Tom Cruise's all time best movies ranked including 'breathtaking and moving' 80s classic
Tom Cruise, the quintessential '80s Hollywood heartthrob, has been dazzling audiences for decades, and now we've got the definitive list of his best and worst films.
Rotten Tomatoes, the esteemed review aggregator, has crunched the numbers, using authentic critiques to sort through Cruise's extensive filmography. The rankings may throw up a few surprises, with some of Cruise's more obscure roles securing spots in the top 10, while others are expected entries thanks to widespread critical praise.
Topping the charts as the actor's most celebrated work, according to viewer ratings, is the high-octane Mission: Impossible-Fallout. The 2018 blockbuster, which is the sixth instalment in the Mission: Impossible saga, has garnered an outstanding 98% rating, making it a clear fan favourite.
One critic said: "Mission: Impossible - Fallout is hands down one of the best action movies I've seen in a while. The stunts are absolutely wild, and knowing Tom Cruise actually did them makes it even crazier."
They added: "The pacing keeps you locked in from start to finish-there's never a dull moment. The story ties in nicely with the previous films but still stands strong on its own."
Cruise's reputation for performing his own death-defying stunts has certainly paid off, influencing the high ranking of his stunt-laden features, with the recent hit Top Gun: Maverick soaring into second place in the 2022 charts.
Unexpected entries have climbed the rankings out of 44 films, with the 2002 Steven Spielberg hit Minority Report making a notable appearance.
It's closely tailed by Spielberg's 1988 classic Rain Man, which is just a whisker behind with an 88% rating, followed by The Color of Money in tenth place.
Discussing Rain Man, the Mirror US reports that one film enthusiast remarked it is a "comedy that brings you to tears when the credits role".
They added: "A breathtaking and moving film with such fantastic acting from both lead roles, with Tom Cruise showcasing that he can be more than a blockbuster protagonist who runs and jumps. It is a lost gem, and I hope it gains more attention as years go on."
Languishing at the bottom of the pile, in 44th place with a mere 9% score, is the romantic comedy Cocktail. In this early Tom Cruise vehicle, he plays a New York bartender with grand ambitions that take him to Jamaica to open his own bar.
The general view labels the film as rather "average," though some critics are more scathing. A review stated: "Yes, Tom Cruise has charisma. All that doesn't change the fact that this film isn't that good. Much like Cruise's character, Brian, this story drifts along without any real purpose."
It continued: "And while the acting isn't terrible, the writing is watered down, and the characters are one-dimensional. It seems that the filmmakers didn't get the mix right when it comes to Cocktail."
The Top 10 Rotten Tomatoes ranking
Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015)

Netflix period drama 'better than Outlander' is available to stream now
The 'outstanding' period drama is given a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. When trying to find a new and exciting period drama, it's often the same titles coming up time and time again. However, what if there was one hidden gem even better than the best-known series, sitting right under your nose? Inspired by the true story behind one of Italy's first female lawyers, The Law According to Lidia Poët follows the titular attorney, played by Matilda De Angelis, as she fights to practice law in late 19th-century Turin, Italy. After being disbarred from practising law simply because she is a woman and forced to be an assistant to her lawyer brother Enrico, portrayed by Pier Luigi Pasino, Lidia fights for gender equality at a time when it simply didn't exist. Despite the obstacles she faced, she continues to work hard being the scenes, using her intelligence, determination, and progressive views on justice to solve crimes. The six-part series aired on Netflix in 2023 with the second season coming a year later, the Express reports. For those that believe this sounds right up their street, it's good news because both of these seasons are available to watch on the streaming platform and better yet, another season is coming too! The third season of The Law According to Lidia Poët is expected to be released in late 2025 or early 2026. The Italian historical drama was praised after its release with critics applauding the mixture of courtroom drama, mystery-solving, and feminist themes. However, the series faced some criticism from Lidia Poët's grandnephew, who accused it of sexualising her character, ignoring her Waldensian heritage and lacking proper historical context. Despite the backlash, The Law According to Lidia Poët has a perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has been met with constant praise from viewers. One gushed: "Love it! Actors are brilliant, script is developed and interesting; Costumes are Amazing!!! The details of jewellery and accessories for Lidia are Fabulous!!!!! "Love the insect brooches or fly/ spider earrings!!! And that's just 1 character!! Everything, the finest detail was designed and styled to perfection!!!" A second chimed in: "This is a great series based on the two seasons I have watched. Hint: You'll not want to miss the Season 2 finale and everything which leads up to it. Netflix deserves our thanks for this worthwhile show." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. A fifth echoed: "This TV series is so so so well written and made its adventures entertaining. You must go watch this tv series!! So far both two seasons are phenomenal."

