Rafizi bids farewell, praises five officers behind economic reforms
ECONOMY Minister Rafizi Ramli on Friday expressed his appreciation to five policy officers at the ministry who played a key role in supporting his efforts to advance national economic initiatives.
'From chillies to semiconductors, the startup ecosystem, the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, the National Energy Transition Roadmap, progressive wage policy, and the 13th Malaysia Plan – they helped translate many of my ideas into implementable programmes.
'I have learnt a great deal from them – perhaps more than they have from me,' Rafizi said in a Facebook post.
He named the officers as Dr Azraai Bahari Nasruddin, Benjamin Quek, James Chai, Ismat Qayyum, and Haqimi Zamri.
Rafizi said he had returned to the office on Thursday and today to wrap up final matters, including clearing out his workspace.
On May 28, he announced his resignation from the Cabinet, effective June 17, after losing in the 2025 People's Justice Party (PKR) elections.
The Prime Minister's Office later confirmed receipt of his leave application and notice of resignation. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim approved the leave request, while a decision on the resignation has not yet been made. — BERNAMA

Ramanan pledges RM100,000 to boost school facilities in Sungai Buloh
KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — Sungai Buloh Member of Parliament Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, who is also Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, has allocated RM100,000 under the Mesra Rakyat Project (PMR) to upgrade facilities at two secondary schools in his constituency. The allocation involves SMK Sierramas and SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara, each receiving RM50,000 for the construction of covered walkways, new classrooms, canteen repairs and other basic facilities in urgent need of maintenance. Ramanan, who is also PKR vice president, said the initiative aims to provide a safer and more conducive learning environment in line with the growing number of students and current educational needs. 'We want the children of Sungai Buloh to have access to the best education. Their schools must be equipped with safe, student-friendly facilities. This is an investment in the nation's future,' he said when officiating the programme today. During the event, he also announced that over 10 outstanding SPM 2024 students from both schools will receive Special Education Incentives from Yayasan Bank Rakyat next week in recognition of their academic achievements. Ramanan also personally contributed RM6,000 to SPM Excellence Award recipients from SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara. On the improved School Average Grade (GPS) for the 2024 SPM results at both schools, Ramanan said it reflects the combined efforts of teachers, parents and students. 'These efforts show the Sungai Buloh parliamentary constituency's ongoing commitment to strengthening the education ecosystem — not only in terms of infrastructure, but also in recognising the efforts and achievements of students,' he said. — Bernama

Thailand says 'progress made' in Cambodia border dispute talks
BANGKOK:Thailand said Saturday talks with neighbour Cambodia had 'made progress' in resolving a long-running border dispute that last month devolved into clashes. Troops from the two countries exchanged fire on May 28 in an area known as the Emerald Triangle, where the borders of Cambodia, Thailand and Laos meet, with one Cambodian soldier killed. The Thai and Cambodian armies both said they had acted in self-defence, but agreed to reposition their soldiers to avoid confrontations. Thailand has tightened border controls with Cambodia in recent days, while Cambodia ordered troops on Friday to stay on 'full alert'. Officials from the two countries had agreed to resolve the spat at a Saturday meeting in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh. Foreign ministry adviser Prasas Prasasvinitchai was leading the Thai delegation, while Lam Chea, minister of state in charge of the Secretariat of Border Affairs, headed the Cambodian contingent. Thailand's foreign ministry on Saturday said the meeting had 'made progress in building mutual understanding' between the two countries. Thai foreign ministry spokesman Nikorndej Balankura said in a press conference that 'diplomatic dialogue remains the most effective way forward', adding that talks would go into Sunday. The row dates to the drawing of the 800-kilometre (500-mile) frontier, largely done during the French occupation of Indochina. The region has seen sporadic violence since 2008, resulting in at least 28 deaths. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced earlier this month that Cambodia would file a complaint with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over four disputed border areas, including the site of the latest clash. Hun Manet said in a Facebook post Friday that the four areas and the border restrictions would not be discussed at Saturday's talks. 'Cambodia awaits Thailand to clarify its official position at (Saturday's) meeting on whether Thailand will join Cambodia in referring the four areas to the ICJ,' he said. The ICJ ruled in 2013 that a disputed area next to Preah Vihear temple belonged to Cambodia, but Thailand says it does not accept the ICJ's jurisdiction.
