Messi, Inter Miami add to Galaxy's rough season
August 17 - Lionel Messi returned from injury Saturday night and finished with a goal and an assist to propel host Inter Miami to a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba also scored to help Inter Miami (13-5-6, 45 points) bounce back following a 4-1 loss last Sunday against host Orlando City SC and secure a much-needed three points in the chase for the Supporter's Shield. Messi, who had missed Miami's previous three matches across all competitions with a thigh injury, did not start but entered the game at the start of the second half. With the match knotted 1-1 in the 84th minute, Messi took a ball at the top of the box and delivered one of his signature individual efforts to put Miami ahead for good. Messi juked past the Galaxy's Lucas Sanabria and dribbled past another defender before firing a shot on target from distance past Galaxy goalkeeper Novak Micovic.
