All 'taarif', no gain: Congress mocks PM Modi as Trump slaps 25% tariff

The Congress party on Wednesday took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi after US President Donald Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff and Russia-related penalties on imports from India. The party said PM Modi's friendship with the American leader had not delivered any real benefits.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh mocked the bond between PM Modi and Trump. In a post on X, he wrote: 'President Trump has slapped a tariff of 25 per cent plus penalty on imports from India. All that 'taarif' between him and 'Howdy Modi' has meant little.'
He accused PM Modi of staying silent in the past despite several provocations by the US, including Trump's controversial remarks on India, and claimed it was a strategy that had clearly failed.
"Mr Modi thought that if he kept quiet on the insults that the US President has hurled on India -- the 30 claims of stopping Op Sindoor, the special lunch for the Pakistan Army Chief whose inflammatory remarks provided the immediate backdrop to the brutal Pahalgam terror attacks, and US support for financial packages to Pakistan from the IMF and the World Bank -- India would get special treatment at the hands of President Trump. Clearly that has NOT happened," Ramesh said. He added: "He should take inspiration from Indira Gandhi and stand up to the US President."
Congress MPs call for firm response
Congress MP Mallu Ravi said that Trump was threatening the Indian government and imposing unjust duties. He said that the 25 per cent tariff was "not acceptable to India". Another Congress MP, Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, criticised Modi's approach, saying: "Modi claims that Trump is his best friend but the US president's agenda was clear that he wanted to impose tariffs on India."
He urged the government to quickly finalise a trade agreement with the United States, warning that delays could hurt exports and the Indian economy.
Trump explains tariff decision
Earlier in the day, Trump announced the 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods starting August 1, citing unresolved issues in bilateral trade talks. He highlighted India's high import duties, major defence and energy purchases from Russia, and what he called "obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers" as reasons for the move.
"India will be paying a tariff of 25 per cent plus a penalty," Trump said, while also complaining about the "massive trade deficit with India." Despite these strong measures, Trump referred to India as a "friend" in his post on Truth Social.

Supreme Court Stays Rahul Gandhi Defamation Case; Says: 'If You Were True Indian, You Wouldn't Say All This'

'Whatever you have to say, why don't you say in the parliament? Why do you have to say this in the social media posts?' The Supreme Court of India. Photo: Pinakpani/Wikimedia Commons. CC BY-SA 4.0. New Delhi: The Supreme Court today granted interim stay in the criminal defamation case against leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, over his remarks on the Galwan clash of 2020 – but rebuked him for making social media posts on Indian territory having been ceded to China. Gandhi had filed a special leave petition challenging the Allahabad high court's judgment which refused to quash the proceedings of the defamation case pending in a Lucknow court. The complaint was filed by former Border Roads Organisation (BRO) director Uday Shankar Srivastava and alleges that remarks by Gandhi on December 16, 2022, during his Bharat Jodo Yatra foot march, were derogatory in nature. Srivastava has claimed that Gandhi said that the Chinese army is "thrashing our soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh," and that the Indian media "will not ask any questions in this regard." On June 15, 2020, Chinese and Indian troops engaged in a clash at the Galwan valley in Ladakh, leading to the death of 20 Indian soldiers and at least four Chinese soldiers and heightened tensions. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in televised remarks soon afterwards that 'neither has anyone intruded into our border, nor is anyone intruding, nor have any of our posts been captured by someone'. A part of this was redacted in the official press release that followed. The external affairs ministry had claimed that the clash occurred after 'the Chinese side sought to erect a structure in the Galwan valley on our side of the LAC [Line of Actual Control]'. While the two sides have disengaged troops, much remains unknown about Chinese incursions into Arunachal Pradesh and its extent in Ladakh. LiveLaw has reported that Justice Dipankar Datta told Gandhi, "Whatever you have to say, why don't you say in the parliament? Why do you have to say this in the social media posts?" The bench also had Justice A.G. Masih. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi had told the court that if Gandhi cannot say things that are published in the press, "he cannot be a leader of opposition." "Tell, Dr. Singhvi, how do you get to know that 2000 square kilometres of Indian territory were occupied by the Chinese? Were you there? Do you have any credible material? Why do you make these statements without you were a true Indian, you would not say all this," Justice Datta also said. To this, Singhvi noted that it is also possible that a true India "will say that our 20 Indian soldiers were beaten up and killed and that it is a matter of concern." "When there is a conflict across the order, is it unusual to have casualties on both sides?" Justice Datta asked in response. Justice Datta argued that the proper forum to raise questions is not social media. The LiveLaw report noted Singhvi said that while Gandhi could have worded the comments better, the defamation complaint was nothing but an attempt to harass him only for raising questions as an opposition leader. Singhvi conceded that the fact that it was not raised before the high court that Gandhi was not heard prior to the criminal complaint having been registered – something that violates Section 233 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The bench agreed to consider this point and has issued notice. The Wire is now on WhatsApp. Follow our channel for sharp analysis and opinions on the latest developments.

