Gary Lineker Suggests BBC Wanted Him To Leave ‘Match Of The Day'
Lineker, who has had a chequered relationship with the national broadcaster over the past couple of years, told BBC presenter Amol Rajan 'perhaps they wanted me to leave… there was a sense of that' when discussing his exit.

He was responding to a question from Rajan for an Amol Rajan Interviews episode on why he is choosing to leave now when the show is doing so well. 'Perhaps they wanted me to leave,' was Lineker's response.
Lineker, who is being replaced by three hosts next season, is remaining with the BBC to present FA Cup and World Cup coverage along with podcasts and he said that while this move is 'slightly unusual… to be honest it's a scenario that suits me perfectly.'
The BBC did not comment on today's Lineker remarks but pointed Deadline to the statement made at the time he announced his exit, which was billed as 'Gary Lineker agrees a contract extension with the BBC.' At that time in November 2024, BBC sport boss Alex Kay-Jelski called Lineker a 'world-class presenter, and we're delighted that he'll lead our coverage of the next World Cup and continue to lead our live coverage of the FA Cup.'
Lineker's latest comments, which are now available to watch on BBC iPlayer, may reopen wounds.
The ex-soccer pro kickstarted an unprecedented BBC presenter strike when he was stood down from Match of the Day hosting duties two years ago after posting a tweet comparing UK government policy on small boats to that of Nazi Germany.
Lineker returned the following week but sparked an entire review into BBC presenters' use of social media and Lineker's social media use has since raised questions. Last year, Lineker described the situation between him and the BBC after the tweet as a 'lover's tiff' and said 'we are fine again now.'
At £1.35M ($1.8M) per year, Lineker is currently the BBC's highest-paid presenter. His final Match of the Day will take place next month as the UK soccer season wraps up.

Louis Tomlinson And Zara McDermott Hard-Launch Relationship On Instagram
Louis Tomlinson and Zara McDermott have finally confirmed they are an item. The One Direction star and former Love Island contestant were first linked in the press earlier this year, after the two were reportedly seen dining out together in Suffolk. Since then, Louis and Zara have repeatedly popped up in the comments of one another's Instagram posts, but have remained tight-lipped about the rumours that they're dating. That is, until Monday, when Zara posted a picture of herself and Louis on her Instagram page sharing a kiss in the sunshine, accompanied by just a heart emoji. Louis initially rose to fame as one-fifth of the chart-topping boy band One Direction, who first became known on The X Factor in 2010. In the years since, Louis has embarked on a number of different ventures, including a short-lived stint playing for his hometown's team, Doncaster Rovers; a solo music career (which has so far seen him release two albums, the most recent of which topped the UK albums chart in 2022); and even judging the TV talent show on which he first found fame. Zara, meanwhile, first appeared on the fourth season of Love Island in 2018 and, like Louis, subsequently competed on The X Factor, albeit the celebrity version. More recently, she's fronted a number of documentaries for the BBC, exploring topics like revenge porn, stalking and social media. In 2022, she competed on Strictly Come Dancing, where she was the fifth celebrity to be eliminated. Louis has previously dated model Eleanor Calder, stylist Briana Jungwirth (with whom he shares a nine-year-old son, Freddie) and former Disney actor Danielle Campbell. Zara was previously in a relationship with fellow reality star Sam Thompson for five years until they parted ways towards the end of 2024. Earlier this year, Louis and Sam , which the latter spoke about at the time on his podcast.