Netflix fans have days left to binge 'the greatest TV series of all time'
Netflix users in the UK only have a matter of days left to binge a show many have described as 'the greatest TV series of all time.' First airing in 2004, Lost helped to revolutionise dramatic television as we know it. Following a group of passengers stranded on a mysterious island after a catastrophic plane crash, it left viewers fascinated, frustrated and infatuated, in equal measure. Following its history-making first season, the show went on to accumulate five more series before coming to an end in May 2010. Since then, viewers have continued to unpack the island's many mysteries, with the show experiencing a resurgence when it was first added to Netflix last August. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. But time is now running out for Netflix users to catch up or finish off, with Lost set to leave Netflix on August 15. While its divisive ending may have sent Lost off on a somewhat sour note, it remains well-regarded by fans and critics alike. Its collective six seasons boast an impressive 86% Fresh score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Its audience score sits at an even healthier 89%, with some viewers still holding it up as one of – if not the greatest – TV shows of all time. 'The greatest TV show ever made. Not even close to be honest,' wrote Rotten Tomatoes user Derek R. 'Absolutely amazing, acting was incredible. I will never stop praising/recommending this show 15 years since after its ending,' said Noah P. Boopi H commented: 'One of the most mysterious, magical shows ever presented. nearly every episode came up with new, often mind blowing, twist that left me totally transfixed & begging for more. hated seeing it end.' 'No other show has ever hooked me like LOST did,' said Ray. Over the course of its six seasons, viewers followed the simmering love triangle of tortured surgeon Jack Shepherd (Matthew Fox), criminal Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly) and conman Sawyer (Josh Holloway). The three stars led an enormous cast, which also included the mysterious Locke (Terry O'Quinn), loveable Hurley (Jorge Garcia) and creepy Ben Linus (Michael Emerson). While it may have struggled under the weight of its own impenetrable mysteries, the show consistently put out what many have declared some of the best episodes of TV – including the mind-bending season 4 episode The Constant, and season 3's devastating two-part finale, Through the Looking Glass. Its successes may have been overshadowed by a divisive (and arguably oft-misunderstood) ending, but it never Lost (heh) sight of its characters, all of whom still resonate today. Given the show's iconic status, it's inevitable, then, that audiences have been holding out for a reboot or sequel series. Earlier this year, co-executive producer Drew Goddard (who came aboard during its third season) weighed in on the chances of a return to the island, telling Variety: 'This question comes up on various shows that I've done, and I always feel strongly that I don't want to just do karaoke of the show I used to do. 'I'd only be interested if we felt like we could do something special and new within the construct of the show. 'And then some of it just comes down to time and appetite. So there's no plan for it today. But never say never.' Lost may be leaving Netflix in the coming weeks, but UK viewers won't have to look far to find its new home. More Trending All six seasons are now available on the streaming platform ITVX, meaning that those who didn't make it to the end still have their chance to see how it all finishes. And what of those of us who already got Lost the first time around? As a great man once said, we have to go back! View More » Lost is streaming on Netflix UK until August 15, and on ITVX now. Fans claim the thriller is 'worth watching no matter your age' Prime Video is now streaming a beloved thriller dubbed the 'UK Pulp Fiction.' For those who missed the film at the height of its fame, Snatch stars A-listers Brad Pitt, Jason Statham, Alan Ford and Stephen Graham. Set in the seedy underbelly of London, it follows a group of criminals trying to track down a stolen diamond. A synopsis states: "Illegal boxing promoter Turkish convinces gangster Brick Top to offer bets on bare-knuckle boxer Mickey at his bookie business. "When Mickey does not throw his first fight as agreed, an infuriated Brick Top demands another match." The synopsis adds: "Meanwhile, gangster Frankie Four Fingers comes to place a bet for a friend with Brick Top's bookies, as multiple criminals converge on a stolen diamond that Frankie has come to London to sell." Oscar winner Pitt portrays fighter Mickey, with Statham playing shady boxing promoter Turkish. Award-winning actor Benicio del Toro also stars, taking on the role of gangster Frankie Four Fingers. Meanwhile, Ford steps into the shoes of Brick Top. The action flick earned an impressive 74% Rotten Tomatoes score, with audiences rating it a staggering 93%. A fan raved about the thriller, penning: "All Time Classic. Pulp Fiction in the UK focused on the fallout of a rigged fighting match gone wrong. Masterfully done all around and Guy Ritchie's finest hour. Same could be said for Jason Statham." A second added: "One of the greatest British films made. Actors, script, direction .. everything is SPOT ON. It's worth watching more than once, which I very, VERY rarely say. Well done, Guy Ritchie!" Another posted: "This will always be one of the classics. Worth watching no matter your age. I last watched it with my grandparents and my parents. So an age range of 24-80. And we all loved it." A fourth declared: "Everything we have come to love from Guy Ritchie can be found in this film." Meanwhile, others have dubbed the thriller as a "must watch."
