Martial arts shine at Kuching Festival in dazzling display of unity
KUCHING (Aug 9): The Sarawak Hockey Stadium at Jalan Padungan came alive with colour, energy, and the spirit of unity last night as more than 1,500 participants from 13 martial arts associations showcased their skills at the Kuching Festival Martial Arts Display 2025.
Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng described the evening as a celebration of discipline, respect, courage, and harmony during the launch of the event.
'Tonight is the night when the spirit of martial arts comes alive. Now you can actually see, this is Sarawak.
'You see everyone coming together, regardless of their religion or belief, even our kung fu, we can gather here on the same ground and showcase to everybody what makes Sarawak different,' he said in his speech.

Wee stressed that the event was more than a display of physical skills, saying martial arts is about building a strong mind and heart, learning that respect comes before victory, and recognising discipline as the real superpower.
He also highlighted Kuching South City Council's guiding principle of inclusivity.
'Our belief is very simple but it's a very powerful principle – no one in Sarawak is left behind. We want everybody to be involved, whether in martial arts, dance, sport – whatever you name it.
'This is how we look forward, and our programmes have been planned for everyone: the little ones taking their first bow, the energetic youth perfecting their moves, and our silver-haired warriors proving that age is no barrier to strength and spirit,' he said.

He also urged the community not to take Sarawak's harmony and unity for granted.
The Kuching Festival Martial Arts Display brought together practitioners from diverse disciplines, from children taking their first steps in the art to seasoned seniors, with every performance moving in harmony to let the audience feel the energy and unity in each precise, powerful motion.
It was more than just kicks, punches, or forms – the crowd responded with cheers and applause, celebrating the performers in a shared spirit of pride and festivity.

KUCHING (Aug 2): The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has launched its inaugural Mayor Pickleball Championship 2025 to promote community sports and encourage active, healthy lifestyles. Held at Picklepro Kuching yesterday, the event was officiated this morning (Aug 2) by Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng and drew participants from various age groups. 'For those unfamiliar with the sport, pickleball isn't something from the kitchen despite its name. 'It's a fun, fast-growing game that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. Whether you're 15 or 65, pickleball is a sport for everyone,' said Wee in a statement following the opening ceremony. Wee also said the initiative is in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, with MBKS exploring innovative ways to encourage physical activity, mental wellness and community interaction. 'We want our youth off their phones, away from negative influences, and onto the court doing something energetic and fun,' he added. The event is part of MBKS's broader goal of transforming Kuching into a Healthy City, where sports and recreation are accessible to all. With pickleball gaining traction globally, MBKS hopes the championship will spark a new sporting culture in the city, inspiring residents to stay active and socially connected. Wee also extended his appreciation to the organising team, volunteers, the Kuching Pickleball Association, and corporate partners, expressing hope that the championship will become an annual tradition. Wee (centre) poses with event organisers and representatives from participating fitness studios, showcasing lucky draw prizes for the upcoming Kuching Zumba Fiesta 2025. KUCHING (Aug 1): Kuching is poised to enter the Malaysia Book of Records as over 9,600 participants have registered for the upcoming Kuching Zumba Fiesta 2025, said Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng. The event, marking the 10th anniversary of the Kuching Zumba Fiesta, will take place tomorrow (Aug 2) from 7pm to 10.30pm at the State Hockey Stadium. 'This year's event is a special one. We are making an ambitious move to break two Malaysia Book of Records titles,' he told a press conference yesterday. The two records the city is aiming to break are the Largest Participation in a Zumba Event currently held by the Penang Women's Development Corporation with 9,500 participants during the 2023 International Women's Day celebration; and the Largest Participation in a Glow in the Dark Zumba Event set in 2016 by Sunway Lagoon and Watson's Personal Care Stores Sdn Bhd with 5,360 participants. 'As of today, over 9,600 participants have registered, putting us in a strong position to break both records. But registration alone is not enough, and to all who have signed up, we need you to show up and help Kuching make history,' Wee said. Organised in support of Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, the event aims to promote active living through fun and inclusive fitness activities. To enhance the glow-in-the-dark experience, participants will receive yellow glow sticks. A high-powered sound system and large LED screens will be set up to ensure participants can follow the routines from all corners of the stadium. Leading the Zumba routines on stage will be 11 fitness studios and teams, including Shake It Squad, Angels Fitsquad, Flylab Athletics, Fitstarzs Dance Crew, Exhilarate Fitness Studio, ZINs Fabulous, Honey Dance and Fitness Studio, Amber Warriors Fitness Studio, Choco Fitness Studio, Reggae Fitness Studio, and Kelab Sukan Kecergasan Kota Samarahan Studio. 'We truly appreciate their energy and effort in making this event fun, exciting, and memorable for everyone,' said Wee. To add to the excitement, a lucky draw will be held during the event. Prizes include two return flight tickets to Kunming, China sponsored by Ming Ming Travel Sdn Bhd; two Make 27.5 mountain bikes; two Voice Vector 27.5 mountain bikes; and 15 electrical items. Wee also acknowledged the event's sponsors, with KTS Group as the main sponsor contributing RM50,000. Natural Avenue Sdn Bhd is a co-sponsor with a RM10,000 contribution, while Gatorade is the official beverage partner, providing over 10,000 bottles for participants. 'Kuching Zumba Fiesta is more than just a fitness event – it's a celebration of health, happiness, and community spirit. 'Let's come together on Aug 2 at 7pm to dance, glow, and create a moment that will go down in Malaysia's record books,' he added.
