Jason Constantine, Lionsgate Co-President, Dies at 55
Respected Lionsgate executive Jason Constantine has died at age 55 after a long battle with cancer, the studio announced Thursday.
The executive was a fixture on the festival circuit and a major player in the acquisitions space for years. He started his career more than 25 years ago at Trimark Pictures, the predecessor company of Lionsgate, where he served as director of acquisitions and rose through the ranks to become co-president of the Lionsgate motion picture group.

He was an early champion of Saw and pushed for the studio to acquire the project after viewing the short film from then-unknown director James Wan and writer-star Leigh Whannell. The franchise has grossed more than $1 billion at the box office, as has the John Wick series, which came under Constantine's tenure.
He also worked on The Expendables franchise; best picture winner Crash; Lee Daniels' Oscar-winning Precious, nominated for five Academy Awards and winner of two Oscars; and Rian Johnson's Knives Out, which was a sleeper hit at the box office.
'With his fearless spirit, creative energy and enduring talent relationships, Jason embodied the very best of our studio and our industry. His influence will continue to be felt in many of our most successful franchises,' Lionsgate said in a statement. 'His career was built around the principles that a great idea can come from anywhere, a box office triumph is meant to be shared by an entire team and our creative choices need to be bold and daring. We mourn the passing of a highly respected executive, a trusted partner and a cherished friend, and we extend our deepest condolences to his wife Kristin, his three children and his entire family.'
Constantine was a native of California, earning his B.A. from Princeton University and his M.F.A in film production from Loyola Marymount University. He was a movie buff, known for an encyclopedic knowledge of facts and figures about films.
His family asks that in lieu of flowers, mourners consider a donation to fund the brain cancer research of his neurosurgeons, Dr. Michael Lim at Stanford and Dr. Tim Cloughesy and Dr. Robert Chong at UCLA.
He is survived by his wife, Kristin, and his sons, Lucas, Nicholas and Xander.

Every 'John Wick' movie, ranked — including 'Ballerina'
Ever since "John Wick" first exploded onto the big screen back in 2014, Keanu Reeves' legendary hitman has been adored by action movie fans, myself included. Across the last decade, the "Wickverse" has expanded far beyond the initial setup of "retired assassin gets revenge on the twerp who killed his dog." Since then, Wick's gone global, gunned down countless foes, and taken on some of the most powerful players in the game. And, in that time, the "John Wick" movies have continued to do what they do best: serve up tons of ultra-thrilling on-screen action, time and time again. There simply isn't a "bad" movie among them. In the run-up to the newly released "John Wick" spinoff, "Ballerina," I revisited all four of the previous installments to prepare for more carnage. Following this refresher, here are all five "John Wick" movies, ranked. Alas, our most recent addition to the "John Wick" canon is the weakest of the lot. "Ballerina" is far from a bad watch, to be clear. Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas) makes for a great new lead, and the movie packs in plenty of stellar setpieces that fans are going to love — the entire final act is a riot. — But I think the story isn't as well-conceived as it could have been. Past "John Wick" watches set the bar so, so high, and I just don't think "Ballerina" eclipses the past four films. It's a hollow but still entertaining experience, one that is worthy of the franchise name, but isn't quite as propulsive as what's come before. I'm sure this won't be a popular choice, but while I adore the simplicity of the story and the tight, grittier feel of the original "John Wick," on reflection, I think I like where the franchise goes more than where it starts. Make no mistake, I have a lot of love for the original Wick flick. From the jump, Reeves' assassin means serious business, and seeing Keanu stoically rip through countless bad guys is gleefully fun. "John Wick" is still a blast, and represents the assassin in his purest form, but if I were asked which of the movies was my favorite, this would not be my answer. Watch on Peacock "John Wick: Chapter 2" is, plain and simple, a bigger, bloodier version of what came before. Wick's plans to give up on the killing once more are interrupted by the arrival of Santino D'Antonio, who's here to collect on an old favor. I've just said I appreciate where the franchise goes (probably making the ranking obvious), but "Chapter 2" did exactly what a "John Wick" follow-up needed to: show us John kicking plenty more ass in another set of stylish, skilfully staged action sequences, while also building the mythology out that little bit more. It might opt for the "more is more" approach, but let me remind you that "Chapter 2" contains — among other things — the tube fight with Cassian, the museum melee, the campy shopping montage, the hall of mirrors scene, and the pencil kill. In other words? It's worth it. Watch on Peacock "Parabellum" ups the ante on its predecessor significantly. With John now "excommunicado" and unable to access the resources of the assassin underworld, he's on the run, and there's practically a killer lurking around every corner after the hefty bounty on his head. The stakes feel on another level, and that results in a thrilling opening act (how can you not love the knife store melee, or the library book execution?). We stick the landing, too, with the gripping siege on the New York Continental. I know that some fans don't love the way this leans a little more into its sillier, expansive universe, but I think "Parabellum's" highs are just too good. Oh, and yes, I think the motorcycle katana fight is cool; sue me. Watch on Peacock The first time I sat down to watch 'John Wick 4,' I'll admit to feeling a little skeptical; having clocked the near three-hour runtime, I was a little concerned Wick's fourth outing would outstay its welcome. As we all know, that literally couldn't be further from the truth. 