Emma Thompson Talks ‘Harry Potter', ‘Love Actually' & How Donald Trump Stalked Her On The Set Of ‘Primary Colors' — Locarno
Emma Thompson told an intriguing story this morning at the Locarno Film Festival, where this year she is a guest of honor, that featured what she described as a creepy encounter with the 47th President, Donald Trump. Speaking to a packed audience for a career Q&A, Thompson was asked about shooting the 1998 Mike Nichols feature Primary Colors. One day on the film's set, Thompson said she was sitting in her trailer when the phone rang. He said, 'Hello, this is Donald Trump?'. I thought it was a joke and asked, 'How can I help you? Maybe he needed directions from someone,' Thompson joked. The veteran British actress continued: 'And then he said, 'I'd love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner.' I said, well, that's very sweet. Thank you so much. I'll get back to you.' Imitating Trump's unique speaking voice, Thompson said she was initially confused why the former Apprentice host called her or how he found the number to her trailer phone. But she quickly connected the dots. 'I realized that on that day, my divorce decree had come through,' Thompson said. 'And I bet he's got people looking for suitable people he could take out on his arm. You know, a nice divorcee, that's what he was looking for. And he found the number in my trailer. I mean, that's stalking.' Thompson added: 'I could have gone on a date with Donald Trump, and then I would have a story to tell. I could have changed the course of American history.' Elsewhere during the session, Thompson spoke about multiple titles in her filmography, including Richard Curtis' Love Actually. Thompson said she is continually confused by the film's popularity because of its formal peculiarities. 'I mean, it's honestly a constant source of astonishment to me that that film lasted, not that I don't like the film. I like it very much, but it's weird,' she said. Pointing to the now-viral moment in the film when her character finds out that her partner had been unfaithful, Thompson said he believes it 'touched a nerve because we get a heartbreak, especially women, we have to hide it because we don't want people to see it.' 'So really, what moves you is not her crying. It's her covering it up afterwards and then tidying the bed and going downstairs and being cheerful,' Thompson said. When quizzed on her role in Harry Potter, however, Thompson was less interested in her analyzing performance. 'It's not really an important part of my creative endeavors. I'm really sorry. I don't even be rude to those of you who like Harry Potter, but you know, I came in, did a bit with glasses and a lot of hair, and then left having been quite well paid,' she said to loud laughs from the Locarno audience. Thompson was handed the Leopard Club Award for career achievement last night in Locarno. The festival runs until August 16. Vernon Kay hits back ‘how stupid do you think I am' after Tess Daly question
Radio presenter Vernon Kay joked 'how stupid do you think I am' when discussing a segment on his show about people who give their partners the 'ick'. Co-star Tina Daheley posed the question after reading the news on Vernon's BBC Radio 2 show yesterday (Friday, August 8). Vernon's co-star tried to explain the concept of the 'ick' by describing it as bad habits that "drive you mad". Examples included not putting the toilet seat down, eating loudly, laughing at your own jokes and the way they talk to their mum. He said: "How stupid do you think I am? Behave yourself. I'm full of a cold. I've got the flu. I've got a bit icky myself. "I'm looking forward to a nice quiet weekend. I don't want to have a nice, quiet weekend on my own." Tina quickly clarified that she was asking if Tess has any 'icks' about him, with Vernon retorting: "Oh, there's loads." Vernon, 51, and Tess, 56, tied the knot in 2003. They share daughters Phoebe, 20, and 15-year-old Amber. It comes after the TV and radio star admitted he was mocked by staff in a supermarket over a "senior moment" as he was almost "done for thieving'. He was doing some shopping in an unnamed supermarket earlier this week when he was shocked to realise he had not paid for his food. Fortunately for Vernon he had only just left the store and was able to return and sheepishly apologise for his transgression. Vernon told the story on his radio show: 'I had a senior moment this morning, it could have got me into trouble. I went to a very famous supermarket which is in Marylebone Station and I scanned my food, walked out. 'I went, 'Ah!' Could have been horrendous, could have been absolutely horrendous and the lady, when I walked back, she was just absolutely laughing her head off. She went, 'I saw you, didn't say anything because I knew you'd realise'. 'It was so funny, imagine that, shocking, but it was one of those things where I just scanned my food and wondered off, didn't even think about it because I thought I'd tapped, I hadn't. You know you're old when you get done for thieving.' Vernon got his big television break as a presenter on T4 back in 2000. His other major credits include All Star Family Fortunes and as a co-presenter on the short-lived reality TV show Splash! He also came third in season 20 of I'm A Celebrity.... Get Me Out of Here! The series, held in Wales rather than the Australian jungle due to Covid-19, saw podcaster Giovanna Fletcher win with Radio 1 presenter Jordan North finishing runner-up.
