Marseille Rope In Brazilian Forward From Feyenoord On Club Record Deal
French side Marseille completed the move to rope in Brazilian forward Igor Paixao from Dutch club Feyenoord on Friday as the Ligue 1 side added firepower to their ranks.
Reports claim that the 25-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal valued at around the 35 million euros mark, a record fee for the French side.
Paixo, who began his youth career at Cortiba before making his senior debut for the club in the year 2019, went on to play for the Brazilian side up until the 2022 season, including a loan spell at Londrina in the 2020/21 campaign. The striker joined Feyenoord in 2022, and led the Dutch side to the league title the following season.
In the recently concluded season of the Eredivisie, he found the back of the net 18 times and set up his teammates with 19 assists. He was befittingly named player of the year for his contributions towards his side's success. The Brazilian also got the telling touch for the De StadionClub in their Dutch Cup triumph over Nijmegen.
The forward was also rewarded for his showings at club level with a national team call-up as he donned the famous canary yellow drip of the South American nation in 2023 with the Olympic team.
Feyenoord finished the recently concluded 2024/25 season of the Dutch top-flight third, behind winners PSV and second-placed Ajax, with 68 points to their name from 34 outings, which sealed their berth in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers.
PSV clinched the title following a shocking run of results for Amsterdam-based Ajax, who capitulated the season towards the end of the campaign with a string of subpar showings.

Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko upsets top-seeded Coco Gauff to reach Montreal quarterfinals
MONTREAL: Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko upset top-seeded Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday night to reach the National Bank Open quarterfinals. "Your support was incredible," Mboko told the crowd in French after a chorus of "Olé, Olé, Olé!" chants echoed around the venue. "I'm really happy to win today. .. It's incredible. I'm so happy to beat such a great champion." Gauff dropped to 2-3 since winning the French Open. She followed the major victory with opening losses in Berlin and Wimbledon, then overcame double-fault problems to win two three-set matches in Montreal. Gauff had five double-faults Saturday after having 23 in her opener against Danielle Collins and 14 against Veronika Kudermetova. "She's playing high-level tennis." Gauff said. "I think that's what showed today. I think she was the better player." The 18-year-old Mboko, ranked 85th in the world, finished off the 21-year-old Gauff — who had 24 unforced errors — in 1 hour, 2 minutes. "When I was up 5-4, the crowd started cheering even louder, and everything got super noisy," Mboko said. "I used that as more fuel for myself and to pump myself up a little bit more. I just used the crowd to my advantage as much as I could." Mboko will face Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain, a 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 winner over Lin Zhu of China in a rain-interrupted match that ended just before midnight. In Rome in May, Gauff rallied to beat Mboko 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. "I was actually really thinking about it a lot during the match," Mboko said. "I had flashbacks to when I played her in Rome a little bit. I just remember when she came out playing even better and stepped it up a bit better. Wanted to step my game up a little bit more and make sure I matched whatever she was producing, and I wanted to stay right there with her." Earlier, 24th-seeded Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine and ninth-seeded Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan set up a quarterfinal match. Kostyuk beat McCartney Kessler of the United States 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, and Rybakina topped Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.

India's Campaign At Swimming Worlds Comes To Halt As Shoan Ganguly Fails To Advance
India's swimming contingent had to endure a forgettable campaign at the Swimming World Championships in Singapore as the tricolour's challenge came to a halt as Shoan Ganguly could only finish 28th place finish in the men's 400m individual medley on Sunday. The 20-year-old Ganguly produced an effort of 4:30.40s as he failed to make the eight-man final. Ganguly entered the meet on the back of a record-breaking swimming nationals, as he set a 'Best Indian Time' of 4:24.64s en route to the gold medal at the nationals in June. The Indian unit came up with an underwhelming showing at the world meet as none of the nation's participants made it past their heats or even improving their personal best timings. Four-time Olympic champion Leon Marchand performed just enough to secure his place in the final. The French star, who set a new world record earlier in the week en route to winning the 200m individual medley title, recorded a time of 4:13.19 to take the seventh spot. Earlier this week in Singapore, Marchand broke the world record and claimed gold in the 200m individual medley. However, he was seventh fastest in the 400m medley heats, clocking in at 4min 13.19sec. Marchand, who shattered Michael Phelps's 400m individual medley world record at the world championships in Japan two years ago, admitted that his performance 'worries" him ahead of Sunday night's final. 'I would have preferred to set the best time this morning, but it didn't go as planned. I was struggling a bit," said the 23-year-old. 'Strange, because I slept well and felt fine this morning, but that's swimming — sometimes you dive in and you don't feel good." Japan's Tomoyuki Matsushita set the fastest time in 4:10.39, nearly three seconds quicker than Marchand. In Singapore, Marchand is swimming a lighter programme than usual, focusing only on individual medley and relay events. His Sunday morning heat was just his fifth swim of the championships. 'It worries me, but I have a lane tonight, so in the end it's OK," said the Frenchman. Summer McIntosh recorded the fastest time in the women's 400m individual medley heats, following her epic battle with American great Katie Ledecky in the 800m freestyle final. McIntosh's bid to join Phelps as the only swimmers to win five individual golds at a single world championships ended after she finished third behind Ledecky and Australia's Lani Pallister. 'I got all of my thoughts and emotions out last night," McIntosh said before coming through the 400m individual medley heats in 4:35.56. 'I'm really just focusing on the 400 IM, putting down a good time, and touching the wall first." The 18-year-old Canadian has already won three golds in Singapore. 'There's more reflection I can do from what happened last night in the 800, but I think that's reflection that will be happening at the start of next season." Chinese 12-year-old Yu Zidi also qualified for the final with the third-fastest time of 4:36.49, less than a second behind McIntosh. Yu won her heat and will be appearing in her third individual final in Singapore. She finished fourth in both the 200m individual medley and 200m butterfly events and picked up a bronze medal as a member of China's 4x200m women's freestyle relay team. Yu became the youngest swimmer in history to win a world championships medal.