'John Wick 4' is an embarrassment of riches for the action genre. The franchise's fourth installment is a lavish, epic thrill-ride stuffed to the brim with ludicrously cool action sequences that have been burned into my memory ever since I watched them. The Arc de Triomphe scrap that has John and his foes dipping in and out of traffic right by the Parisian monument. The following birds-eye sequence equips John with an incendiary shotgun. The brawl with Killa at the club. The iconic stairway fight. The uber-tense duel with Caine. I could go on. The fight choreography (and the camerawork that captures it) in 'John Wick 4' is just off the charts. It's the franchise at its most maximalist. Excessive? Absolutely. Bloated? Potentially — but gloriously so. Wick's latest outing is a genuine masterclass in on-screen thrills, and I truly believe it to be one of the very best action movies ever committed to the big screen. Movie Review: FROM THE WORLD OF JOHN WICK: BALLERINA
Sequels are hard. Franchises are even harder. Friends, yours truly continues to be a card-carrying John Wick: Chapter 4 fan. However, I am decidedly not a fan of needless sequels. Over the course of the last year, though, we've seen Hollywood really start testing out the Wick Universe. Just how far will this dark, chaotic and violent world stretch? Well, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina aims to test that. Will the frenetic stunt spectacular land a solid punch? Or will the fireworks fail to spark? Read on. From the World of John Wick: Ballerina A young woman (Ana de Armas), after growing up in the Ruska Roma ballet school, strikes out on her own as an assassin. With her newfound freedom, she is solely focused on avenging her father's murder. However, she soon finds herself entangled with a super-secret cult of murderers. Will she be able to come out on top? Ian McShane, Angelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, Norman Reedus and Lance Reddick co-star in the movie. Len Wiseman directs From the World of John Wick: Ballerina from a script by Shay Hatten. From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is a beast of a title, but boy, oh, boy. I must bow to the Wick creative team for continually finding a way to keep the franchise feeling not only fresh but innovative. Five films in, most franchises are starting to feel … a little dusty. Not John Wick , it seems, though. RELATED: Final Destination: Bloodlines Spoiler Review Wiseman and his creative team step into large shoes. Chad Stahelski helmed the first four films and played a vital role in crafting this world. Kids, you wouldn't even know Stahelski wasn't behind the camera. From the World of John Wick: Ballerina captures the same quick pacing in this magnificent, fluorescent, breakneck universe. Wiseman, for those who might not remember, cut his teeth directing the Underworld franchise beginning with the first film in 2003, so he knows his way around a stunt. It shouldn't come as a surprise, but Ana de Armas slays (pun intended) as Eve, the once lost little girl coming into her own. She's by herself for long stretches of time, but her intense physicality and an occasionally winking charisma allow her to easily carry the story. De Armas, however, is particularly at ease with the stunt work, which, like any John Wick film, is always formidable. This franchise's ability to develop on its stunts with each passing movie is a thing of beauty. Nothing is repeated. While John Wick had to spend the fourth film fighting his way through Paris, Eve must work her way through a quaint little village in the Alps, where apparently everyone is an assassin. Everything can be used as a weapon: katanas, hand grenades, dinner plates … fingers. There were plenty of shocked scoffs in the theater thanks to the pace and ferocity of the film's violence. This film is a hoot with an audience. RELATED: Bring Her Back Spoiler Review At the same time, the movie's dynamic supporting players will feel immediately comfortable to everyone familiar with the John Wick franchise. Ian McShane, of course, dominates when he's on screen. Any elder millennial will tell you, with far too much glee, that Angelica Huston is a queen. However, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina also reminded yours truly of one thing. We don't deserve Gabriel Byrne, who cuts a menacing figure as The Chancellor. Friends, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is a rarity. It might be the fifth film in the franchise, but it's also just as fun as the first. The seamless melding of inventive stunts, magnetic world-building and a colorful cast of supporting characters shoulder the load easily. This is an effortlessly gritty stunt spectacular and a must-see for John Wick fans the world over. From the World of John Wick: Ballerina opens in theaters on June 6, 2025.
