KUCHING (July 9): The upcoming Kuching Zumba Fiesta will not only mark a decade of promoting healthy living and community bonding, but also aim to break two national records recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records, said Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.
Returning on Aug 2, the 10th edition of the event promises a grand celebration at the State Hockey Stadium, with organisers hoping to make this milestone year a historic moment for the city.
'When we launched the Kuching Zumba Fiesta in 2015, our goal was simple—to create a fun, welcoming space where people from all walks of life could come together through Zumba,' Wee said during a press conference held at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) building yesterday.
'Over the years, it has grown into one of Kuching's biggest fitness events.'
This year's fiesta will take place from 6.30pm to 10.30pm, with organisers eyeing two record-breaking achievements.
The first is to surpass the current record of 9,500 participants for the largest Zumba event in Malaysia, set in Penang in 2023.
The second goal is to break the record for the largest 'Chiva in the Dark' Zumba session, which currently stands at 5,360 participants, recorded at Sunway Surf Beach.
To cater to the large crowd and enhance the overall experience, Wee added that MBKS will be equipping the venue with a high-powered sound system and a large high-definition LED screen.
'These upgrades aim to ensure that music, choreography, and instructor cues can be seen and heard clearly from all parts of the stadium.
'These enhancements are important not just for entertainment, but also to ensure inclusivity, so that everyone can fully participate no matter where they are standing,' he said.
Wee also reaffirmed MBKS' commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 3, which focuses on good health and well-being, emphasising that the Zumba Fiesta is more than just a workout session but also serves as a platform for improving physical and mental health while strengthening community ties.
In this regard, he said this year's event will include a lucky draw offering attractive prizes.
'Registration is free and open to the public through the iPeople App,' he said, urging everyone, regardless of fitness level or Zumba experience, to join the celebration.
Wee added that the fiesta will once again be supported by a dedicated group of local fitness studios and instructors, including Exhilarate Fitness Studio, ZIN Chee Hong, Hit-The-Beat Fitness Studio, ZIN Azeliana Binti Zainuddin, Flylab Athletics, Fitlab Fitness Studio, SHAKE, and KSKKS Studio (Kelab Sukan Kecergasan Kota Samarahan).
He expressed appreciation to the event's main sponsor, KTS Group, for its invaluable support and generous sponsorship of RM50,000, which had made it possible to bring the event to life in such a meaningful way.
He also thanked Natural Avenue Sdn Bhd, which had contributed RM10,000, and Gatorade, which will be providing over 10,000 bottles to ensure participants stay hydrated throughout the event.
'We are proud of what we've achieved together over the past decade. The Kuching Zumba Fiesta has grown into more than just an annual gathering as it is now a movement that celebrates health, happiness, and community spirit.
'Let us come together once more under the stars, dancing and celebrating life. Kuching, let us show the nation what we are capable of,' he added.
Also present during the press conference was Kuching South deputy mayor and the organising chairman for Kuching Festival, Datu Zaiedi Suhaili. Kuching Zumba FIesta lead Malaysia Book of Records wee hong seng

Perak gains edge as SUKMA 2026 may reintroduce petanque, Muay Thai, silambam
IPOH: The Selangor government's proposal to include three additional sports, namely petanque, Muay Thai and silambam, in the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) is seen as giving Perak an advantage in securing more medals at the biennial sporting event. State Education, Higher Education, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah said this is because the three sports proposed for re-listing are among those that have contributed a significant medal haul for Perak. 'In addition, we hope this will serve as a major motivation, especially for enthusiasts of these three sports, to continue promoting them so they become popular and are consistently featured in future SUKMA editions. 'Whatever it is, we hope that when the Selangor government's proposal is tabled at the SUKMA Supreme Committee Meeting, it (addition of these sports) will be approved, as it needs to be decided at the meeting,' he told reporters. Earlier, Khairudin had witnessed LSP Pro Skill Academy receiving recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) for the 'Most House Retail Stores In A Computer Training Academy 2025'. Yesterday, Selangor Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee Chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi was reported as saying that the state government had agreed to propose the inclusion of the three sports in the 2026 SUKMA. Mohd Najwan, who is also Chairman of the SUKMA 22 Selangor 2026 Organising Committee, said the proposal will be submitted to the SUKMA Supreme Committee soon as the addition of sports must be finalised by or before Aug 15. However, Mohd Najwan said any decision is subject to the agreement of all state representatives attending the meeting chaired by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. - Bernama

Family fun and friendly competition at Kuching Festival Fishing Competition
Wee (third rght) and others at the launch of the fishing competition. KUCHING (Aug 9): The Kuching Festival Fishing Competition drew 150 participants this year, meeting the target set by organiser Kuching South City Council (MBKS). Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng described the event as more of a family outing than a competition, with participants arriving alongside their loved ones to enjoy a day by the water. People from all walks of life gathered around the man-made lake at Kuching Park, next to the MBKS Complex, for the event, which offered 23 prizes, including RM2,500 in cash for the champion. Wee said the fishing competition, held in conjunction with the annual Kuching Festival, not only promotes social interaction and integration but also helps MBKS manage the overpopulation of fish in the lake. According to him, the fish population increases rapidly because park visitors frequently feed them. 'The fishing competition is meant for everyone to take part in,' he said. 'We have lined up several activities for this year's city day celebration and, apart from this fishing competition, we also have a pickleball competition, cosplay competition, and a K-pop event.' Wee added that MBKS aims to shape the Kuching Festival to match current trends and demands. 'Not only are we keeping some traditions, but we also explore new things. We need to offer programmes that meet the people's needs,' he said. The mayor expressed hope that more people would take part in festival activities, in line with MBKS' mission to preserve a healthy and liveable city. He also extended his appreciation to the public for their cooperation and continued support for the council's initiatives. community fishing competition Kuching Festival Wee Hong Seng

'This is how we look forward, and our programmes have been planned for everyone: the little ones taking their first bow, the energetic youth perfecting their moves, and our silver-haired warriors proving that age is no barrier to strength and spirit,' he said.
