Particularly memorable for its emotional storytelling and one thousand episode long running mysteries, the series is now teasing a huge reveal with regard to Brook—the Straw Hat crews' skeleton musician. The arc is setting the stage for what could be the most heart-rending character arc we've seen in years, revealing Brook's forgotten history and his unexpected link to a dangerous new enemy: Gunko of the God's Knights.
Brook: The Soul King with a hidden history
Brook, AKA the 'Soul King,' is not only one of the most fun, but one of the oldest and most mysterious characters in One Piece—a Straw Hat musician—he's far more than that. As a user of the Revive-Revive Fruit, Brook died over 50 years prior to the beginning of the story and returned to life, forever burdened with having outlived his initial crew, the Rumbar Pirates.
Though fans are aware of his promise to Laboon and what transpired during his time in the Florian Triangle, not much about Brook's early life is known.

Gunko of the god's knights shares a mysterious past with Brook
Gunko was introduced during the Military State arc of the Elbaf Arc, and is one of the elite God's Knights (a feared group of Celestial Dragon enforcers). Gunko wasn't always a Celestial Dragon. She's special and unique and unlike anybody else.
Yet in One Piece Chapter 1149, when Gunko sees a flashback image of Brook and then immediately calls out his name, it implies an even stronger connection.
This grace note is abruptly surreal when she is unexpectedly overtaken by Imu, the unseen sovereign of their world. Fans can speculate on the implications of Gunko having previously known Brook before death, potentially as a child or individual related to Brook's life in the West Blue.
The link is at once emotional, haunting, and obviously vital.
Could Gunko be Brook's long-lost daughter?
Even Brook himself didn't think he'd ever be able to reconnect with anyone from his original life. Which is what makes this encounter so stunning. Gunko's emotional turmoil goes beyond simple awe. She's a huge fan of the 'Soul King,' and we see her listening to his music before she is introduced in the arc, but her reaction when she sees him goes beyond fandom.

With her memories suppressed by Imu, it stands to reason Gunko doesn't completely recall who she is or what Brook meant to her. Nowadays theories are floating around that she might actually be Brook's daughter — or at least someone he used to protect. If that's the case, this reveal would be similar to Nico Robin's tragic reunion with Saul, with a much more sinister flavor.
Brook's forgotten life could be key to the final saga
Of all the Straw Hats, Brook has the most undeveloped backstory.
If compared to contemporaries like Marlon James and Zadie Smith, whose homelands and early lives have been traceably mapped by journalists and scholars over the years, Brook's beginnings remain largely an enigma. Now, the Elbaf Arc will hopefully explore that fallen kingdom he used to serve and what transpired prior to his joining the Rumbar Pirates.
Might this neglected realm be somehow connected to the Celestial Dragons or the Void Century themselves? Could Brook's knowledge of the past be a fatal blow to the World Government? These are central questions as the saga heads toward its final act.
Imu is controlling Gunko—But why?
Imu's possession of Gunko isn't just a dramatic twist—it could be a smokescreen. Just as she starts to get a glimpse of Brook's memory, Imu stops her, leading to the assumption that the World Government is concealing something even more massive. Is Gunko being used as a vessel? What makes her so special then?
Unlike other God's Knights, Gunko would become essentially ageless. Her youth, in the face of old memories, and her bizarre link to the Abyss paint a picture of someone who's been changed—maybe even brought back to life as Brook has.
This makes her unique even among powerful figures such as Garling and the Five Elders.
Story of lost family and forgotten pain

unko's relationship to Brook gives substantial emotional depth to the Elbaf Arc. Though Robin and Saul's reunion was a cause for celebration, Brook and Gunko's tale is more sobering and tragic. Two lovers encumbered by time, destiny, and maybe the Reaper himself, reunite at last—but only on opposite sides of a brewing conflict.
With this bittersweet emotional arc bringing Brook's story to a close, he could finally be taking his deserved spot among the Straw Hat pantheon—and reminding audiences why One Piece is a longform storytelling masterclass.