Selling, general and administrative expenses are projected at $124 million to $125 million, or 25.5 to 25.3 per cent of sales. Income from operations is expected to be between $50 million and $53 million, or 10.3 to 10.7 per cent of sales, with net income per diluted share forecast in the range of $1.19 to $1.27. Meanwhile, the company reported a robust performance for Q1 FY26 ended June 28, 2025, with net sales surging 19.1 per cent year-over-year (YoY) to $504.1 million. Same-store sales rose 9.4 per cent, including a 9.5 per cent increase at retail stores and 9.3 per cent in e-commerce. The company posted net income of $53.4 million, or $1.74 per diluted share, compared to $38.9 million, or $1.26 per diluted share, a year earlier. The gross profit improved by 210 basis points to 39.1 per cent of net sales, supported by enhanced merchandise margins and operational efficiencies. Selling, general and administrative expenses fell slightly to 25.1 per cent of net sales, despite increased store count and marketing costs. Boot Barn opened 14 new stores during the quarter, bringing its total to 473, added the release. 'We are pleased with our strong start to fiscal 2026, highlighted by high-single digit consolidated same-store sales growth and successful new store openings, which drove 19 per cent overall revenue growth,' said John Hazen, chief executive officer (CEO) at Boot Barn Holdings. ' Demand was broad-based, with strength across all major merchandise categories and geographies. At the same time, we improved gross profit 210 basis points, led by robust merchandise margin expansion which, along with solid expense control, fuelled a 38 per cent increase in earnings per diluted share.' 'As a result of our better than expected first quarter performance and the continued strength we have seen as we moved into our second quarter, we are raising our full-year outlook while maintaining our prior guidance for the second half of the year,' added Hazen. 'With our four strategic initiatives delivering consistent results and the opportunity we have to double our store count, we remain confident in our ability to continue generating value for our shareholders over the long term.' Midcaps, smallcaps stocks to buy: Inox Wind, Radico Khaitan to UPL — Experts suggest 12 shares for the short term

Midcap and smallcap stocks to buy: One of the fundamental rules of stock market investing is to stick to large-cap stocks during periods of uncertainty, as they tend to be more stable than their mid- and small-cap counterparts. The Indian stock market is facing heightened uncertainty this year, driven by US President Donald Trump's tariff policies, persistent foreign capital outflows, and lacklustre corporate earnings. As a result, investors appear to be steering clear of mid- and small-cap stocks, instead favouring large-cap companies with broader market presence, stronger balance sheets, and a healthier growth outlook. As of August 1, equity benchmark Sensex has gained 3 per cent year-to-date, while the BSE Midcap index has declined 3 per cent. The BSE Smallcap index has lost nearly 5 per cent this year so far. Experts point out that while mid- and small-cap stocks offer upside opportunities due to their ability to grow rapidly, they are also vulnerable to market volatility and external headwinds. However, they add that one should not completely avoid mid- and small-cap stocks, as despite the plethora of headwinds, these segments have plenty of opportunities. Darshil Shah, Senior Research Analyst at HDFC Securities, said that given the backdrop of subdued earnings in Q1 FY26, persistent FPI outflows, and uncertainty regarding the US tariffs, a cautious approach is warranted around mid- and small caps. "It would not be prudent to completely avoid them, as investors would miss out on long-term growth opportunities. The domestic macroeconomics continue to remain strong, and the structural growth story for India remains intact despite temporary external headwinds," said Shah. "Investors must look for companies with a resilient business model, good corporate governance and manageable debt levels with higher domestic exposure in the mid and small caps as long-term wealth creation opportunities," Shah said. Ajit Mishra, SVP of research at Religare Broking, highlighted that in the current environment of weak earnings, persistent FPI outflows, and global uncertainties such as Trump's tariff threats, the broader mid and small-cap segments appear expensive and increasingly vulnerable. That said, the market has turned more stock-specific than theme-driven. "While broader market valuations remain elevated, select fundamentally strong companies with clear long-term growth drivers still present compelling opportunities. In this backdrop, a bottom-up investment approach focused on quality names is essential. Return expectations should remain moderate and aligned with fundamentals, rather than chasing momentum," said Mishra. Here are 12 stocks from the mid and small-cap segments that experts suggest buying for the short term. Delhivery is showing strong bullish momentum following a V-shaped recovery from lower levels.
