Nebraska Football: 2025 Cornhuskers Season Preview and Prediction
Nebraska took an important step last season, ending a seven-year bowl drought. Year 3 was an important benchmark in Rhule's stops at Temple and Baylor, going 10-4 and 11-3, respectively. With veterans at key spots and important additions from the transfer portal, Nebraska should improve on its progress made in 2024.

Nebraska 2025 Season Preview and Prediction
Previewing Nebraska's Offense for 2025
Dylan Raiola returns for a highly anticipated sophomore campaign after completing 67% of his passes with 13 touchdowns to 11 interceptions. Raiola showed flashes of his elite arm talent in 2024 and dropped weight this offseason to be more of a threat with his feet.

Offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen will guide Raiola and the Cornhuskers attack full-time in 2025. Holgorsen's relationship with the Air Raid is a thing of the past, but unlocking big plays for the Husker offense will be near the top of the to-do list.
Nebraska will feature running back Emmett Johnson as both a runner and receiver. Johnson was a favorite of Holgorsen's in November, when the back averaged more than five yards per carry and caught 23 passes in four games with Holgorsen calling plays. At wide receiver, Nebraska added Dane Key from Kentucky and Cal's Nyziah Hunter from the transfer portal. Jacory Barney Jr. caught 55 passes last season.
Up front, Nebraska supplemented a deep group with Notre Dame guard Rocco Spindler and Alabama tackle Elijah Pritchett out of the transfer portal. Head coach Matt Rhule called the offensive line one of the 'highlights' of spring practices.

Previewing Nebraska's Defense for 2025
New coordinator John Butler will force the issue with pressure and has been tasked with improving third-down and red-zone defense for a group that was a top-20 unit overall in 2023 and 2024.

Nebraska will miss Ty Robinson's 7.0 sacks and 12.5 tackles for a loss, but the Husker defense got a boost with the return of safety DeShon Singleton, who finished second on the team with 71 tackles, and Javin Wright, an athletic linebacker returning for a seventh season. Adding to the experience are transfer linebackers Marques Watson-Trent, the reigning Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year for Georgia Southern, and versatile Dasan McCullough from Oklahoma.

Previewing Nebraska's Specialists for 2025
Nebraska's shaky special teams units are in the hands of former Tennessee special teams coordinator Mike Ekeler. Ekeler must improve a group that allowed 10 blocked kicks last season. Kicker John Hohl, 10-of-15 on field goals, returns. Improving the Husker punt return game (4.9 yards per return last season) will be a priority.

Former Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah signs with 49ers ahead of the 2025 preseason
A former Husker continues his journey through the NFL, joining his fifth team on Thursday. CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz announced that running back Ameer Abdulah is signing with the San Francisco 49ers. Abdullah joins the 49ers after working out with the team this week and spending the 2024 season with the Las Vegas Raiders. Last season, he rushed for 311 yards and two touchdowns while also hauling in 40 catches for 261 yards and three touchdowns. Abdullah played three seasons with the team, totaling 420 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and 84 catches for 603 yards and four touchdowns. A second-round pick by the Detroit Lions in the 2015 NFL Draft, Abdullah played in 141 career games, earning 26 starts with Detroit, the Minnesota Vikings, the Carolina Panthers, and the Raiders. He's tallied 1,994 yards and eight touchdowns in his career. Abdullah now joins the 49ers team roster in a versatile offense after working out with the team on Wednesday. He is now one of five running backs for the 49ers, which include Christian McCaffrey, Isaac Guerendo, Patrick Taylor, and fifth-round rookie Jordan James. At Nebraska, Abdullah rushed for 4,588 yards in his career, trailing only Mike Rozier's school record of 4,780. He did become the first Husker in school history to produce three straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons. He is also one of just 11 players in FBS history to surpass 7,000 career all-purpose yards. The 49ers begin the 2025 NFL Preseason next Saturday night against the Denver Broncos. Nebraska offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen meets with the media
Nebraska offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen met with the media following the team's practice on Thursday afternoon. The biggest story of the day was the loss of tight end Mac Markway for the second season in a row with an ACL injury. Markway's injury now leaves the Huskers with Luke Lindenmeyer, Heinrich Haarberg, and Carter Nelson as the three leaders in the tight end room. Head Coach Matt Rhule met with the media first and explained that Markway's injury status is heartbreaking news for the team. Markway came to Lincoln from LSU before 2024, where he caught three passes for 16 yards and a touchdown. He was a four-star prospect as a recruit and the ninth overall player in the 2024 class from the state of Missouri, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Then, offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen met with the assembled press. This will be his first training camp with the team after joining Nebraska during the season last year. Holgorsen told the media that the offense installation is already underway. 'The easy answer is everything, obviously, but it's installation,' he said. 'My day one meeting with the guys was like, we've done a lot of football up to this point this year with our winter OTAs and summer and spring football OTAs and now going into camp. This is like the fourth time we've really installed it. Some guys were here in the spring, some guys didn't get here until the summer. Individually, it might be their second time or it may be their fourth time. We should really have a pretty good understanding of what to do, but it's still installation. It's still installation. There's a lot of technique stuff." The offensive coordinator detailed his frustration at simple mistakes even on day one. "I get irritated when guys don't know how to line up or they don't know their assignment. That really irritates me because we have installed it four times. At this point, it should be more about proper technique and making good decisions and starting to work on situations and then putting guys in the position to be able to make plays. It varies from player to player. The overall aspect of it is just trying to figure out what the best lineup is and what we do best.' Holgorsen talks about the offense's goals for the 2025 season. 'One of our goals as an offense is to become a little bit more explosive,' he said. 'Explosive bodies, I think that'll naturally happen. But that's not what we're going to obsess over. We're not going to be reckless with our play calls just to try to get explosive plays. That will come. Situationally, that will come." He also discussed the importance of including routine plays on your call sheet. "Where that really shows up and where your yards per play go up is just routine play after routine play after routine play. If it's a checkdown for five yards, that's better than an incompletion. That's better than a sack. We're just focused on routine plays, taking what the defense gives you. If you do that consistently, those routine plays turn into big plays with good players. I think we have good players that can turn routine plays into big plays, and that will help your yards per play and that will help your explosive plays as well.' He expressed his excitement at the progress made during the offseason. 'I don't care what I've done, where I've been, teams I've had,' he said. 'It's always been about this and what we have to do to make this the best team that we possibly can. I just look at it right now and I'm happy with the depth. We have 17 healthy bodies at o-line. We get a third group out there and rep those guys." Holgorsen detailed the current depth of the offense. "It doesn't look very good, but they're getting a bunch of reps. That's what young offensive line guys need is just reps and development. They need to eat and get in the weight room. We'll worry about those guys here in a couple years. For the now and for the next practice, we've got 10 good bodies that are all practicing hard and that gives us an opportunity to coach them and gives them an opportunity to develop.' Nebraska will open the 2025 college football season on Thursday, August 28, when the Huskers face the Cincinnati Bearcats at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.
