Broncos' Sean Payton makes brass Bo Nix prediction for ‘next two years'
Broncos head coach Sean Payton has trust in his young quarterback — a lot of it.
'He's going to be one of the top four or five quarterbacks in the league the next two years,' Payton said in an interview with Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson. 'That's what we're seeing right now. He doesn't take sacks. He's got exceptional arm strength. … He threw the longest ball — (67) air yards against Cincinnati. He can run. He can throw in funny body angles.'

Nix showed some tremendous flashes as a rookie, finishing his 17 games with 3,775 yards, 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, adding 430 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, too.
In college, Nix spent three seasons at Auburn and two with Oregon.
His final season with the Ducks was when he truly exploded to stardom, as he threw for 45 touchdowns with just three interceptions en route to a third-place Heisman Trophy finish. Nix led the nation in completions and completion percentage at 364 and 77.4, respectively.
While he was the 12th pick in the 2024 draft, there were still five other quarterbacks taken ahead of him — Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, Michael Penix and JJ McCarthy.

Payton seems to believe he'll be the best of all of them.
Nix was the second-most successful rookie of the bunch last season, leading the Broncos to a 10-7 record and a playoff berth, a better outcome than any rookie quarterback and their team aside from Daniels and the Commanders.
Led by the 25-year-old quarterback, Payton has high hopes for the entire team, not just Nix.

'The short-term goal is winning the division,' he said. 'But this is a team capable of winning the Super Bowl. I've coached six teams that I thought could win the Super Bowl. Some went to championship games, some to the playoffs … This is my seventh team that I think has that.'
Payton coached the Saints for 15 years and won one Super Bowl. He was the offensive mastermind who helped Drew Brees thrive as an all-time great quarterback.

6 players to keep an eye on in 49ers joint practice with the Denver Broncos
The San Francisco 49ers' offseason takes a major step Thursday when they suit up for joint practice with the Denver Broncos. Typically the joint sessions span two days, but head coach Kyle Shanahan preferred just one day of head-to-head practice before facing off with the Broncos at Levi's Stadium on Saturday in their preseason opener. Shanahan has been a fan of joint practices and usually values them over preseason games. With questions about who will and will not play in that first exhibition bout, Thursday's practice will be our first real opportunity to evaluate some of the players standing out in camp for San Francisco. Producing against their own teammates is a plus, but producing against an opponent matters significantly more. Here are the six 49ers we're keeping a close eye on in Thursday's practice with the Broncos: WR Ricky Pearsall Pearsall started camp on the PUP list which didn't bode well for his chances at a breakout sophomore campaign. He quickly erased any doubts with a stellar string of practices where he is frequently quarterback Brock Purdy's favorite target. Pearsall by all reports is tearing up the 49ers' secondary. If he continues his success against an outstanding Denver defense it'll be a great sign for his trajectory in Year 2. DE Mykel Williams Williams is the only projected rookie starter on either side of the ball on the 49ers' unofficial depth chart. The No. 11 overall pick has made waves with his size and athleticism as an interior pass rusher. Now we'll get a chance to see him put it all together against Pro Football Focus's No. 2-ranked offensive line. His success in his first joint practice could set the table for a big rookie season. OL Ben Bartch The starting left guard job belongs to Bartch ... for now. He started camp on the Non-Football Injury list because of a quad issue. He returned this week and immediately stepped into the first-team offensive line over Nick Zakelj. The battle could re-open if Bartch struggles. If he performs well it will only further cement his place on the 49ers' starting offensive line. LB Dee Winters Speaking of players who appear to hold onto a starting job that was up for grabs to start camp, Winters is in a similar spot to Bartch. He's taken the first-team reps at the Will linebacker spot ahead of rookie third-round pick Nick Martin. We expected a real battle, but Winters' performance in camp has only strengthened his grip on the WLB job. Now the real test comes against a creative Sean Payton offense that Winters isn't seeing every day. This will be his chance to show improvement in the run game − an area where he struggled last season. OL Colton McKivitz There's no battle for the starting right guard job, but McKivitz did talk to reporters about his intensified offseason workouts and his goal to make a Pro Bowl in his fifth NFL season. Last year was an improvement for the 2020 fifth-round pick. Thursday's joint session with Denver will give him an opportunity to show another leap is coming after his new offseason regimen. CB Upton Stout There's a case to be made that all the rookies are worth keeping an eye on in their first opportunities against an opponent who isn't their teammate. Stout is a special case though because he appears to be the frontrunner for the starting nickel cornerback job. He's been a frequent visitor to post-practice recaps thanks to some highlight plays and praise from the 49ers' coaching staff. Now he'll get an opportunity to prove himself against a real opponent and become the second rookie to grab a starting spot on defense. Andrew Kittredge throws Cubs' sixth immaculate inning, 1 day after getting booed off the mound
Andrew Kittredge's first two appearances with the Chicago Cubs were perfect. His third appearance was a disaster. His fourth appearance? The sixth immaculate inning in franchise history. The veteran reliever accomplished the feat of three strikeouts on nine pitches on Wednesday in the seventh inning of a game against the Cincinnati Reds. His victims: Austin Hays, Gavin Lux and Tyler Stephenson, all of whom went down swinging. Immaculate innings are one of the less-known single-game accomplishments in baseball, but the fact that there have only been 120 in MLB history puts them closer to perfect games (24) than no-hitters (326) on the rarity scale. They are becoming more frequent, though, with 13 in the past four seasons. Cal Quantrill of the Miami Marlins and Brandon Young of the Baltimore Orioles are responsible for the other two immaculate innings this season. Kittredge, whom the Cubs acquired at the trade deadline for infield prospect Wilfri De La Cruz, entered the history books just one day after getting booed off the field at Wrigley Field. He allowed four earned runs in an inning of work, taking the loss in a 5-1 Reds victory. Immaculate innings have a tendency to sneak up on people who are watching the game, or even the ones playing in it. The Cubs booth praised Kittredge for bouncing back by striking out the side, until a graphic showed the words "immaculate inning" and Cubs catcher Carson Kelly admitted he didn't realize what was happening until pitch No. 9: 'The last pitch [is when I realized]. I was like, 'Wow. We went sinker, sinker, slider; sinker, sinker, slider; sinker, sinker... slider?' It was pretty cool to be a part of that.' Kittredge is a nine-year MLB veteran and was solid in his half-season with Orioles — solid enough in fact to get traded as the team decided to punt on a lost 2025 season. He was one of four players acquired by the Cubs at the deadline, alongside fellow reliever Taylor Rogers, utility man Willi Castro and starting pitcher Michael Soroka, whose status is very up in the air right now.
