Karnataka labour minister Santosh Lad said he will look into labour law leniency given to Sunrise industries as there are conditions attached
Karnataka labour minister Santosh Lad on Thursday called the 12,000 layoffs at TCS 'alarming" and said his department has summoned the IT company to explain the reason behind it.
Lad said he will look into labour law leniency given to Sunrise industries as there are conditions attached. He said it is alarming that Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) had to resort to large-scale job cuts.
'Yesterday we got information that the TCS has laid off 12,000 employees. Our department has called TCS officials just to have consultation to know the reason," Lad told reporters.

'We have kept the sunrise companies outside the ambit of labour laws and for the past five years we have been giving them exemption year after year but yet there are conditions attached," he said. 'If they want to layoff somebody, they have to give us information. Accordingly, we are talking to them."
TCS had indicated that it is set to lay off about 2 percent, or 12,261 employees, of its global workforce this year, with the majority of those impacted belonging to middle and senior grades.
As of June 30, TCS workforce stood at 6,13,069. It increased its workforce by 5,000 employees in the recently concluded April-June quarter. The move is part of its broader strategy to become a 'future-ready organisation", focusing on investments in technology, AI deployment, market expansion, and workforce realignment, it said.
The Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU) had taken a strong objection over the mass retrenchment and filed a complaint against TCS with the additional labour commissioner G Manjunath.
In a statement, the union said it has demanded legal action against the management for violations of the provisions of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, as well as the conditions imposed by the Karnataka government concerning the reporting of service particulars.
The minister said another reason behind calling TCS and other industries was to convey to them that the state government is not accepting their request for increasing working hours by nine to 10 hours a day. He said if the employees are ready to work then we will consider their request as per the guidelines and give our permission.
'This is subject to the employees' wishes. Those employees who reject the permission will not be forced to do it," he said.
He further said in his opinion, it is difficult to implement increasing working hours because at least four hours are needed to travel to the workplace. While one has to work for eight hours and given the strenuous traffic scenario in Bengaluru one ends up spending at least three to four hours on travelling everyday.
'As minister also when I see this proposal of increasing the working hours, I feel that it is not scientific. Increasing working hours can happen for a week or 10 days but not throughout the year in view of Bengaluru traffic," he said.
He also said there was nothing wrong with the claim by those representing industry that increasing working hours will benefit employees and industry. However, those employees who agree to increase their working hours have to give in writing but we cannot implement it across the board, he added.

US tariffs impact: What will get expensive after Trump's 50% hike and who will pay?

'India is ready for it': PM Narendra Modi after Donald Trump tariff hit, backs farmers' interestThe first tranche of 25 per cent tariffs announced by United States President Donald Trump came into effect on Thursday, August 7. This will double by August 27, when the additional 25 per cent tariffs announced by Trump, as a penalty for purchasing oil from Russia, also come into effect, making the total US tariffs on India a whopping 50 per cent. The additional 25 per cent tariffs on India imposed by US President Donald Trump as punishment for purchasing oil from Russia will come into effect on August 27. (File/AFP) With the imposition of 50 per cent tariffs on Indian exports to the US, sectors such as leather, chemicals, footwear, gems and jewellery, textiles and shrimp are among those which will be severely affected, reported PTI, citing industry experts. Also read: 'India is ready for it': PM Narendra Modi after Donald Trump tariff hit, backs farmers' interest Due to such high tariffs, the Indian goods in the US will become much more expensive, which would lead to a nearly half-slash in US exports, according to the think tank GTRI. 'The tariffs are expected to make Indian goods far costlier in the US, with potential to cut US-bound exports by 40–50 per cent," GTRI said. Which sectors will be severely affected? The newly announced 50 per cent US tariffs are in addition to the existing standard import duty in the US. According to GTRI, some Indian products that will now face high US export duties include: Organic chemicals - 54% total duty Carpets - 52.9% Knitted clothes - 63.9% Woven clothes - 60.3% Textiles, made ups - 59% Diamonds, gold - 52.1% Machinery and mechanical appliances - 51.3% Furniture, bedding, mattresses – 52.3% In the last fiscal year, India and the US had a bilateral trade of $131.8 billion, of which $86.5 billion were in exports and $45.3 billion in imports, the PTI report said. What experts say According to Yogesh Gupta, MD of Kolkata-based seafood exporter Megaa Moda, the new tariffs will significantly increase the prices of India's shrimp in the US market. Also read: 'India must retaliate': Shashi Tharoor says 'hidden message' in US tariffs, cites China's oil purchases "We are already facing huge competition from Ecuador as it has only 15 per cent tariff. Indian shrimp already attracts a 2.49 per cent anti-dumping duty and a 5.77 per cent countervailing duty. After this 25 per cent, the duty will be 33.26 per cent from August 7," PTI quoted him as saying. The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) also expressed concern about the impacts of 50% US tariffs on Indian textiles exporters, as it is one of India's largest markets for exports in this sector. "The US tariff announcement of August 6 is a huge setback for India's textile and apparel exporters as it has further complicated the challenging situation we were already grappling with and will significantly weaken our ability to compete effectively vis-à-vis many other countries for a larger share of the US market," it said. According to Kama Jewelry's MD Colin Shah, the tariffs will come as a big blow directly to about 55% of India's shipments to the US. He said that the 50% tariff puts Indian exporters at a 30–35% disadvantage compared to exporters from other countries who face lower duties. "Many export orders have already been put on hold as buyers reassess sourcing decisions in light of higher landed costs. For a large number of MSME-led sectors, absorbing this sudden cost escalation is simply not viable. Margins are already thin, and this additional blow could force exporters to lose long-standing clients," he said. (With PTI inputs)

Bar body cautions against advertising by lawyers on social media

New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) The Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) has issued a 'notice of caution" against lawyers advertising legal services on social media. 'Many lawyers are indulging in posting contents and videos to solicit work by way of advertisement either directly or indirectly through circulars advertising personal interactions, interviews, producing their photographs to publish in connection with the cases, etc.," read the BCD notice issued on August 4. The council wants lawyers to refrain from unethical canvassing, infringing upon professional ethics and the dignity of legal practice. 'In the age of internet and digital media, there has been a steep rise in the self-styled legal influencers, which has in fact compounded the issue," the notice signed by the council chairman Surya Prakash Khatri said. The BCD also expressed serious concerns about 'the rapid growth of legal influencers" who did not possess appropriate credentials and spread 'misinformation on critical legal issues". The notice said such activities were prohibited under Section 36 of the Bar Council of India rules. The section titled 'Standards of professional conduct and etiquette to be observed by advocates", prohibits lawyers from soliciting work or advertising, directly or indirectly, to ensure that the legal profession remains an honourable service. 'Any violation of the aforesaid rule amounts to serious misconduct and an Advocate can be held guilty to be proceeded against under section 35 (disciplinary proceedings against advocates for professional or other misconduct) of the Advocates Act, which can lead to suspension or cancellation of the licence to practice as an Advocate. 'All such advocates who are active on social media in this regard, as mentioned above, may remove their contents, or otherwise action shall be initiated on individual cases under section 35 of the Advocates Act," the notice added.
