Psychologist Candice Leith weighs in as flasher alarms Ballito residents

Allegations of public indecency have unsettled Ballito residents after a man reportedly exposed himself twice in two days.
The Ballito Neighbourhood Watch (BNW) confirmed that both cases involved a young white male allegedly exposing himself to unsuspecting women in public places over the weekend of July 12 and 13.
The first incident occurred near Salmon Bay, where a female jogger was approached by a man driving a white Toyota Aygo. After asking for directions, the driver allegedly exposed himself before speeding off.
The second incident took place on the boardwalk near Clarke Bay, where two female holidaymakers were out for a morning walk. They described the flasher as a 'young, clean-cut, white male.'
These events have sparked concern, prompting the BNW to issue a public alert and encourage immediate reporting of any similar behaviour. Indecent exposure is a criminal offence in South Africa.
Ballito psychologist Dr Candice Rae Leith weighed in on the psychological aspect of the incidents, linking the behaviour to a mental health condition known as Exhibitionistic Disorder.
'People with this disorder feel intense sexual arousal from the act of exposure itself, particularly from the victim's surprise or shock,' said Leith.
'In many cases, this behaviour is compulsive and repeated, causing distress for victims and sometimes guilt and shame for the offender.'
According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), Exhibitionistic Disorder is diagnosed when an individual aged 18 or older experiences persistent sexual urges or fantasies for at least six months involving exposing themselves to non-consenting people. The person must either act on these urges or experience significant distress or disruption in their life.
'This helps professionals distinguish a diagnosable disorder from a one-off act of poor judgement,' said Leith, who notes the illness can be treated and managed.
She says specialist psychotherapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, can help the person understand their triggers and develop healthier coping strategies. In some cases, medication is used to help reduce compulsive sexual urges.
'Community awareness and prompt reporting help protect everyone's safety. At the same time, people struggling with these urges deserve access to treatment so they can stop harmful behaviour before more damage is done.'
No arrests have been made.

Hijacked taxi recovered in Upper Tongaat, three suspects arrested

A dramatic police and private security operation led to the arrest of three men and the recovery of a hijacked school taxi in Upper Tongaat this morning, August 6. The incident began in Blackburn, where a 43-year-old driver on his way to collect schoolchildren had his path blocked by two men on a dirt road. A third man allegedly emerged from nearby sugarcane fields wielding a dagger and forced the driver into the back of the car. The men allegedly assaulted him and tied him up before fleeing in the hijacked VW Crafter. Fortunately, no children had been picked up at the time of the hijacking. At 8.24am, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a tip-off from a concerned member of the public and immediately dispatched all available officers. The taxi, fitted with a tracking device, was traced moving through Hambanathi and later spotted heading towards Esenembe on the R614. RUSA officers, joined by Verulam Saps and multiple private security companies, intercepted the taxi at a petrol station in Upper Tongaat, where the men stopped to refuel. The suspects were arrested just over 20 minutes after the hijacking took place. Authorities praised the swift co-ordination between law enforcement and private security teams, which ensured the safe recovery of the vehicle and the driver. RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram warned hijackings are on the rise and that criminals are changing their behaviour. 'We have noticed an increase in victims being taken with the vehicles,' said Balram. 'This is because it delays the victims from calling law enforcement or the tracking companies. They take the victims along before leaving them in an isolated area. By the time law enforcement finds the victims, the suspects are long gone.' Balram said he has also noticed an increase in hijackings when the weather is poor or visibility is low. 'Rain and fog hamper the search helicopters, making it harder to locate the vehicles from above,' added Balram. Investigations are ongoing. Glendale Saps station commander survives shootout

Glendale Saps station commander, captain Nhlaliyenza Mahlobo, survived a shootout with three armed robbers last week. Mahlobo had reportedly responded to a call for backup in the Sinamfini area of Maphumulo and later joined a high-speed chase in pursuit of the three men towards KwaLuthuli, where they stopped and allegedly opened fire. Despite being alone in the chase vehicle, Mahlobo returned fire and hit one man, Thandokuhle Qwabe (28), in the stomach. The other two men fled the scene and are still at large. Mahlobo was uninjured. Qwabe was initially under police guard in hospital, but recovered enough to make his first appearance in the Ndwedwe Magistrate's Court on Monday. He has been charged with the attempted murder of a police officer and armed robbery and has been remanded in custody. He will next appear at the Nsuze Magistrate's Court for the armed robbery case.
