He said: "We need to equip those people to make sure they've got the right tools to do the job and they will do a cracking job. "They've got some great ideas, some brilliant initiatives and I'm absolutely sure if we empower them and give them the opportunity to change things and help themselves we'll see a dramatic improvement."
Mr Smillie said although morale was "low", staff members were "optimistic" with the plans going into the future.He said: "They really care about the service they provide, there's absolute acknowledgement it's not where it needs to be and they have lots of ideas."In terms of the systems that we have, the technology that we've deployed, it's just not working in a way that they need in order to provide a good service."The chief executive said change would take time and that it had to happen "from the bottom, up".He said: "The thing I'm really pleased about is we've got a group of people that are kind of really, really up for that and that's the kind of case study I'd like to create within the public services. "We've got a very good, difficult situation that we wouldn't necessarily want to be in but the advantage we've got to take from that is when we start to demonstrate change, it will be an example we continue to use to others."

'Clean water is secret ingredient of world-renowned oysters'
Guernsey's clean, disease-free water is the secret ingredient behind an island's global reputation for high-quality oysters, according to the owners of a Sea Farms' co-founder Mark Dravers said the "blue economy" - sustainable marine businesses - had become "very fashionable" and had contributed to farm gaining millions of customers around the farm, based in a disused quarry in northern Guernsey, produces juvenile oysters which are then grown to full size once said the island's clean water is "really important" for achieving paperwork to certify exports as disease-free, which is a "unique selling point". Co-founder Penny Dravers said the farm shipped "tens of millions of oysters" around the world, including to Canada and Peru."People often confuse us with Herm oysters," Mrs Dravers said, "but in fact we don't produce the final product... the oyster that you'll get at a restaurant." When they send shipments to places such as South Africa, they can have a million oysters in a single polystyrene box, weighing about 10 kilos."We'll have a million there and that could be worth £10,000," Mr Dravers couple believe the reason customers buy from them is because of "the reputation of Guernsey waters". Mrs Dravers said the farm had strict biosecurity procedures in place to protect the water quality and have to go through a detailed biosecurity induction on arrival, as well as a "water bath that people have to walk through".Mr Dravers said the farm did not import any oysters in order to maintain biosecurity, despite the island's waters having no native said they also had controls in place to protect against invasive species, such as filtered and ultraviolet treated more than 40 years in the business, the couple have started to take a more hands-off approach and hand over the reins to "the next generation", Mr Dravers said."We're really pleased to show people that there's something going on in Guernsey that isn't just finance," he said.

US jobless claims edge up; productivity improves in second quarter
Aug 7 (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits ticked up to the highest level in a month last week, suggesting the labor market was largely stable even though job creation is weakening and it is taking laid-off workers longer to find new jobs. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits for the week ended August 2 rose 7,000 to a seasonally adjusted 226,000, the highest level since the week ended July 5, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 221,000 claims for the latest week. The labor market has slowed, with government data last week showing far fewer jobs were created in July than economists had expected as uncertainty over President Donald Trump's tariffs left businesses wary of adding workers. Moreover, employment gains in the previous two months were revised lower by nearly 260,000, a stunning reversal that prompted Trump to fire the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics - a move that rattled investors and economists already anxious about the eroding quality of official U.S. economic data. The latest data on new claims indicates employers are not yet turning to large-scale layoffs as the economy loses steam but are managing through attrition. That has helped keep the unemployment rate, at 4.2% in July, relatively low even while job growth has slowed. Declining labor supply amid the White House's immigration crackdown is also helping to stave off a jump in the jobless rate. Employers' hesitancy to increase hiring means there are fewer jobs for those being laid off. The number of people receiving benefits after an initial week of aid, a proxy for hiring, rose to a seasonally adjusted 1.974 million during the week ending July 26, the claims report showed. That was the highest level of so-called continued claims since November 2021, and the the increase of 38,000 from the previous week was the largest since late May. Meanwhile, the Labor Department also said worker productivity rebounded more than expected in the second quarter, easing a surge in labor costs at the start of the year. Nonfarm business sector productivity increased 2.4% in the April-June period after declining by 1.8% in the first three months of the year, the BLS reported. Economists polled by Reuters had expected productivity to rise by 2.0%. Worker output increased by 3.7%, the largest improvement since the third quarter of 2023, while unit labor cost growth moderated to 1.6% from an upwardly revised 6.9% in the first quarter.

Peloton to cut more jobs, forecasts strong 2026 revenue; shares rise
Aug 7 (Reuters) - Peloton Interactive (PTON.O), opens new tab forecast 2026 revenue above estimates and said it would cut 6% of its global workforce to boost cost savings under an ongoing turnaround effort, sending the exercise-bike maker's shares up 4%. The company also posted a surprise profit for the fourth quarter. The layoffs, along with plans to slash indirect costs and relocate some offices, are expected to help save an additional $100 million by the end of its next fiscal year, Peloton said on Thursday. CEO Peter Stern, who joined the company in January from Ford Motor (F.N), opens new tab, had kicked off the turnaround effort to address a slump in sales of Peloton's high-end stationary bikes and treadmills following a boom during the COVID lockdowns, when people were looking to work out at home. In a sign the cost push was bearing fruit, operating expenses fell 20% in the fourth quarter, while general and administrative expenses were down 33% from last year. Gross margin from its connected fitness products such as technology-enabled home exercise machines rose 900 basis points to 17.3% from a year ago. The fitness company expects tariffs to dent its 2026 free cash flow expectations by $65 million, and said it will adjust prices to offset the impact of the extra costs. Total revenue for the quarter ended June was $606.9 million. Analysts, on average, were expecting revenue of $579.80 million in the fourth quarter.
